Indiana post a 2-0 win over SIU/Edwardsville

Hoosiers Beat SIU-Edwardsville, 2-0, in Spring Match

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –
The Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars, 2-0, in a spring match on Saturday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.

Andrew Gutman and Tim Mehl each had goals for the Hoosiers, while Rees Wedderburn tallied an assist in the victory.Christian Lomeli made six saves in goal for Indiana.

In the sixth minute, the Hoosiers scored off a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead over SIUE. After a great run down the right side of the box from Tanner Thompson drew a corner kick, Wedderburn sent in a great ball, finding Gutman who buried the header in the top right corner from six yards out to give the Hoosiers the lead.

In the 81st minute, the Hoosiers struck once more, again off a set piece. After a great run from Phil Fives down the pitch, IU received a free kick after a SIUE foul just outside the 18-yard box.

Just a few yards right of center, 19 yards out, Mehl struck a beautiful shot, beating the SIUE goalkeeper to the top right corner, pushing Indiana's winning margin to 2-0.

Gutman, Cory Thomas and Trevor Swartz each had two shots for the Hoosiers, with Thomas getting both of his looks on goal. In total, IU out-shot SIUE, 9-8.

The Indiana men's soccer team will return to the pitch on April 9, when the Hoosiers will travel to Ft. Wayne, Ind. to face in-state rival Notre Dame. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
