There was also a second episode a year later. For some reason it shows up here as being blocked, but I think this link should actually work:

LOL great book too! He's fantastic. Let me know what you think of the HBO version as I haven't seen it.I'll allow it.
BTW, I finished Empire Falls yesterday. Very entertaining story. Even the unlikeable characters tend to deserve some sympathy.
I am going to watch the HBO version, mainly because I want to see the interactions between Miles (Ed Harris) and Max (Paul Newman - his last role). I also look forward to seeing Dennis Farina (a favorite) as Walt.
It got pretty good reviews.
I'm also getting ready to order Nobody's Fool for the Kindle.
Thanks again for introducing this author. That act alone has afforded you much leeway.![]()
So has anyone watched the latest Dave Chappelle special that people are making such a fuss about? I'm going to have to now.
I watched it. Dave's always entertaining but this wasn't as good as his past shows
If you've never read his short stories, check them out. Welcome to the Monkey House is the title of collection I read.Looking forward to this coming out...
I recall stumbling on "Breakfast of Champions" as a freshman in the high school library of my small town, and I remember wondering how this book had escaped burning. I think it was the cartoonish cover. Anyway, reading it was like a small act of subversion against the rural sensibilities that controlled much of the culture. What a great book, and I've been a fan ever since.
Of course. If you've never read his short stories, check them out. Welcome to the Monkey House is the title of collection I read.
HBO was on Amazon Prime with first run episodes of its shows? You sure about that? When did that happen?I turned on Prime to watch the new Curb Your Enthusiasm. Bam!! HBO is no longer on Prime. History Channel removed from Fubo. EPL airing games on Peacock Premium. Exhausting trying to keep up.

The new episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm is pretty good.
I just looked it up. HBO subscriptions through Prime ended on Sept 15. Ugh.HBO was on Amazon Prime with first run episodes of its shows? You sure about that? When did that happen?

Ahhh, so you paid extra for HBO access via Prime. That I understand.I just looked it up. HBO subscriptions through Prime ended on Sept 15. Ugh.

From his basement, no less. He's ****ing with everything!

SEMI-SPOILERS!!!LOL great book too! He's fantastic. Let me know what you think of the HBO version as I haven't seen it.
Ah that sucks, but thank you. I'm not going to watch it then. I will also add that I love Empire Falls but I don't think it's as good as Risk Pool, Straight Man, Nobody's Fool. Sometimes I think these great authors win a Pulitzer for body of work more so than the actual book that gives rise to the award. The Road by Cormac Mccarthy jumps out as another example where to me the book that won wasn't as good as previous books but probably won in recognition of his body of work.SEMI-SPOILERS!!!
The HBO 2 part miniseries of "Empire Falls" was adequate, barely. I wonder what I would think of it if I had watched it before reading the book. All the characters seemed to be reading their lines from the novel (Russo did the screenplay, too). All the changes seemed to subtract character development and motivation, in an effort to shorten the time. The effect was to render some of them more 2 dimensional than the book.
Ed Harris - B- (took the blandness of Miles too far)
Paul Newman - A- (it's Paul f'king Newman)
Dennis Farina - D (just couldn't get past the badass Farina playing a doofus like Walt)
Helen Hunt C- (Graded on a curve for her unabashed nipple through shirt scene)
Danielle Panabaker - A (perfectly cast)
Phillip S. Hoffman - B (did well with limited screen time)
Robin Wright Penn - C (not nice enough)
Joanne Woodward - C (too nice)
Lou Taylor Pucci - C- (this character was supposed to be the product of years of horrible mental, physical, and psychological abuse and poverty...he came across as a kid who was pissed he didn't have a date for Homecoming)
Kate Burton - A (well done)
William Fichtner - A+ (the true star of the show)
Trevor Morgan - C- (needs to take notes from Johnny Lawrence and Steff McKee)
Estelle Parsons - A (well cast)
Theresa Russell C- (Timmy the Cat had more sex appeal)
I think we share a brain. Newman is so great (check out the Color of Money episode on the Rewatchables pod).Ah that sucks, but thank you. I'm not going to watch it then. I agree completely with you about the acting and line reading. I was shocked at how wooden a lot of it was, especially with such an amazing cast.SEMI-SPOILERS!!!

For sure re The Road. I absolutely loved it, but The Crossing, Suttree, Blood Meridian, and All The Pretty Horses I liked better. And I do know what you're saying about readability. Some of his older stuff I'd read wondering "what the F does that word mean" every other paragraph.I think we share a brain. Newman is so great (check out the Color of Money episode on the Rewatchables pod).
I will say, though, that I loved The Road and found it the most readable (still depressing) of his books. As a literary work, though, it probably doesn't crack his top 3.
I think I read once he makes up words sometimes for the sound of them. I just tried googling it and discovered that some people might like McCarthy too much:For sure re The Road. FBI should bookmark that. Not sayin. Just Sayin.I think I read once he makes up words sometimes for the sound of them. I just tried googling it and discovered that some people might like McCarthy too much:
You have some incredible books in the batter's box. The border trilogy is as good as it gets. I think the crossing is his best book.Read All the Pretty Horses, the Road. Blood Meridian is on the shelf waiting. All the Pretty Horses is part of the Border Trilogy so technically The Crossing and Cities of the Plain are both sitting on the shelf as well.
Damn shelf staring at me while I'm trying to watch 500 different TV shows.

Forgot NCFOM. I did force myself to read it before watching the movie.Add Suttree and No Country for Old Men to that list.
HAHAHAHAHA good stuff. This actually makes me feel better. I often wondered why I didn't know so many wordsI think I read once he makes up words sometimes for the sound of them. I just tried googling it and discovered that some people might like McCarthy too much:

The Amazon reviews of this book are great. Thanks for the recommendation; I'm going to pick up a copy right now.I’d also highly recommend anything by Daniel Woodrell. He’s most famous for Winters Bone, but he has several great books.

And Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the cop. Strange to think of for some reason. Can't you find us another Paul Newman out there?Nobody's Fool is one of my favorite movies of all time. Robert Benton is a total G, Newman is the height of subtlety, and Pruit Taylor Vince is absolutely heartbreaking. You're such a renaissance man, mcm!
