Indy 500 Thread

Still miss qualifying over two weekends … but the fast 9 is dramatic.

There would ne no point, of course, in having qulifying over so many days. There are only 34 entries. Everyone would qualify in one day anyway. Gone are the days with 15 to 20 additional teams trying to make the race, and a day of bumping at the end. Everyone, except one (ahem, RC Enerson) will be in.

I still love the 500, but the "month of may" is a shell of what it used to be.

Better technology over the years has really removed the required time to get "up to speed". So many of the things are a shell of what they used to be.

Race day is still the greatest sporting event on the planet though and with little to no competition. Maybe the World Cup Final.

But the Indy 500 raceday really is a tradition that won't ever go away. At least until EVs kill racing.

It is about that time. Lets hear your best infield stories.

Turn 3 is the place to be.
One of my regrets is when I was stationed at Grissom AFB IN I had the opportunity to go to the 500 and work in some capacity. I turned it down because i was newly married and didn't want to be away from my wife. Now I do love my wife but I should have gone. I did eat at a nice bbq near there once when I was a pastor in the area. I can't remember the name of the restaurant.

I would have given up going to the race for banging your wife too

Hell I won’t watch on tv this year if that’s all it takes

Barbecue and Bourbon?

Still better than NASCAR

Sure it will. And I damn well hope IMS stays relevant.
Competition caution to recharge batteries perhaps? There is practically no regenerative braking on Indy’s oval, unlike road courses.

I have a basic belief that someday we'll drive around in flying cars. Or be driven around by AI in flying cars.

Regardless, somebody smarter than me will figure it out. I just want IMS to remain at the forefront. Good for Indy. Good for the Midwest. Good for racing.

That would be a good example of real faith. Someone says, "I believe in AI" Then you say, "would you allow an AI to fly you around in a flying car?"

I'll always love Indy. I do miss second weekend deals where AJ pulls a car out of the garage and a driver without a ride gets it up to speed. I've had so many great memories from the race.

I used to sit in my backyard with a radio as a kid and listen to qualifications. A resident at the nursing home on my paper route was the last riding mechanic on the 1937 winning car. We talked about the race the entire month. I wouldn't find out he was in the winning car until many years later when the paper had a story on him. Jigger Johnson.

A local lawn and garden shop owner was friends with my dad. He bought used cars and tried for years to get in the race. My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I visited his shop at an open house and had our picture on the front page of our paper with the car. One of my old Industrial Arts teachers was a volunteer and the mechanic that worked on my wife's VW Rabbit was a mechanic. He got the car in the race. He started 32nd and finished 12th with Dennis Firestone.

I had a chance to talk to Donald Davidson and asked him if he remembered the owner and that car. Of course he remembered and told me that car was the same car that stock car driver Kenny Schroeder took his rookie tests in at the Speedway. He never made a qualification attempt. Many years later, Schroeder hunted the car down and bought it for his personal collection as it was the only Indycar he had driven at Indy. Somewhere the 500 car I sat in is sitting in a racecar drivers pole barn.

I have been at Indy on every race day since 1989 except 1993 when my wife was a week overdue with my daughter. My son and I drove up on race day 2020 and had a couple of beers and sat outside the IMS main entrance. Doug Boles came out and gave me a 500 flag for driving up from Evansville.

My son and I will be there together as we have since he was 7. My wife gave him her seat. After sitting through a rainout.

Really good stuff here. Thanks @iubud

Spec racing sux.

I hate the GP.

I am a Scrooge when it comes to May.
The Indy GP is okay. At least it is Indycars on the track and not the NASCAR boys slamming into each other. To me it is a new opening ceremony for the month. I haven't been to the GP, but I wouldn't be against going.

I went to one Brickyard race and sat near our 500 seats. I'm not a snob. I like country folks. I was raised that way before getting out into the world. The best way I can explain it is seeing NASCAR fans at IMS was like seeing UK fans in Assembly Hall. It didn't seem right.

This year's race will mark year #3 of myself and @UTFO riding bikes from the NE side of Indy to the track and back... It's really the only way to do it (unless you get can helicopter service LOL). Starting on the Monon Trail and then following the river to 16th St. Good times. Backpacks full of drinks n goodies. We start early and make plenty of stops along the way!!!! Plenty of stories but the only good ones are embarrassing for me. ha.

Had a buddy of mine wreck his bicycle after the race on the way to pick us up some White Castle one time. He came back all bloody but had a backpack full of White Castles.

Record 84 qualifying attempts yesterday… Race control started yellow flagging cars in their 2nd lap during happy hour.

Just about 4 mph difference from pole to p30, tight

Rahal May not make the race … didn’t qualify yesterday … Needs a big break to get in on the final row shootout.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing is in shambles. Hilarious that the only car they have in the field so far is the one-off driven by Legge, while their full time drivers Lungaard, Rahal, and Harvey need to battle it out with Sting Ray Robb for the last row. Hell, Sting Ray was pretty close to being quicker than Legge, which would have created an all RLL Racing bump day. But Legge making it while the rest didn't, that's gold. Good for her.

I hope Graham misses out after talking shit about my man Romain. Eff that guy.

What's the format with the top 12? Do they get to try again or is the pole set?

All 12 re-qualify today.
The fastest 6 of that run then re-qualify from 5:15 - 5:45.
It's manufactured excitement, that is intriguing, but they're eventually going to get someone hurt or killed for no good reason.
The wind was tricky yesterday. It's calm & cool (mid 70's) today. I assume the speeds will be faster.

Graham's contract is up after this season. Earlier this week, he was openly talking about leaving his dad's team.

Those advancing to Fast 6 for a run at the pole at 5:15 (speeds will be quicker during Happy Hour)...

Santino Ferrucci, 233.911, "I want to break history and I want a damn pole." AJ Foyt
Rinus VeeKay, 233.801; his practice earlier today ended early with a mechanical issue, but the team recovers and he is in the Fast Six. Ed Carpenter
Alex Palou, 233.779 Chip Ganassi
Scott Dixon, 233.430; he earns a spot in the Fast Six. He is trying to become the first driver in race history to win the pole position in three straight years. Chip Ganassi
