Most Layoffs Since 2009

Been interesting reading this thread. Shows the difference in mentality and perspective between government lifers and its perception and that of a young Kelley executive operating at a fortune 25 corporation and all that attends: production, competition, laser focused on the bottom line, cut throat path to the top

Clearly y’all aren’t getting laid enough. Lots of anger on this board. The AOTF needs a revival. @sdhoosier, @kkott, @Coach Pete Bell, @sglowrider and I will provide the pics. We’ll hit the Hip Hugger once a year, throw back some drinks, have some real fights in the parking lot, rinse and repeat. I’d add hookers and blow but I think that would kill have of us off.

Wow, you really put a lot of distance between yourself and bailey777

They say great minds think alike.

But here we also see that dipshits think alike.
In an entire history of posting inane crap this is probably the height of your inanity.

Calling me out for someone else wording a post similar to my original post, but with a distinctly different meaning.

That is some seriously pathetic, pedantic pussy behavior.

It amazes me that some people believe something that is ridiculous on its face. There's just no desire to verify "facts" for many.
You know the job reduction was done without any thought but someone has needed to really look at all the government jobs for many years. Seems like people got a job for the federal government and they had it for life whether they did anything or not.

What it seems like and what it is are not the same thing. I worked with federal civilians for years and even after I retired from the Navy and took a civilian job I worked with DoD agencies on a regular basis in the course of my job and I know that it's just not true. Sure, there are plenty that work there for most of their working lives just like many work for US corporations for most of their working lives. But not all do. There are some subpar workers but in my experience they either shape up or are shipped out. It's not a lot different in the regard that the private sector. We can't believe the notion that federal workforce jobs are unnecessary in general and federal workers in general are subpar. Both of those are false and insulting to the many very good people that work for their country in the federal workforce.

They can and should analyze the federal workforce and determine which jobs are needed and what people may be unneeded. There's a right way to do that and it was done the right way in the late 90s.

The person that orally vacuum removes the stoppers on wine bottles, that fired me from my last gig, quit 2 weeks later.
The shame must have been too much to bare. I leave an impression on people! (not like copy machine people, but an impression)
He's a liberal. DUH

Here’s one I just found.
Jobs report article hidden on CNN.

I’m definitely eating crow here. I really didn’t expect this report. What disgusts me is how CNN hides this article from the front page of their mobile site. I couldn’t confirm the news report JDB linked until I opened the business page. It should equally be front and center. Fox News does the same damn thing and it pisses me off. I’m tired of these major news agencies telling us what is important based on their bias. It’s complete BS.

With that said I haven’t read the details and don’t pretend to be an economist to determine if the numbers are cooked to benefit a POV.

I would hope those with partisan views will call this BS out when they see it.

It's fine. Most don't understand the difference between what these reports are, how they are compiled and what they represent.

The official govt report is considered a lagging report. Challenger and other similar reports (ADP payroll, etc) typically give a more real time estimate.

Here are some looming layoffs I think we can all get behind.

Get those 70 IQ TSA agents back on the Popeye’s sandwich line where they belong.

Was there actually a time we thought these brain dead’s were keeping us “safe from terrorism”?

Am I missing something here?

Ending unionization will lower salaries and make TSA agents find other work. Do we really want fewer TSA agents and much longer airport security lines? Yet Fox says it will make the system better, with no reasons why or how we'd get there.

Read the article. A significant portion of the TSA agents aren’t even performing “security roles”.

And why should they even be performing security roles? A moron patting me down at the airport for my edibles or shampoo without a warrant is a violation of my civil rights in a decent country.

Put one guy on the scanner, look for guns and bombs and keep waving them through.

Shoes and jackets stay on.

Apparently little Marco needs to get on it.

Very interesting. I generally like Rubio but State has seemed to have gone relatively untouched by DOGE/ layoffs.

Given the foreign policy bile of the last four years and eight Obama years, I would think there are a lot of weeds to be pulled.

Maybe Marco is on it but it hasn’t come to fruition yet. Maybe we need to keep applying pressure to him. He can be a bit of a statist.

That used to be true but I doubt it's true any more but I have no data to support that. Until after 20?? here locally Lilly had never laid off anyone but that's sure not true anymore. Younger workers, IMO, are like gypsies in the fact that are constantly changing jobs. Of course, most companies don't offer a pension any more so there is not as much incentive to stay at a company.

You would think with the deficit they are running they would look for ways to save money. A big company would be cutting jobs if they were in as bad shape as the federal government. Of course they want to make money and get pressure from shareholders to get their act together.

The pensions were unloaded from Corporate America onto the Federal government. That burden was removed from them and then their taxes were decreased. The reason this "business" cannot balance their books is because the "business" can't charge their "customers" what it really costs for their favorite "products".

