HOOSIERS IN THE POSTSEASON
Indiana returns to the postseason for the second-straight year and third time in four years as it makes an appearance in the WNIT second round. IU is 10-7 overall in the tournament, which is in its 19th year, and 6-1 overall when playing inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. It also marks the 14th overall postseason appearance for IU who also has five NCAA Tournament berths (1983, 1994, 1995, 2002, 2016) and one NWIT appearance (1991). Prior to the NCAA, IU made an AIAW Final Four appearance in 1973 and two AIAW Elite Eight appearances in 1972 and 1974.

ALL-TIME SENIOR CLASS
With Thursday's win, the four-year senior class of Jenn Anderson, Karlee McBride and Alexis Gassion earned its 78th victory - the most of any four-year class in program history. It's happened just twice in a four-year span, once from 1978-82 which featured no four-year seniors and again from 2005-09 with the class of Whitney Thomas, Kim Roberson and Amber Jackson.

ANOTHER EXCLUSIVE CLUB
Junior forward Amanda Cahill can reach another career milestone on Sunday as she goes for her 800th career rebound. Already surpassing the 1,200-point mark for her career, Cahill be the sixth player in school history to record 1,200 points and 800 rebounds (Denise Jackson, Whitney Thomas, Jill Chapman, Shirley Bryant, Rachelle Bostic). She sits with a career total of 799 rebounds heading into Sunday's game and has 1,284 points.

ADD ANOTHER DUB
Indiana tied history yet again with its 21st win on Thursday night. It's the seventh time in program history IU has secured 21 wins in a single season, with one more victory setting a new single season high. IU's double-digit wins in Big Ten play (10) are also the first back-to-back double figure victories for IU since 2007-08 and 2008-09. IU has also solidified an overall winning season, recording the first back-to-back winning campaigns for the program since 2007-08 and 2008-09.

WINNING AT HOME
IU's win over Ball State pushed its home court record to 13-2 this season, and secured 10 wins or more for the fourth-consecutive season. It also marks the fifth-consecutive season Indiana has posted a winning record at home including all three seasons under third year head coach Teri Moren.

THIS LOOKS FAMILIAR
Indiana assistant coach Glenn Box will see some familiar faces on Sunday when Saint Louis visits Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Box, who was hired at IU last summer, spent two stints with the Billikens from 2014-16 and 2010-12.

BUSS CLIMBS THE BOOKS
Buss became just the second player to ever register in the top 10 of points, steals and assists at Indiana as she hit the top 10 in scoring in the regular season finale against Illinois. She has scored 1,557 career points and has recorded 389 assists (fourth) and 207 steals (sixth) in her career.

500 OR MORE
Tyra Buss made another mark in the IU record books on Feb. 22, becoming the third player in school history to reach 500 points in back-to-back seasons. Only Jori Davis (2009-10, 2010-11) and Denise Jackson (1981-82, 1982-83) have accomplished that feat for Indiana. Through 31 games in 2016-17, Buss has scored 575 points, which is the seventh-best single season performance in school history.

SCORING AS A JUNIOR
Buss - who set the scoring record for most points as a freshman and sophomore - set a new record for points for an IU player through their junior season:
1. Tyra Buss (1,557)
2. Denise Jackson (1,505)
3. Rachelle Bostic (1,389)
4. Jill Chapman (1,346)
5. Cindy Bumgarner (1,311)
6. Karna Abram (1,284)

UP NEXT
The winner of Sunday's game face the winner of Abilene Christian vs. SMU in round three March 22-24.

IU welcomes St. Louis in WNIT showdown
by Josh Eastern

The disappointment was evident for IU women’s basketball after not making the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

After IU lost to Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament, IU Coach Teri Moren was vouching for the Big Ten's strength and for her team to earn a bid. Ultimately, the lobbying failed. The Hoosiers instead ended up in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Now that they are here, IU is keeping an upbeat attitude. They’re still playing games, so their mindset is that they might as well try to win a few. That’s the positive attitude the team has maintained all season.

