Gen Z employees

There are some good ones. I've got a few. But damn, their motivations are just wholly different than mine. I'm trying to understand it and failing miserably.
OH that one that I shit canned last week was the exact opposite! But there is hope, I think. He told me, after setting at home a couple days, "with time to clear my head, everything that you said about me was correct".
Maybe he can do like we had to. Use a failure to make a positive for the rest of his life. I want everyone to succeed, and some times that requires a swift kick in the pants, so to speak.

I had one of mine come in yesterday crying his eyes out. A total blubbering hot mess. I said WTF?
He said that his mom had OD'ed this morning. He said that she was still alive, for now anyway. I asked WTF are you here then? He said that he isn't one to miss work and would feel bad not coming in.
I said get the eff out of here, go be with your mom! Then I got a big old dad type hug.

I'll probably fire him Monday.

KIDDING (about the firing part)!
Like his commitment if not his judgment. Commitment like that is rare these days. Some of these dudes call off with a sniffle.

That's definitely old school. What I've seen over the years, and it's not unique to any one age group or so-called "generation", is that people will generally do what's asked of them while they're on the job, but that their dedication to the job may not be as strong as owners/management think it should be.

that's why letting them have a little skin in the game, regardless if it's even token, helps immensely

That's supposed to be the case, but even then it doesn't always translate. Back when I was in the dealership parts world, everyone got a low base salary and got a monthly "bonus" based on departmental sales. The problem was that even if they worked hard and did everything that was asked of them, if there was a down month through no fault of theirs, they took the hit (along with everyone else). Sure, they would benefit in a strong month, but even then it couldn't be attributed to them, just that the whole outfit got a big bonus and they got their share.

If I had to set it up, I'd make the salary fully sufficient and appropriate, and make the "bonus" an actual bonus for good production, and not necessarily something you should count on.

He is from Owen county, has cow horns mounted to his truck hood.
Not the chronic Hillary deciple.
Proof that there’s hope! Don’t give up yet!

I had a yearly review with my office manager for one of my MA’s. My comment: Except for her Gen Z attendance, she’s pretty good. I’m an X’er and my 2 kids work like dogs. But overall my generation SUCKEDas parents

This thread made me go into the way back machine and think of an old Bocephus song.
"He got bent outta shape
opened his mouth
just one appointment
Straightened him right out,
It was an
Attitude adjustment, it'll work every time".

:)

My experience is that they really want and need constant feedback. It’s a 180 from Gen Xers who just want to be left alone and get their shit done.
Most do but not my two kids. Granted they are not in the work world yet but they would actually rather be left alone to do homework, etc. and one already got a full college ride for academics next year and the other probably will as well. I guess its good my wife is smart as hell they got it from her. Having a tough mom who did not buy into the medals for everyone thing helped imo.
