I really hate humanity sometimes.

Instead of phones and computers (which we couldn't afford even if they were available), she just sent us outside. We were only expected to be back by supper. I realize you can't do that now.

My mom would throw us out of the house, tell us to not come back until suppertime, and to stay in "the yard". Since we lived smack dab in the middle of a 1200 acre property, that gave us plenty of room to roam.

I don't buy that. Dad worked full time as did Mom, plus he farmed. Spring and fall, he'd get 3-4 hours of sleep for weeks at a time. All 4 of us are successful by most standards. The difference is family. We had grandparents, aunts, and uncles who would **** us up in an instant if we were out of line and our parents weren't around.

We've lost the extended family. We weren't allowed to plop down in front of the TV or play Atari all day. We had to go do stuff and we were held responsible for our behavior.

It doesn't take a village. It takes a family.
Bingo…that’s what I’ve been trying to say and obviously am not talented enough.

This story has ruined my day. Don’t scroll down if you don’t want yours ruined.

Mother sentenced to life in prison after leaving baby alone for 10 days in a pack and play while she went on vacation with a guy friend.

This story literally brought tears to my eyes. To imagine what that child went through.
I've often thought the world would be a wonderful place if not for human beings. If only the good lord would have stopped creating after the 5th day

I find people who can’t admit to their vulnerabilities—and go further and claim that those that recognize theirs are weak—are typically the weak ones, so scared someone might see a weakness in them, they have to project a tough guy image and bad mouth others.
A lot of that is true. Those posters who usually bad mouth other posters here are the most conspicuous examples of weaknesses. We all have vulnerabilitie. But often those won’t be relevant to discussing politics or policy issues.

Understood, and good on her for not taking on clients looking for easy fixes or "validation" of their disappointments. Would she at least acknowledge there are clinicians that do?
She doesn't prescribe anything. She works with a psychiatrist as well to try and ensure they do right by the kid, but the missus makes a recomendation then the psychatirst sees the patient and the two egg head docs sit and talk. They very rarely listening to the parents' desires--but they do want to hear about behavior. I would guess that there are several doctors who choose the medicinal route-but they might be general practioners rather than psyciatrists. Good therapists know that medicine will help you cope better, but take for for example, ADHD, it won't improve your executive functioning where you can can consider yourself "cured" for lack of a better word. that involves MASSIVE investment by the kid, the parent, the therapist and the schools (which actually do a great job helping with ADHD).

I would wear the cover off soccer balls. Literally the ball would fall apart. From the moment School ended until called in for bath time. I NEVER see kids practicing alone today

I will add that the tech shit is ubiquitous and normalized. My daughter sees a specialist for stomach shit. Last time we there the nurse wanted to know if my little guy (almost 3) wanted a tablet. Wtf. No. He needs to learn to sit without incessant screens/entertainment. But they were passing out tablets like pez
I remember when tablet meant “Big Chief” and a pencil.

My exstoker and her new guy just bought an 800k house. Two new cars. Daycare. My minion and she’s pregnant. 31 and 32 yrs old. You think they are going to have time for kids or be working their asses off to make that nut and sticking tablets in front of the kids with what little time there is in the evening to get shit done

Does she come from the behavioral modification school? Cognitive/behavioral? One trope that I think has a lot of validity in many cases is "You can act your way into good thinking long before you can think your way into good acting." Of course, I took a bunch of Psych courses when I was in school, and IU at the time was known to be strictly behavioralist in its approach, with BF Skinner having been on the faculty early on, so that has had an effect on my thinking.

I grew up in a town of 2,000 people. Every parent did the same thing and there were literally roaving gangs of kids out in the town all day. Usually riding bikes or playing pickup basketball and football (tackle, of course) in the park, which was a nice park for a small town.

My favorite times were rolling BB gun wars. Every kid had a BB gun.

When we lived on the farm, we used to bicycle down to the neighbor's house or go into any woods, of which there were many around.

It was a great childhood, but even then we still whined about being bored. But, as Hooky said, if we ever got out of line, relatives or neighbors stepped in and took care of things.

Hell yes, they can. You're financing a large part of it, aren't you?

Some but no. I pay much more to the ex wife.
An $800,000 house in your early 30s just sounds insane to me, unless they're really big earners.

My son-in-law is a bond trader at a well-known firm and he makes major jack - he bought one in the $700s and I thought he was crazy, but that's the going rate in their neighborhood. And they're all young. Just amazing to me.

When I worked in Europe in the 90s, 40 year mortgages were a big thing. Then, at least in France, they started multi-GENERATIONAL loans. Crazy.

She makes nothing. Pennies. He works at a rent a car company. Runs a bunch of locations. They pay a lot if you get a good area. Grad school etc. unnecessary. Long hours tho. But straight from college has ten years in. By 40 will make a boatload.

“Seeing their shit” is a problem that happens between your ears. If your reaction to that is negative, that is where you look to fix it.

A social media problem is many things. But one of the more important ones is being led to anger, dispair, or other negative feelings by what is on your screen. It encompasses the whole idea of trigger warnings, safe spaces etc. All of that signals a weakness that is internal, not a problem that is external.

Oh, and BTW...thanks for the many lessons.

Marv needs to focus his efforts on men's basketball and baseball, in that order.
No Marv is going to take over football. For basketball I’m bringing crean back. I like him. Don’t care about baseball. I will remove the track for soccer tho

Why? Beyond the “everybody’s a pedo” thing. I figure now is the SAFEST time in history to let your kid roam free. They’ve got GPS in their pocket.

We let the daughter ride her bike as far as she could. She’d ride 5 miles to get to a friends house. Where they’d hang out on their phones.

Sorry Mark--i missed this. It is more Cognitive than anything as I understand it because 90% of ADHD is accompanied by depression and it becomes a chicken and egg thing (not my words and I'm just a dummy in this regard, but I do pretend to listen a lot at home 😁). I"m sure that it is more complicated but she's a michigan grad and probably feels like she has to dumb it down for me lol

The number of people that really have “issues” is extremely low. A lot of “depression” is self-created. Johnny goes on vacation but I couldn’t afford to go. Well….neither could Johnny
Yeah I don’t think that’s true . At all.

Not to speak for Spartans but he’s a pharmacist. The amount of people on adderall and the ease of prescriptions for same is astonishing. Hell it was out for a while. Now there’s another variety of it that too can be hard to get. Check out the side effects of adderall.

I do think much (some) of what we see is self induced, generational, cultural (social media) etc.

My daughter bitched all week bc we didn’t go to the beach for spring break. Texting with her friends on vaca. That’s a 7th grader

Look at opioid use and the correlation to depressive disorder
Adderall isn’t for a mental illness Though. I Don think we as a society are too quick to reach for a quick fix, Ala pharmaceuticals. But to say that the number of people who really has “issues” ( as he put it ) is extremely low is just wrong.

Give me a percentage

I was unclear. Adderall is too routinely prescribed and read the side effects it brings.
