This may not be perfect but it'll give us a good idea where we have depth and where we don't.

Only 28 scholarship players in the junior and senior classes.

Have approximately 70 scholarships filled at this point although I'm sure we'll have some of our own entering the portal.

Cignetti has a lot of work to do!

I know it's not something you can account for without knowing who, but I imagine we will see some transfers going out that will create more needs as well. If nothing else, to provide depth because we will likely see some who will go looking for greener PasTures.

QB: Need at least 1. I'm not sold on Tayven being the guy. I think he lacks "it." I personally think he hits the portal. Cignetti/Shanahan's system runs on a QB distributing and taking care of the football. This is make or break.

RB: I'd take at least 2, probably more if anyone else moves on

WR: They're going to need 3-4. Cooper & Sarratt are money. I think Becker is going to be a good one. But we need some depth for sure.

TE: Need at least 1. They use the TE a lot.

OL: Fiacable has been out all year, but I'm high on his ability, although he's admittedly untested. Evans, Smith, & Lynch are a good core to start with. Definitely need a couple for depth even if Fiacable & Jones end up holding their spots down and/or the freshman develop quickly. A stud center to replace Katic should be a priority.

DL: I'm going to assume that Kamara is gone, especially if he has a good playoff run. He's going to be 1st or 2nd team All B1G and his stock is going to be pretty high. Personally, in the era of NIL, I think kids would be silly to give up a guaranteed college pay check if they're not going to be drafted in the 1st or 2nd round, so who knows. The one thing we've seen abundantly clear this year is that a disruptive front 4 is invaluable. We need at least 1 or 2 out there at all times that can get pressure without having to send the house.

LB: I feel good, overall. Maybe try and get one. Otherwise, I'm comfortable with recruiting & developing here.

DB: I feel very good, overall. Comfortable with recruiting & developing.

Agree about C. Everyone rates LT as the most important OL guy but C usually calls out block schemes and makes adjustments when an audible is called. Hard position for a freshman.

Now that the dust has settled on signing day, and Coach Cig said they will stick to 85 scholarships, revisiting the portal numbers.

A couple of caveats, hard to know how they will handle scholarships for kicker, punter, long snapper. That could take up four spots. Also, will any walkons get a scholarship. The two that played the most were Utzinger and Turvey, but they play the spots IU least needs players.

So IU is probably looking at 13 players from the portal and we know one will be a QB.

With 85 scholarships, you’re looking at 3-deep at each position, plus some. So….

They have 4 RB, maybe add 1.
They have 6 TEs. Don’t see any being added unless multiple leave.
Only 6 WR, so could easily add 3, maybe even 4.
13 OL, but 7 of them are young, so could see 2 to 4 here.

DL is interesting, they have 15, so numbers are probably enough, but several haven’t played. So possibly 1 or 2, maybe more if some of the older guys move on. (Harrison, Monette, Sneed)

LB seems set

DB interesting also. 14 guys, but only 6 with experience. Could see anywhere between 2 and 4 here, particularly at safety.

A lot depends on how many of these young guys they think can contribute right away.

Good synopsis. Fortunately, of the 21 commits, 14 will enter at mid-year so our coaches will have ample time evaluate them & to add on during the spring transport period as needed.

There will certainly be a QB coming to compete with Tayven and add depth.
We will only have 4 RB's with Cuono added, so we'll sign at least 1, and possibly 2 RB's.
No way we don't add a TE, and there are rumors that Bomba won't return, so 2 TE's if he leaves.
With Cooper and Sarratt, we have a great foundation at WR, but we are losing all our slot guys to graduation. Hopefully at least 1 of the freshman, looking at you Bond, can step in and contribute there. I think we bring in at least 2, and possibly 4, WR's.
OL also has a great foundation with 3 returning starters, albeit 1 is coming off an Achilles injury. Kidwell, the guy from JMU that got hurt in preseason, could appeal for an extra year as well. I am hopeful that we have some young guys ready to step up, but i think we get at least 2 OL, and up to 4, depending on who's available.
Losing both starters at DL stings, but we do have some nice young pieces behind them. I'm sure we get at least 1 big, experienced, guy added to this group. At DE we also lose both starters, unless we can pay Kamara enough $$ to keep him from going pro. I am hopeful that he stays since he has 2 years of eligibility left, but he participated in senior day. At least 1 DE, and 2 if Kamara goes pro.
We are pretty stacked at LB even though we are losing Walker, so I don't think we add another LB.
CB is strong as we return both our starter and backup at both spots. We also added quite a few young DB's in this class with a lot of upside, so it will be interesting to see where they end up playing. We lose all of safeties except for Farrell, so I think we will see 1, and possibly 2, added.
Gotta get a Punter since Evans graduates.

Will be interesting to see what attrition we have since only McCulley and Williams have entered the portal so far.

Our kicker commit this year is a walk-on.

I think, outside of probably going in the portal, we might be back to kickers and punters as walk-ons.

Do we have a good punter to replace Evans?
Fun Fact: The Cignetti/Shanahan offense is damned efficient.

2019: 51 punts, 23, FGA (DeBoer)
2020: 39 punts, 11 FGA (8 games). So a 12 game rate of 58.5 punts and 16.5 FGA (Sheridan)
2021: 70 punts, 18 FGA (Sheridan)
2022: 75 punts, 20 FGA (Bell)
2023: 57 punts, 14 FGA (Bell)
2024: 30 punts, 10 FGA (Shanahan)

Our last 2 punters have been from "down under" but were on scholarship. Is Byrce Taylor also a punter? I did not see his name mentioned in the Kohl's punting category.

I thought walk-ons were done? Can we have walk-ons for the remaining 30 spots to get to 105 total?

Cig said that he's going to stay at the 85 number because you go over that and they automatically cut your revenue share down by 2.5 million.

He said a poll showed most teams are going to be doing what he's doing.

How ‘bout a KO guy who can actually boom it to, or even better, through the End Zone? Have no stats to look at, but have to believe IU was near the bottom in the country for number of touchbacks.

Oh, and time to raid JMU and Wake rosters again!!

We will have losses to the portal over money. A lot of guys on that list are worth way more this year than last, and will leave for a better paycheck.

I’m sure our NIL budget has gone up some but I don’t see any way we can pay everybody what they will be worth now as all B1G guys or whatnot. There will be a bidding war for a few of these guys.
