Has patriotism in the U.S. become political?

No, it doesn't matter where you sit, and no, I'm not doing any of that. The world is better now than it was way back then. It sucks, but it's far better. That's simply a fact.
In some areas it’s much better, others not so much. Americans have never been more depressed, more obese, more medicated, more likely to commit suicide, more likely to OD, more likely to believe God doesn’t exist and more likely to spend time alone than today. From a health standpoint, we’ve never been worse off than we are today.

Sure we have. Health in the early 1800s wasn't great. Medicine sucked back then. Were people fatter? No. Did they starve? Yes.

While true, that isn’t necessarily the time period in question is it? Isn’t the premise of MAGA looking at the recent past?

I agree, but would consider those economic issues. We’ve obviously advanced in those areas. Mentally and physically we’ve never been worse off in my opinion. Also, I think a major shift occurred around 1960s-70s that has been detrimental to society.

What shift are you referring to re mental and physical health?

Medicine has greatly improved but the quality and healthiness of the food and diets are much worse, mostly in name of profits.

Bread is made cheaply which has removed much of the nutritional value to the point it isn't much better than just eating a donut (a slight exaggeration).

Food is full of hormones/preservatives to help make it more profitable

Some food even gets unnecessarily filled with food dye just so it looks like we expect it to.

Medicine - better
Diets/Food quality - worse, much much worse

I meant to add cultural shift. There is probably dozens of variables that has affected it, but the 3 main things in my opinion are going off the gold standard, away from God, and advancements in technologies.

Edit: @BradStevens I mean the away from God in a very literal sense…i.e. The breakdown of the institution of marriage.

There is a tendency among some members of the Republican tribe - and this predates MAGA by quite a bit - to characterize Democrats as inherently unamerican. This politicization of patriotism only lands if that characterization speaks to you.
There is also a tendency among some members of the Dem tribe to characterize anyone exhibiting patriotism as a nationalist, so that’s a two way street as well.

"Exhibiting patriotism" is virtue signaling.

Some old stats on this that show less national pride among “solid liberals” than others:

He may do some positive things. Stuff isn't black and white. People aren't pure evil or pure good.

He still sounds like a douche
I was going to leave this alone but I am going to answer. This man treated his employees like every douche like you would want an employer to do.

I was at his property on a glacier lake in northern New York. He had a problem with his fire pit. He texted one of his employees. His employee along with his wife rushed over at 9pm to fix it. I talked to both. They gushed how great my friend treats them. They mentioned he helped them sit up their own business. They sat around the pit and drank with us. They were treated like family.

The dumb woke bullshit you liberals are pushing down our throats has become unbearable. Millions of good people are tired of it and they are going to get in your face and give it back.

This man is a better person than you could ever hope to be.

Edit: at 5’6” and 70 years old he could kick your ass if you had the nerve to call him a douche to his face.

lol, he may be a good guy in some aspects but some parts that you wanted to highlight about him make him sound just as douchy as you.

You think a good person would have a sentence in their post "the dumb woke bullshit you liberals..." Yeah, you're a douche based on how you choose to post on this board..

And if he is someone that would kick a person's ass for standing up to his political bull crap then yes, he is definitely a douche. thanks for confirming.

AH... People in Kentucky recognize an IU hat, may despise it, but they understand it. I'd wear mine there proudly, all day long.

People in FL see a red hat, don't know what IU is, don't recognize the logo, don't know the team colors, and think it looks like a MAGA hat. It appears to them, at first glance, that you are wearing a MAGA hat, which is pretty much the equivalent of you wearing a swastika.
My first assignment after commissioning was at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida and I disagree. There are tons of IU alumni and fans in Florida. Even people that aren't fans would usually know about IU and ask about Bob Knight. I was a Freshman when Knight was fired so I could talk about that but not so much about the rest of his time at IU. My experience in Florida is that a lot of people recognize the IU logo and colors.

I’m in Fla all the time. No sane person thinks that re maga. Tho I wouldn’t wear a red hat to begin with

I spent 2 weeks in the Bay area over Thanksgiving and had a red IU hat on most of the time. I got a go Hoosiers a couple of times and had a conversation with a group of guys from Cal about whether or not they'd end up in the big ten.

Regardless, who gives a crap what strangers may think about them because they have a red hat on or worries about a stranger in the distance who has a red hat on?

I agree. I think it's a bit over the top to not wear an IU hat just because it is red.

I only have 1 IU hat and I wear it when I want to. it's an IU red so darker than a MAGA hat anyway.

I'm not that well versed in the pantone of the red MAGA hat compared to the IU crimson, so I'll take your word for it. 😁

The Cal conversation started with a "Boo Stanford" comment off to my side. It's not like IU or MAGA are the only other red hats you'd see out in the wild anyway.

Okay perfect. My impression of you remains a rugged survivalist

In south Florida it pretty much is

Marlins, Rays, Dolphins, Heat, Jaguars, Gators, Hurricanes

not a red hat in any sports fandom other than an occasional Tampa Bay Bucs one, and most of those are black or pewter

So what?

Maybe just carry yourself with some confidence, be polite, smile when someone makes eye contact and quit worrying about dumb stuff like the color of people's hats and the opinions of strangers.

I disagree with you on quite a bit, but honestly this hat thing just makes you sound pathetic and you just keep doubling down on it.

It is silly no matter where you live.
