Movies, books, tv

I saw Licorice Pizza yesterday. Meh. I don’t get all the Paul Thomas Anderson love. I’m not a huge fan of meandering stories. Even Boogie Nights I find overrated.

That’s some damn blasphemy on Boogie Nights. It’s on my all timer list. I also loved There Will Blood and The Master. I think the PTA love is quite justified.

I wanted There Will Be Blood to be so much better than it was. The trailer was an all-timer for me in terms of building expectations. I was disappointed.

I know many who have Boogie Nights in their all timer lists. I recently went back and watched it again. Again, meh.
Every PTA movie has a few really well-put together, awesome scenes. PTA crafts great scenes, among the best. But I'm never impressed with his overall storytelling and at the end am always asking "what's the point?"

Haven't seen the Master.

Oh man I absolutely love There Will Be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis is incredible

How about sports schmaltz as a topic? I just watched “42” and rank it equal with “Hoosiers“. Better than “Breaking Away”, ”Rudy” and the “Rocky” franchise movies, imho.
I considered “ Field of Dreams“ but could not stretch my mind around the improbability of the OP to move my heart and soul.

Miracle.

Everything else is in a fight for second place.

The Natural rates high in the schmaltz scale.

I really like The Rookie too.

Dennis Quaid playing Jim Morris in The Rookie is like having Dwayne Johnson play @mcmurtry66 in St. Louis Soccer Tales. 🤣
Hoos Dennis Quaid is my best celebrity story. I was in an elevator in the Omni hotel in Nashville and Quaid got on the elevator smoking!! I was like wtf. And I recognized him immediately; though I didn't say anything. Elevator door shuts and there I am trapped with this guy's smoke.

So when the door opens I get out first and loudly say "F*ucking Cutter!" Behind me I heard an erupting belly laugh from him. I just kept walking....

Should have asked how his older brother was doing.

How about The Greatest Game Ever Played. Big ol schmaltz but also based on a true story. If you can ignore Shia Lebouf's terrible golf swing (bordering on Matt Damon in Legend of Bagger Vance bad)

Anybody remember the Robby Benson movie about the hockey player and the figure skater?

Another good schmaltz move; The Perfect Game. A feel good movie.

It has all the elements: baseball, true, the underdog wins, and poor Mexican kids overcoming prejudice.

Any of you running out of stuff to watch I'm watching the Bill Cosby documentary on Prime/Showtime. I'm about halfway through and it's been fascinating. Really good so far. The old Vegas would have been a hell of a lot of fun.

Season 4 of Ozark has been....disappointing.
I'll reiterate my endorsement of Station Eleven (HBO)

On tap:

Peaky Blinders
The Expanse
Sens8

Agreed re Ozark. Second half is the conclusion. Peaky Blinders is a treat. I'm jealous

I'm working my way through Ozark. Only in season 2. Also only in season 3 of Yellowstone.

I've never seen Peaky Blinders or Sopranos. I doubt I'll ever have the time (maybe when I'm 70?). If I were to pick one, which should I pick.

Oh my God that's hard. I will say I hadn't seen the Sopranos nor Breaking Bad. About four years ago I binged both. I had started Breaking Bad three times and stopped. This time I was determined to watch it. Without question it is the greatest show I've ever watched. Right after I watched Sopranos. It may have dulled it a bit because of timing but I loved the Sopranos. That many years after it originally aired I still loved it. My stoker didn't care for it as much and she loved both Breaking Bad and Peaky Blinders. So I would say pick Peaky Blinders, but definitely do go back and watch Sopranos because it too is great

Loved Breaking Bad. Probably in my top 5 TV shows of all time, alongside Magnum PI, Miami Vice, Love Boat, and Fantasy Island 😀

I will assume you've seen The Wire. If not, start there.