What is happening now is Best Buy selling TVs for $5 and demonizing and laying off their employees for being too lazy and wasteful because the company is losing its ass on those $5 TVs. "You lazy mf'ers should more efficiently sell our more reasonably priced products. We'll go on an advertising campaign to let our customers know how much you suck while at the same time making sure there are less and less of you to interface with the customer." Problem is, the customers know that the $5 TVs are practically being given away, they are THE reason people go to Best Buy and the CEO keeps increasing liabilities to stay afloat hoping the final collapse happens on someone else's watch.

The entitlements are $5 TVs. Eventually someone is going to have to be honest with the public (and frankly corporate America) and let them know that the gravy train has to end. In many cases the people calling government workers "parasites" are the very people interacting with all the social welfare that is the reason for the deficits. The irony being completely lost on them. "Well I paid for my $5 TV, they owe it to me." Yeah, you did, but you didn't pay what it actually cost so now you and everyone else is going to have to shoulder a larger burden to continue to offer those 80" 8k TVs or we are going to have to have a discussion about going a bit cheaper and give you what that $5 should have actually gotten you.

That is the discussion that everyone is terrified to have.

What specific government entitlements do you have in mind? Social, security, Medicare, ?????

Yes.

The things that the Republicans, MAGA, Trump, Musk, etc. are cutting right now are things (by and large with exceptions) that we would probably come to some agreement that government should do. It is nibbling at the edges. Unless the plan is to totally cut everything else that government does, we are either going to have to raise taxes or change the social safety net. There is no other way around it.

Scroll about half way down this to get to a chart with percentages of where the budget is spent:

21% for Social Security, 15% for Medicare, 13% for health, 9% income security, 6% veterans benefits. You are at 64% of the budget right there. Add in 13% more for interest on the debt. That is 77% of the budget. The 2024 budget was $6.75 trillion. 77% of that amount is roughly $5 trillion. The government collected $4.92T in revenue in FY24. So we cut everything but entitlements and interest (including national defense) and we are still in a deficit. Oh yeah, the biggest growth in the budget is expected to be in these categories too.

I agree they’re not balancing the budget unless they cut from the big 3. However, the federal government does need to be cut. Two easy examples are the Department of Education and USPS.

So I will be honest. I do agree with some cuts, I don't know how on board I am with USPS because I buy some of @Marvin the Martian arguments about hard to reach places that are expensive to get to that private industry would likely make postal service pretty expensive to deal with. On the education side, I have a special needs child, I honestly don't know if I trust a guy like Mike Braun to make sure kids like my son aren't tossed in the trash given his stance on autism treatment. There is a NEED for some of this stuff, we just have to figure out what that need actually is and then make sure we are doing our best to make it as cost effective as possible.

I am a Republican. I am not a Libertarian. I think government is a necessity and not everything government does is going to be completely cost efficient, but it helps to provide for a successful society where people can flourish. I am unhappy with what I think is a completely unserious approach on the part of the party to our problems. That the unserious approach is being mixed with online asshole troll behavior makes it that much more distasteful. Maybe we are all in our own little information bubbles but I think the party is in for a rude awakening in 2026 if it continues down this path. And the thing is, I feel that is a bad thing because we do have some serious issues that need addressed and the nature of the current response, IMO, will lead to our viewpoint not having a real seat at the table for quite some time. This is the inverse of the Progressives thinking they had a mandate.

The President of a company isn’t going to cut jobs the way they’re cutting jobs in the government.

That's a good summary.... the Republicans are their own worst enemy. I said as quick as they go elected that they'd screw it up because they "thought" they had a mandate to do as they damn well please. I agree with you that government has it's place for a successful society but it can be like a leech and become in every detail of our lives.

I know that I am very cynical when it comes to the federal government. I honestly believe if you could magically double their revenue today and not hurt the economy that within a year or two because they could not resist spending any excess money and use it to pay down the debt. GWB mentioned putting part of the SS income in the market and you'd think he suggested doing away with it. I know it's not meant to be a savings program but if I, along with my employer, had invested my SS payments in the S&P 500 it I would have over 2 million dollars and even a 2% rate of return today it would be more than I get from SS.

The USPS doesn't get tax money does it... it survives on it on revenue doesn't it. They could easily cut the delivery to every other day in my opinion. I don't care if I get my junk mail a day later. :) I could be gone for 2 weeks and have my mail on hold and when I get back I might have 1 piece of mail that i needed.

I do think some of industry does operate that way. Particularly like tech start ups. Now what I think you may be saying is that layoffs in the private sector tend to have the data up front and then do the cuts while Musk and his children are cut first, find out what happens later. Outside of tech start up land I think that is probably more accurate.

Probably not but at least at Lilly they didn't go thru and get rid of the parasites like they should have. Like I said previously there was no thought put into the current scheme of cutting jobs but I'll still say you could cut 10 to 20% of employees and not miss a beat if it was done correctly.

Exactly. They don’t look around and say, “I don’t know you, how hard you work, or how vital your job is to our bottom line, but I’m firing you.”
