Is MAGA a Cult?

Serious question. MAGA morphed from a campaign slogan to a political movement. But unlike movements such as the Tea Party, the movement is closely tied to a single leader.

This is not Ronald Reagan and trick down economics. The depth and breath of MAGA has spread to become a following with tremendous loyalty, often fanatical.

The definition of a cult from one dictionary:
an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers

Like the woke cult. Opposite sides of the coin. One you like. One you don’t.

1. Woke is a term created by African Americans to address the injustices toward that community, and now it has broadened to encompage injustices for other communities/causes. But where it is fairly easy to identify if one supports MAGA, it's much harder to define and/or identify "woke";

2. MAGA has a leader whereas "woke" does not. I asked about whether a MAGA is a cult. The lack of a leader with woke kind of ruins your "opposite sides of a coin" assestion; and

3. You have no idea if I "like" woke. I don't really identify with "woke", chiefly because I don't know what it exactly means.

I’ll be curious to see what happens to the MAGA movement once Voldemort is no longer around, and I’d guess we won’t have to wait all that long to find out. Ten years?

Lmao read the definition YOU included in your own post. Maga is no less amorphous than woke. Woke is probably easier identify

It may be equally amorphous, but the clear difference is that MAGA is centered around a single personality, and ‘woke’ is not.
No less a cult. What’s more I’m not sure MAGA won’t survive post trump. There’s literature that it was festering long before trump. He just championed it

Just tells you what you need to know about republicans. “Woke” is among the highest insults, in their minds, that you can hurl at someone, so they keep throwing it around. It’s cool to call people woke as a put down. It’s how they can throw an all encompassing insult at minority groups like gays, blacks, trannys, whatever, without actually using an overly derogatory term.

MAGA is pretty much the definition of cult of personality.

His point was around a leader? Who is our leader? If nominated, I’d feel obliged to serve. And I’ll be selling blue hats with WOKE on them. Or maybe ZEKE?
Immaterial. You don’t need a leader for a cult. Read the definition in the original post. The idea for both will likely survive trump and probably the woke warriors

You’d be an excellent leader tho!

I think maga, amorphous as it is, captures the feelings of a large segment of the population. For better and worse. I don’t think it will die.

If you are suggesting that a certain kind of populism is what defines MAGA, then yes, it’s always going to be there, and it’ll exist without its patron saint. I fully agree with you there.

I see another side to MAGA, and that is a group of people that are swallowing the endless lies about deep state, election tampering and stealing, russia-and-Putin-are-good etc etc. All the silly shit. These ideas are coming straight from the addled dome of one man, and those MAGA followers think it’s all true. I believe once this character is gone, the ideation of this crap will disappear and significantly alter what MAGA means. It may still be populism, but will it be all this extra curricular stuff too? I suspect not.

It’s the same leader as antifa and blm. JFC, did you stop going to the meetings again?
Woke and antifa are much the same. Fantasy fear porn for the inherently fearful .. both generally describe idealogical concepts and are not organized groups.

BLM is different as it actually exists as an organized group but still doesn't have a cult like following. It's more a grift.

MAGA is not really a cult as a whole, but does have cult like elements and has many members with cult like beliefs about Trump... .

I think that’s fair

You might want to work on your reading comprehension skills. A cult is identified with a leader like Rev. Sun Young Moon or Donald Trump.

Woke doesn't have a leader. Most of us don't really have any attachment to woke because there is no real identified movement.

@mcmurtry66 I think we've finally found a fair opponent for some of your dream team.

Can you name a major cult that doesn't have/had a leader?

Are you able to read the definition you included in your original post? The two words after person, in particular? Ideal? Thing?

It's kind of funny how some people point at woke, BLM and/or Antifa where there really is no such organization. Just boogeyman words to yell out to decry people whose causes you disagree with.

Kind of like CRT. Lots of pearl clutching at some school board meetings when CRT is not being taught anywhere.

According to this definition, a body of people holding an individual in extreme scorn is also a cult.

MAGA is a result of the Tea Party. It's a movement that may take another name, but it will be the same movement, imo.

He does know how to put his name on shit and PROFIT.....

Still dumb ...
No, there is a mindset of the wokester which can only be understood thorugh the lens of a religion. Maybe not as cultish as MAGA (b/c I believe most cults do revolve a single person or singular idea) but there's something there which is destructive.

Maybe the wokesters are fine with tossing a few babies with the bathwater, but they should admit to that. They should admit that those people whose attitudes don't change fast enough should be left behind. That they are of no value. That is cultish thinking. There is no room for debate. Their thinking is incredibly binary. That's cult like.

So maybe not a full on cult but the woke thought process is as fatuous as America First!/MAGA!

What the f**k is a wokester?

I've never met one ... to me the only time I hear that damn word is when a old white person is offended .

as far as I'm aware, there isn't even a singular definition of woke (as in not many agree on what it actually means).

It just seems like a blanket insult lobbed at liberals. Not sure how it qualifies as a cult but everyone needs their yabbut.
