Has anyone seen Wheel of Time? Is it worth the time?

A review in here. By the way, maybe blogs or podcasts should be added to the title of this thread. This is a pretty good blog.

I found it after listening to Russ Roberts be interviewed by Tyler Cowen here (you can get it on any podcast app, it's the most recent one):

It's a fascinating interview about living in Israel and a lot of other things and they also talk about how great Israeli TV shows are. They list a few as being in their Top 5 or 10 of all time. Anyone seen any? I loved HBO's In Treatment which was the American version of an Israeli show.

Anybody watch Station Eleven on HBO? Now four episodes in and I still don't have an opinion. Story is starting to round out a bit now though. Starts good enough but then hits molasses. Picking back up in the fourth episode.

I do love a good post apocalyptic story. Truth be told I like the bad ones too. I watched George Peppard in Damnation Alley for chrissakes.

What are some good shows/movies in that genre. I wanna make sure i see them all.

The Road; Book of Eli (Denzel!); The Postman is a good book (the movie wasn't so good); Logan's Run. Read the Wool series, you'll like it (although it's kinda longwinded and in need of a good editor).

Welcome to Earth is on Disney+. It's got Will Smith. It's directed by Darren Aronofsky. The cinematography is phenomenal. If you have a 4K or HD TV, watch it. If you have kids, it might inspire them (my 11 yr old son loves it). If you dig the majesty, complexity, and mind-numbing diversity of life in all its earthly manifestations, I think you will like this series:

That scene was great. Alfie is an incredible character in the series.
He's my favorite character. When Arthur tells him he's "Olddddd Testament" and Alfie points at Arthur's eye and goes "****ing Hell Mate, look at that, that scares me...." lol. So great.

Finished Station Eleven. Really enjoyed it. Completely different take on the post apocalyptic genre. Great soundtrack too. Plus some nice bit parts by some good actors.

And you forgot Waterworld. For shame.

So, I have a real low-brow question: The other day, I watched the first Jack Reacher movie with Tom Cruise (I also noticed it's getting ready to come out as a series on Prime). Saw the movie on one of the streaming services, so I said wth.
I didn't realize it was based on one book from a 26 book series by Lee Child. Have any of you non-intellectual types read any of these? Worth the time? I do know that fans of the book weren't happy with Cruise as Reacher.

I had a co worker who loved them. They are, as I understand it, very formulaic but keep you reading. Possibly in the vein of Clive Cussler?

I do know Reacher is like 6’6” in the books which makes the casting of Cruise a bit….odd

LOL Who are the "non-intellectual types"? I mean, I could certainly name a few, but I think you're referring to a broader group than that. ;)

Yes, it's a stretch for Cruise. :p

Haha, at least in the upcoming series they corrected the casting decision. Also, I did actually enjoy the first Jack Reacher movie. As with most things Tom Cruise, he doesn't really make bad movies.

My cousin called to ask me what I knew about Big Ed Jackson who was the Klan governor of Indiana. His first wife was my grandfather's cousin and he and the rest of the family hated him because Jackson was very cruel to her. In any event I told him there had been a really good made for television series made about D.C. Stephenson and the Klan several years ago and I found it on Amazon Prime. It's a little slow at times but is very accurate so those of you who have interest in the rise and fall of the Klan in Indiana and all the scandal that followed I would recommend it. It's amazing how much history repeats itself.

It's free if you have an Amazon Prime subscription. BTW there is a great trial that takes place in Noblesville in the film. The case caused the state to amend the statute on murder.

Yes, I’m a huge mystery fan and have read all of Lee Child’s books. I think COH has also. I really enjoy them. And Tom Cruise was totally miscast. Reacher is a physically imposing man.

Didn’t want to start a new thread, but how many of you are doing Wordle? My timeline was full of it and I finally gave in. A fun little brain teaser to start the day.

I'm loving it already. So far, I got the word on the second try exactly once, and my friends flipped out.
Me too. I’m glad there is only one a day or I’d obsess. I saw your two, show off! There’s also a sweardle for four letter swear words and Byrdle for music terms. I’m pretty good at wordle, teaching letter combinations for thirty years helps, but I don’t know enough about music terms for the other. I’m good at the swear words too!

Failed for the first time yesterday. So pissed.

Snowstorm reading: Sometimes, it's fun to go back and reread something you love. I spent today reading Jurassic Park. Been a while, and I remembered loving the book, but forgot just how much I loved it. Next up, I have Neal Stephenson's new book sitting next to me. Going to give that a try.

@BradStevens I've been trying to work through Dawn of Everything. The premise is fascinating, but the execution is somewhat unconvincing and just plain ponderous. Not sure I'll make it to the end.

Mr. Jones. A must see move. 5 Stars. On Prime for a small extra charge. True story of Gareth Jones, the journalist who exposed the Stalin Ukrainian famine. Gripping. The story takes a big piece out of The New York Times for its role in trying to cover it up to make Stalin look good. More trivia, according to the movie Jones met George Orwell and Orwell’s Soviet satire Animal Farm was inspired by Jones’ work. The Soviets Shot Jones when he was in Mongolia a few years later.
