Correct. But he would have been the first president to be impeached and removed from office. He resigned in order to escape being impeached, and who knows, he may have been promised that if he resigned then he wouldn't have been charged with a crime. Or it could have been just understood that no one would bring charges . . . .
Since then we've had two to be impeached, but not removed from office. And maybe Trump has breached all norms that might have protected him from charges . . . .

Not to go too far down the conspiracy rabbit hole, but would it really surprise anyone that a back-channel deal was made between Bragg and Carroll's lawyers to go through with this potentially frivolous indictment just to get their hands on Trump's DNA?
Trump's lawyers have been playing the delay-game in that lawsuit to prevent Trump's DNA from being compared to her crusty garment for literal years now. If he is indicted, will they take a DNA swab, and would that be allowed to then be used in a different litigation? I honestly don't know.

Trump knew the hush money could come back to haunt him which is why he probably wanted to remain president and explains in part why he was so unwilling to leave the Whitehouse. Trump took his chance and threw caution to the wind and it gained him the presidency, but the chickens have come home to roost now.
I can agree with this, Trump's arrogance will be his undoing. He's sloppy. Really, really sloppy.
But I can't get on board with this being anything other than a (somewhat) politically motivated course of action that, while justifiable, will probably backfire on the Dems.
Which just means more divisiveness. More siloed opinions. More acrimony. Less and less community. I mean, we're fighting over Trump's predilection for whores and a payoff which cannot possibly be the first for a man running for president.
