IU claims 7 players have max verticals of 40 inches or above

That is all great news...but, Steve Hart could really jump as well. Will it translate to anything? Time will tell.
Big deal. I just bought a 65" smart tv!
No, seriously that is impressive. Got to wait to see what they do with it. I recall Hanner Perera (sp) could jump out of the gym.

Really liking the energy. Now I want to see some skill drills, especially dribbling. Recall being stunned by VO's incredible improvement as a ball handler, hope to see some emulation among the current Roster.

It may not guarantee wins but it is another example showing the players are putting in the work. It also completely destroys the rumors about Phinisee not being a D1 athlete.

Kudos to Taylor. He rarely sees the floor but he puts in the work and represents the team. You never hear a bad word about him. How many walk-ons have a 40 inch vertical?

because he can jump high? that destroys it? I never questioned Phin, but just cause someone can jump doesn't mean much

I'd say so. Anybody with a 42.5 inch vertical qualifies as an athlete. You can believe whatever you want, but the people saying he wasn't a D1 athlete are clueless or intentionally trying to rip on the kid.

Well, yeah, the fact that someone can jump high makes him a good athlete. It doesn't make him a great basketball player yet, but it makes him a good athlete.

That said, I'm not sure who said Phinisee wasn't a good athlete. Morgan on the other hand is going to improve his stock if he can replicate that number at the NBA combine next year.

These numbers have to be exaggerated. Vince Carter had a 43" vertical. You're telling me we have 3, almost 4, players that can jump like Vince Carter?

Whomever ever said PHIN wasn't a D1 athlete is wrong...we can both agree with that. so no need to keep arguing with a ghost about that.

However, jumping high doesn't mean you are automatically a great basketball player.. It means you can jump high..Remember all the talk when Deron increased his vertical??

You need to go back and read my posts carefully. I never said it made him a great basketball player. Not once.

Typically vertical is measured from a stand still and jump straight up. Our guys are getting a running start. Sonthe numbers are inflated a little compared to how vertical is typically tested

I was thinking the same thing.

Have they always measured this with a running start? I seem to recall measuring vertical leap from a standing position.

Fortunately when they are playing they are allowed to be on the move and not required to stand flat footed under the basket. It's similar to their height measurements with and without shoes. They are allowed to wear shoes when they play, so that's actually more accurate in how it applies.

Yes he did but let it rest. He was a young man that made mistakes that might have cost him his future and he is the only one that will have to suffer from it not you.
You can lecture someone else....maybe him for starters.

Phinisee has often been reported as undervalued by the ranking groups. I think he is a true pg who doesn't look for his shot. I think that tendency keeps him hidden in AAU and all star games. He will be a good player for IU.

Rob Phinisee can score too. He is very underrated and it will show. His senior season showed he can score, pass and defend. He has always stated he does whatever is needed for his team. His team last year needed a scorer and that’s what he did but he’s a pass first point.

True.

Here is a link to that. Both standing and max results listed.

Not sure if our players will play better, but if they don't it shouldn't be because they lack explosiveness.
There's two good signs on that list. The thing on Phin was he may lack the athleticism to play this year. He's apparently more athletic than many thought. Two, that Durham is on that list, his weakness last year was his lower body strength, he got knocked off every cut and drive quite easily. Well, that may not be as much of an issue this year. Sure the issue was strength and balance not vertical but having a good vertical shows his lower body is improving.

All great points.

When you build something you have to start with a solid foundation. We might not see a finished product with some of these guys this year, but there are encouraging signs they are developing a base upon which to grow.

Smith: 48"
Green: 44.5"
Langford: 43"
Phinisee: 42.5"
Durham: 40.5"
Morgan: 40"
Taylor: 40"
they must be using these

After last season, I hope they're working on shooting as much as their vertical leap!

Well in the video I saw, it didn't look like a
standing vertical. It appeared they got a bit of a start with momentum before jumping off two feet. Maybe I didn't pay attention but that's not how I remember the vertical test when I took it.
Either way, impressive numbers

We really don’t have a base to compare these numbers to. You can’t compare it to the NBA combine or any other testing place because their method is different. 40 in could be great or could be mediocre. We just don’t have enough info that I know of.

Yes, you do.