After a 71-58 win over Ball State to begin the WNIT, IU will welcome in the Saint Louis Billikens to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the second round of the tournament.

“Our main goal is to win the WNIT,” IU junior guard Tyra Buss said after the Ball State win. “We’re just focusing on one game at a time and Ball State was our first step. It’s great momentum going into our next game. We get to play at home again on Sunday, which is nice.”

IU is trying to push the word out about these games to draw fan support, and Moren even offered to buy 100 pizzas for students who show up to Sunday’s contest.

For the five seniors on the team, any game they play from here on out could be their last at the collegiate level. Senior guard Alexis Gassion said she can feel the burden of tournament play starting to take affect. It’s win or go home, at this point.

“I’m out of here if we lose,” Gassion said. “I don’t want that to happen so, try to prolong it as long we can.”

IU now turns their attention to Saint Louis out of the Atlantic 10 conference. The Billikens were just able to squeeze by IUPUI on Thursday night by a score of 62-57. They were led in scoring by senior forward Sadie Stipanovich, who had a double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Stipanovich, at close to 15 points per game, is one of three players who average double-digit scoring for Coach Lisa Stone’s bunch. The Billikens are led in scoring by junior guard and two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Jackie Kemph, who averages close to 15 points per game. Kemph also boasts an impressive 7.5 assists per game. Fellow guard and sophomore Jordyn Frantz is the third leading scorer at just under 12 points per game.

The Billikens will present an interesting challenge for the Hoosiers as they are ranked third nationally in assist to turnover ratio and eighth in assists with close to 19 per game.

The Hoosiers will look to prevent Saint Louis from getting to the WNIT third round for the second straight year. As Moren said postgame Thursday, her team is still fired up to being playing basketball.

“I got competitive kids and I wouldn’t expect nothing more than their very best,” Moren said. “It’s about competing and you got a screw loose if you don’t get excited and fired up to do that. The fact that we’re still playing, and hopefully advancing in this thing, will be a testament to how they are showing up right now and still motivated to play.”

Indiana Powers Past Saint Louis In WNIT Second Round; Sets Single Season Record For Wins

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Using a 25-4 advantage in the second quarter, Indiana Women's Basketball rolled to a 71-53 victory over Saint Louis in the second round of the WNIT on Sunday afternoon inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The win also sets a new single season program records in win for the Hoosiers, who improved to 22-10 overall.

Three players scored in double figures including a game-high 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting and seven boards from junior forward Amanda Cahill. Junior guard Tyra Buss contributed 15 points, five assists and four boards while senior guard Alexis Gassion added 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

IU shot 42.6 percent on the day and 50 percent (7-for-14) from 3-point range with three of those triples from Cahill. They also got 13 points out of their bench – the most since a Feb. 16 win over Michigan - led by four points from sophomore Kym Royster. Freshman forward Bre Wickware also contributed with a season-high six rebounds as IU outrebounded the Billikens, 40-34. Cahill and senior center Jenn Anderson led with seven boards each while Gassion also added five.

Ten different players scored for the Hoosiers in the win, as they advance to the third round and will host the winner of Abilene Christian versus SMU on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Wildcats and the Mustangs will play its second-round matchup on Monday night at 7 p.m.

Trailing by as many as five in the first quarter, Indiana faced a three-point deficit at the end of the opening frame, 18-15. But the Hoosiers made their living in the second quarter, shooting 66.7 percent with help from a 23-2 run while holding the Billikens to just four points in the second ten minutes of play.

Cahill got the quarter started for IU, pushing the ball up in transition to Buss who completed the layup. IU took its first lead with back-to-back threes from Gassion and McBride. The Hoosiers would continue to roll in the second, going on a 21-0 run before the Billikens found the back of the rim with just over a minute left before half. IU would take the 40-22 advantage into the locker room at halftime before Cahill opened up the second half with a three.

