Anybody watching Endeavor? Clever mysteries. Neat classical music and opera soundtrack. I consider this a pandemic item, probably wouldn’t watch otherwise. Inspector Thursday is a main character. I wonder if he knows Sgt. Joe Friday.

Tread - something was seriously wrong with that guy. I know they F'd with him but he was mental.
Immigration Nation - too sad turned it off
The Confession Killer - speechless. i'm sure for a spell he made a shit ton of cops around the country happy. "close it Joe! blame henry."

I watched Tread last week and it was both wild and sad. That guy was a little bit off and, as his friend said, he spent too much time alone and inside his head. But, I can see a small mountain town like that ganging up on an outsider so I feel like there was some truth to his story.

LOL Yeah, it kind of hits you all at once. The end of the first car chase was a bit confusing (love that silver Bentley), but then all hell breaks loose out in the forest.

But didn't the title give you a hint at all? I mean, Lovecraft wasn't exactly known for his mainstream, social commentary dramas. Ironically, he was also pretty racist. I missed the very beginning of the show, but supposedly there is some sort of acknowledgement of his racist views.
The opening scene.

Is Tic fighting in trench warfare in black & white. Very violent stuff. Then they add color in the form of UFOs and a red-skinned alien hottie, and then a Lovecraftian horror, who is killed by Jackie Robinson with a baseball bat. Then Tic wakes up on the bus taking him to Chicago. Like I said, it was clear it was a dream sequence from the start. So I guess I was figuring there was a chance that the horror elements would be downplayed in the real life scenes. And for the first 40 minutes, the show really wasn't Lovecraft at all. It was more Peele. No doubt there was a Get Out vibe hovering over the whole time.

The Bentley crash was the first fantastical element, no doubt. That was not a normal car crash. But then things got back to mostly normal, so that scene was a little tease, but when all hell finally broke loose, it was like going from 10 MPH to 85 in the blink of an eye.

Yep.

Anybody wanna talk about the Yellowstone season 3 finale and where season 4 is going? Don’t want to give too much away, here, but I think Rip will be a man on a mission.

FWIW, I think this is one if Kevin Costner’s better roles.

My favorite Costner movie is Fandango. An immensely underrated movie.

Question. Do you think it was Jamie, or the hedge fund guy that did the damage at the end?

My stoker and I discussed that same question. I’m going with Roarke. She likes Jamie for it with his dad’s help.

And then there is Rainwater with the influence of his attorney. I think that is the least likely, although I suppose it could be some combination thereof. I agree with you, Rip may be on a rampage next year.

The only thing my stoker said about Rainwater’s attorney is too much Botox in her lips. She calls her Miss Botox.

This week, I read Andy Weir's follow-up, Artemis. It was a decent story, but it didn't have the magic of The Martian. The casual language that made Mark Watney an everyman hero in this case turned main character Jazz into an internet forum caricature. It felt like something I might have read serially on the AOTF.

But it was well-written, to be sure. So it was still enjoyable. The climax was especially riveting. But it just didn't have the depth of his first novel. To be honest, it seems like the problem is that he just doesn't have the chops to write women. It's often difficult for writers to step out of what they know and write from an entirely different point of view, and I think that's the case here. There wasn't anything wrong with her, per se; she just lacked a third dimension. She was less a female protagonist and more what a male author imagines a female protagonist to be.

Melvin Udall didn’t have that problem:

Jackie: How do you write women so well?
Melvin Udall: I think of a man. And I take away reason and accountability
one of my favorite movie lines!

Has anyone seen Ted Lasso? It is about an American college football coach who is hired to coach a Premier League team even though he knows nothing about that type of football,. I am 4 episodes in and it is surprisingly good.

Anyone watching Lovecraft? Know it was mentioned earlier.
Yep. Great show. It’s definitely a bit different, and now has a Tales From the Crypt vibe to it. But I love the seamless combination of horror and period societal portrayal. It is the most unique show in a long time.

Really? The clip above like that is stupid but it’s not as bad as it seems?

I would say it is something like Forrest Gump. Or if you watched Rockford Files, Tom Sellek had a character named Lance White who was a lot like Lasso. I think I like it because it runs so counter to the dark modern storytelling. More like Adam West Batman. So it has its camp at times but the idea that this coach is so positive that he makes everyone a better person talks to me.

Was listening to a podcast that was talking about how every single episode is so different and unique. Lots of talented actors too.

I’ve heard good things about it but man I do not want another service!! It’s only on Apple, right?

The Social Dilemma (Netflix): well made. I personally agree with pretty much everything they said.
Talking to Strangers, Gladwell: good book

alking to Strangers, Gladwell: good book

I thought the book was very informative, but the section on suicide was really an eye-opener. For those that haven't read it, the idea that if people cannot commit suicide by one method will just do it by another is wrong.

I agree, (siderail: the history of the bridge and the suicide net was interesting. they put up a net for the workers only to take it down?). I would love for someone to write a book about Thresholds and how it changes behavior. Everything from ease of suicide to the "broken windows" effect. I think "Thinking Fast and Slow" talked about it, but it really is fascinating to think about.

I watched the Trial of the Chicago 7 on Netflix last night and I thought it was pretty good. It will make most conservatives a little angry but yet it gave you a pretty good understanding of the events surrounding that major abomination of a trial. It has a pretty stellar cast: Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella, and Michael Keaton.

The Pete Souza documentary The Way I See it. Saw it on MSNBC last night. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be offered on any streaming platforms as yet. Keep your eyes peeled, though, it's really worthwhile.

I watched it tonight, it definitely feels like a Sorkin production. It is largely historic, they make up a couple things for dramatic effect but the overall narrative was good.

I just could not help but have the eerie feeling it was not 1968 but 2020.

Watched it yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyable movie, even with the artistic license taken.

Also watched David Byrne's Broadway concert move (a Spike Lee Joint), "American Utopia", on HBO Max. It's amazing to watch Byrne surround himself with outstanding artistic/musical talent and reinterpret his songs. Very entertaining. (Note: They perform a version of "Hell You Talmbout", a protest song by Janelle Mona'e, so members of the Perpetually Uptight Brigade may want to skip it...just saying.)

so ridiculous. hbo MAX. so now the hbo we pay for isn't enough. not to hijack this thread but to provide a bit of a psa in chasing the ever changing broadcasts of champions league, la liga, and the epl i've gotten pretty good at gauging services. i have to say that at this point fubo provides the best product: local channels; history channel; discovery; the weather channel, etc

Well, I got it for free when I upgraded my iphone (after an unfortunate, accidental, and prolonged Gulf water immersion).

And I know...it's not really free.

I have had a grudge against HBO Max because I use Roku and it doesn't work with Roku. But I really wanted to watch Hartsfield's Landing (West Wing) so they got me for a month. I will squeeze in Perry Mason and Avenue 5 and drop it. It is just annoying I have to connect my laptop to the tv.
