it’s not personal, it’s just business

I was recently sidetracked listening almost exclusively to the British History Podcast (https://www.thebritishhistorypodcast.com/). After listening to over 400 episodes and getting caught up (the series has only reached the middle of the Norman conquest), I returned to some old favorites.

One of those is We Have Ways of Making You Talk - https://wehavewayspod.com/. Their current episode is titled The Life of Patton . It's more in the nature of random snippets about Patton, and it is fascinating. One of the crazy things is how Patton's handwriting was incredibly bad so his wife typed out his handwritten diaries (essentially "translating" what he wrote). Trouble is, she (and others) embellished and changed things - including adding commentary critical of other people that Patton never said. Fascinating stuff.

They say history is written by the winners.

How do you know she fudged ?

The original diaries are at the Library of Congress. Apparently when they were donated there was a stipulation that the originals could not be publicly released for several decades. When they were made available it became clear that the typed "translations" had embellishments. As another example, there apparently was an old story that Patton had predicted the Battle of the Bulge based on a supposed diary entry prior to the battle (maybe a couple weeks before?). However, when his original diary was reviewed it was clear that the diary entry in question not only was from after the Battle of Bulge began, it was a bit different than what was in the supposed "translation" previously available.

On the podcast they also mentioned passages in the translations that were highly critical of specific people (other officers). However, the original diary merely states "Met with X on {date}," with no commentary about the other person.

Another Brit Box police procedural: Above Suspicion.

Stars Kelly Reilly (now of Yellowstone fame), who is totally mesmerizing.

it will be weird to see her in something else. i was watching spy ops on netflix. enjoyed the couple episodes i've seen very much. i don't know much about any of that stuff other than the americans, which i loved. but i am fascinated with afghanistan, pakistan, and that part of the world. central asia. south asia i guess. the first episode is called jawbreaker. was fascinating. like sending The Dream Team into afghanistan

May have posted this before, but I still love it. I saw Rambert back in undergrad in the 1980s and they were incredible back then.

Painkiller series on Nexflix was passable but ends with a whimper. I'd forgotten (or never knew) good ol Rudy Giuliani defended Purdue Pharma. Becuase of course he did.

Broderick was good. Uzo Aduba was fantastic.

To live and die in LA just started on tcm. I was kinda shocked to see it on there. Classic Peterson and Defoe. Great flick, killer soundtrack with Wang chung. Kind of a cult classic.

Holy crap. I forgot how brutal that was. It'll be on tcm west in a bit.

I didn't know William Friedkin the director of the French Connection directed that movie...haha Good Lord it figures. To live and die in LA has jaw dropping moments that still to this day stand on its own. Great Stuff.

Has anyone seen the documentary on Max BS High? About the football team and the coach who faked having a school? They played several games until they got on ESPN to play IMG and got discovered. That coach is evil personified. But it’s interesting.

I had it on in the background a few weeks ago. So strange. At first I thought good for him in that at least the kids might get some exposure. But then he scheduled teams that would pummel them. No academics. He didn’t do the kids any favors

And some of the kids only needed a class or two to graduate and got college offers. They got pulled because of course they didn’t have enough credits.

my daughter and i finished one piece on netflix last night. it was good. a good wholesome show you can watch with kids. and while not great by any means the one episode where they are stranded on an island was outstanding. so so good. like first 20 minutes of UP good, almost. my daughter burst into tears.

we also watched sister wives last night. pretty uneventful episode but my God are they conspiring to get kody. wow wow wow. all we can do is support him from afar.

Read it a couple yearS ago. Really interesting and the movie is supposed to be good. We’ll see

I watched the first two Frasiers. The review I read panned it harshly. Sadly it reminds me of the new Night Court except, you know, funny. I really found Frasier very funny. I don't know if it will last.

I’m going to try. The original Frasier was a great show. His brother was fantastic
Sadly, David Hyde Pierce did not want in. But it really felt like the old Frasier to me. Eventually they want the old Frasier and old Cheers people to appear. But they don't want to force it, they said they really want a story to develop that explains Norm appearing and not just be "Hey, here is Norm"

Okay I’m going to give it a shot

Heartland Film Festival just ended in Indy . I mostly see documentaries, but saw three films that will be released in theaters onetime before Christmas. The finale tonight was Alexander Payne’, The Holdovers. It was funny and warm and sad, and likely will be in the running for some Oscar Nominations, particularly Paul Giamatti and newcomer Dominic Sessa. Kind of. Dead Poet Society vibe, which I loved too.

Other two were Rustin, based on a real person who worked along with MLK and was one of the main planners of the civil rights March on Washington. He was an out gay man at the time, and it’s one of the reasons most people have never heard of him. The Star of it, Colman Domingo was also excellent and getting Oscar talk.
opening night film was Lionheart, and it was also excellent. Produced by HBO Sports, it will probably be on tv. It’s a documentary of race car driver Dan Wheldon.

Sounds like old Brit is gonna let it fly with her new book. Got an abortion bc that creepy Justin Timberlake didn’t want a kid. Going to name drop an A LISTER she was secretly banging. I bet she’s got some stories. I for one root for old Brit. Now I’ve long argued that I think she’d benefit from a conservatorship but I am a fan

Reminder for the Ken Follett fans: The Armour of Light came out maybe last month. I had forgotten about it, because I put a hold on it with the library back during the summer, and it just came through.