SLU would get within 13 points with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter, but never any closer than that as IU led 59-41 after three quarters played. Reserves saw a bulk of the minutes in the fourth quarter as Indiana took its largest lead of the day in the latter half, going up 23 with just over six minutes to play.

QUOTABLE
Head coach Teri Moren
"It was a really good day for us. Again, before I get started, I just wanted to mention the crowd again, how terrific they were, and what a shot in the arm they give us. Especially in that second quarter. I thought we were slow out of the gate. Which is different from the other night when we played Ball State, but I thought the second quarter was really good to us. I thought we got the momentum and had it going into halftime. I am really proud of our defensive effort. I thought that we were really locked in on tendencies of each player, and only hold Jackie Kemph to four points in the second half was big for us. I am really proud and happy for our guys. They showed up today in a big way I thought on the defensive end and rebounding. I am just happy we have the opportunity to advance and move on."

IU uses big second quarter in WNIT win
by Josh Eastern

IU Coach Teri Moren said her Hoosiers were slow out of the gate, unlike in Thursday’s game against Ball State, and that meant they trailed Saint Louis after the first quarter.

A 28 percent field goal mark from the field had IU down just three points, but St. Louis was shooting better than 50 percent and threatening to extend the lead.

After that slow opening frame, the Hoosiers were clicking. The offense started hitting shots, and the defense picked up its intensity. All of that was a part of 21 consecutive points from the Hoosiers in the second quarter. The 21 points were paired with eight-plus minutes of scoreless basketball from the Saint Louis Billikens.

IU used its big second quarter to move on to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament Round of 16 with a 71-53 win against Saint Louis on Sunday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

“Whenever the defense is really well, that carries onto the offensive end,” IU junior guard Tyra Buss said. “Coach really takes pride in the defensive end. We pressured up, had a lot of energy.”

Slowly but surely, the Hoosiers grew their lead. They trailed 18-15 after one quarter and were shooting just 28.6 percent compared to Saint Louis’ 53.3 percent. It was a struggle for IU in the opening quarter, but once the second 10 minutes started, the Hoosiers got things going.

“It was getting a feel,” Moren said on the slow first quarter. “There’s always stuff inside the game that again, the game has to start in order to get that, to understand that. It was just adjusting, and I’m going to go back to this being a veteran group.”

It started with two straight 3-pointers by senior guards Alexis Gassion and Karlee McBride. From there, four other Hoosiers and six total, contributed to the 21-0 run. The offense finally got on track, but the defense is what really propelled the run, according to Buss.

“I know the second quarter, we really picked up our communicating because we were switching one through four,” Buss said. “Picking up our energy of the defensive end led to what we were doing on the offensive end.”

In the first quarter, the Billikens really pushed the pace. Atlantic 10 player of the year and Saint Louis junior guard Jackie Kemph caused the IU defense all sorts of trouble in the transition game. The Billikens outscored the Hoosiers 6-0 in transition points in the first quarter and something had to change.

Moren said her team just had to talk about the transition game in order to fix that. She used the first media timeout in the first quarter to do so. After the first 10 minutes, the Hoosiers didn’t allow the Billikens to get out in transition much at all.

Kemph had a game-high seven points heading into the second quarter and finished with 11 points overall. Moren credited her veteran team for being able to make that adjustment in the transition game.

“They know what they have to do,” Moren said. “Sometimes we don’t execute at a high rate, or as high as we want to, but at the end of the day, they’re pretty smart in terms of adjustments and what has to happen in order to have the success that we want.”

Once the Hoosiers got a feel for things Sunday afternoon, they didn’t have much trouble. Saint Louis was no slouch — the Billikens have won 25 games — but the Hoosiers stifled their attack. The four second-quarter points allowed by IU was the difference, and the Hoosiers didn’t look back after that.

“We work on our transition defense almost every day in practice,” Buss said. “We got out to a slow start there and they got out in front of us, that’s not supposed to happen.”
