John Shumate died

Yes, it was! Both teams just matching shot for shot.
Bob Heaton hit two huge shots that season. He hit the last second shot to beat Slab Jones’ New Mexico State team and last second shot to beat Sydney Moncrief’s Arkansas team in the tourney. Bird had a tough time playing at New Mexico State because their fans would grab him when he went over the base line and he would have to fight his way back on the court. :)

I called the athletic department at ISU one time and asked a guy there if they had Bird game tape. They had a boatload of tape but never worked out a deal with them.

Heaton's shot beyond midcourt in Las Cruces was amazing. How they were able to win that game with just one starter (I think it was Brad Miley) left after everyone had fouled out is a head scratcher. The Aggies had a terrific shooting guard (Chuck Goslin) come off the bench and hit 8 of 9 shots (or something like that) from 20 feet and beyond. Dude was unconscious! Yeah, when Bird ended up in the stands chasing a lose ball, a fan grabbed him to prevent him from returning to the court and evidently, Bird punched him to get free🤣 Wild game! There were some nasty "snake pits" in the MOVAL for road teams.

I was then and will always remain an IU fan, but living in Terre Haute, I had season tickets for ISU that year. Fun season.
