JALEN HOOD-SCHIFINO

If you want to get a good look at our main recruit, Monteverde will be playing here in Ft. Myers at 2 this afternoon. The game is live on ESPNU and is against IMG Academy. It should be revealing and I hope he is as good as the hype that we are getting here.
I've seen mostly luke warm hype by most on here...what are you thinking will be revealed?

He's a big bodied, physical, playmaking guard, that needs some work on his outside shot. We'll see that this afternoon, I'm sure. Those that do more than just look at box scores, will see what his size and athleticism will bring to IU's lineup...even if he doesn't have huge stats.

What he has going for him, over our most recent 5 star guards, is is overall size, and the fact that he's played for Monteverde. So he's had year round, top level competition, both in practices and the game schedule they play. Both Lander and Bates are fairly skinny, and played for traditional high schools. So 4-5 months of their years were filled practicing against JV kids, and playing against D1 talent maybe every fourth or fifth game...maybe. And we saw how that effected them trying to adjust to the physicality of college basketball. JHS won't struggle as much as they did.

He likely won't come in and take over Xavier's spot/role, as an example. But will provide another very good, solid, physical guard to our back court.

Xavier, Tamar, JHS, Trey, and CJ will be a better backcourt next year than we had this year.

Leal as a junior over freshman CJ all day? every day. Even as a sr/soph. But I agree with you.

Body type is significant. For the last few years, our guys physically seem smaller, skinnier and less toned than their opponents. And that seems to often add up to being more fragile. I wonder about the competence of whomever runs the weight room.

Tamar played at IMG, about as far as you can get from a traditional high school. The school was created and operates as an athletic training center that provides an education because they have to!!!

Sounds like the PG from Rutgers... can't think of his name at the moment. Geno ?

Hype..
I wouldn't say he's had Zeller hype.
But he can play..He's not going to come in and knock 5 three's down a game ..But manage a game ..And get out on the break and finish with contact. ..Or how about push the ball with great passing... And he has a good. If not a great body..He has all those qualities...

Don't forget, Malik Reneau will be playing for Monteverde too. Word is he'll be visiting in a couple of weeks...would be a huge get. I won't be able to watch today, but if anyone can, report back on how these two look.

His game is a lot like Malcolm Brogdon.

He doesn't have elite athleticism, but has a solid build.

He plays the game slowly/methodically/not rushed. He's waiting for the game to come to him. High bball IQ.

Solid mechanics on his shot. Not too much motion. Scores from all 3 levels. Can shoot 3 off catch and off dribble. Fine going to mid-range rather than shooting 3 when having space. Not sure if that is related to comfort or patience in driving. Will be interesting to see how his 3-pt% shakes out in yr1.

Finishes well at the rim, but isn't an elite athlete, so finishes through creativity rather than over & through people. His strength helps here.

His ceiling is probably someone like Devin Booker. Not sure he can shoot it nearly as well as Book right now, but he's got that type of build/game. Floor is probably someone like Ron Harper Jr. Borderline D-League/NBA player. Definitely a pro and will play professionally for 10+ years somewhere.

I don't see him as surefire one and done due to his average/above average athletic ability and he doesn't have a flamethrower yet. Depending on how he works on his shot and how his athleticism improves with S&C, could be here more than one year. Probably not here 3.

Had a friend from Indiana who's kid played hoops at IMG. iubirdman describes it perfectly above. My buddies kid was 6'9" and 220. Played at Purdue Northwest. All about athletics and getting ready for next level, whatever that is.

You need to see some before and after pictures of Race, TG, Rob and Geronimo. Everybody is different in rate of physical maturing. Also talent that has long wingspans usually are slow gainers, although Geronimo is the exception at IU.

What I see is what should have been with Michael Herman, still considered top 5 ever out of Chicago, no one could handle him even as freshman. I hope he is Herman 2.0

If you want to say Top 5 playground player I'd agree, along with Ronnie Fields. But Top 5 overall no way, and I'll miss a ton of guys:

Mark Aguirre, Tim Hardaway, Anthony Davis, Derrick Rose, Isiah, Cazzie Russel, Doc Rivers, Terry Cummings, Quinn, Michael Finley, Nick Anderson, and Hersey Hawkins. I'll stop there.

I know of the playground 'legend'.

Did you see him play at IU?

He played enough to form some opinions---598 minutes.

As a true freshmen, he averaged 11.2 pts/5.9 rebs/6.3 assists/4.6 TOs for every 40M played. While shooting 46% on 2s, 23% on 3s, 66% on FTs.

I remember him as someone with some talent/potential. I never confused him with Isiah Thomas. Did not personally see the "wow" factor.

So far I like what I see. Schiffino is much taller/physical than I thought. A big point guard that dribbles well and can finish. Good outside shot. Although he has a way to go, his game seems a bit like Jason Kidd's. I think we got a good one. Also, Reneau is solid. Would be a good pick up to get him to commit.

I watched some of that. Reneau really flashed for a bit. Great strong body. Good hands. Athletic.
Ditto on JHS. He looked very unselfish. Very good handle. Excellent court vision. Good body.

I agree re. JHS. Very obvious their coach trusts him to run the team.

I thought JHS really resembled Deron Williams, both physically and his game. Was in TOTAL control of his team at all times. With all of the talent on Montverde., JHS played ALL 32 minutes. He is a winner. If any frosh is ready to play in the B1G, it is JHS.

Next years Tamar Bates?

I’ve been to Montverde several times. It is a pretty nice 7-12 private school with full academic, athletic, arts and science curriculums. Definitely NOT a just a basketball factory.

Our players over the years have gotten stronger. It doesn't happen overnight. Getting a player with a build that can finish through contact early in their career allows them to contribute sooner. If you aren't big, you better be quick.
