Gamblers threatening MLB players with graphic violence.

It shouldn't be necessary, but the simple solution is for the players to get off social media.
Not all the threats are on social media. They threaten them at games. I'm sure they find phone numbers and threaten them that way too.

This should be a felony crime.
Whodathunk that letting the degenerates control all the vibe and extracurriculars of sports, politics, and society might have negative consequences?

But sure, the best answer is for the people involved in the actual substance to shut up and hide because who knows what the degenerates we empower and encourage might do.

Gambling has become the tail that wags the dog.
Gambling is fun and it’s absurd Missouri has casinos but prohibits online. My college roommate’s son made his mls debut. On our group chat everyone was betting on him to score. I had to Venmo a buddy on our team to bet for me or drive to Illinois. I can’t imagine watching THE PROBLEM CHILD fight without betting

So not unlike guns these aholes are going to potentially ruin stuff for the rest of us

Not to be flip or anything, but maybe this explains why there are only 13 guys with a batting average of .300 or better . . .
The game has been rendered nearly unwatchable by analytics. I usually will still catch at least part of most Cubs games but I'm a glutton for punishment.

Launch angle says the line drive swing is out. Gotta swing for the dinger even if it means less men on base, lower BA, more strike outs, and an overall less appealing game. However, trying to put band aids on the use of analytics by banning the shift just makes it worse. As far as I'm concerned you should be able to place your 7 guys anywhere you want on the diamond. What a ridiculous rule to dictate where defenders can set up.

Switch to cricket. It's quite exhilarating.

Hate it. Used to love baseball.

You see this the other day? USA upsets Pakistan in Crickett (apparently a MASSIVE upset) and one of the stars players for the U.S.? Principal Technical Engineer at Oracle. That's America baby.

I imagine there will be rioting in Pakistan and deaths over this. They take their Crickett seriously.

Agree on shifts. Let’s mandate all football teams must use 5 defensive linemen, 3 LBs and 3 defensive backs.

If you’re a hitter, learn to hit to all fields.

Make me the Commissioner and there will be no DH and MLB teams can only have 8 pitchers - 4 starters and 4 relievers - on staff. Pitch to contact. Less strain on arms. More complete games. Fewer strikeouts. No more relief specialists.

“Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they’re fascist.”

The average game time of a MLB game in 2024 is 2:36.

What’s your point?

2019-2022 - the average game was over 3 hours. 2023 - 2 hours and 42 minutes. Most people would say that’s a good thing. The pitch clock works. No more human rain delays.

But what does that have to do with the overall quality of hitting, pitching and defense? Or, for that matter, gambling?

Your post had zero to do with gambling, for that matter.

The idea of limiting pitchers would be to limit pitching changes, no? They have rules to deal with that.

My point is the game is at a much better pace.

8 total pitchers on a team would do the opposite of what you think would happen, I'd imagine.

Open to your idea(s).

Bob Gibson had 28 complete games in 1968. There were 34 in all of MLB in 2023. Now, Gibson was an athletic freak, but there were many starters with double-digit complete games stats back in the day. I’d venture there were fewer arm injuries. Now, everyone has to throw close to 100 mph.

Pitch like Greg Maddux - yeah, I know, easy to say; next to impossible to do - and don’t walk anybody. (Second to Robin Roberts in the “live ball era” in lowest walk rate. Having faced over 20,000 batters and not many walks and a good deal of those were intentional.)

I would bank on the game being better if there were far fewer relief specialists. I would venture there would be far fewer arm injuries and far fewer Tommy John procedures if there were to be a change in pitching thought.

Why did all that change? On local radio they talk nonstop about cards’ pitching. 5 innings is the goal for starters.

The great dunk artist is revered. The guy with the great mid-range game not so much.

The guy who can bring heat is revered. The guy who can paint the corners not so much.

Kids and sports execs are the same. Easily impressed with the flash.

Gotta be able to bring the heat. The margin for error for corner painters is just too small now days. Look at poor Kyle Hendricks. His career is over.

Maybe.

Probably.

Teach kids how to properly pitch. Stop making “heat” mistakes in Aaron Judge’s wheelhouse.

The kids who can’t learn control can play second base . . .

Agreed, the pitch clock is one of the few MLB innovations that seems to work.

That starting on 2nd base shit in OT is just ridiculous.

I agree completely with putting players where you want to. The hitters need to adjust and make them pay for their shifts instead of swinging for the fence every time.

It's not just the fastballs that are/were getting people, it's the strain on the arm doing an unnatural motion while throwing a curveball.

For every Bob Gibson or Greg Maddux, I can come back with a Kerry Wood (who's arm couldn't stay healthy but had one of the best curves I've ever seen) or probably the most famous being Sandy Koufax, who retired at 30. Hell, when I coached little league, I wouldn't let kids throw a curve because I didn't want them to mess their arm up while still developing. That's not, or wasn't done, by everyone in the league.

No matter how you slice it, this isn't 40 years ago. They start training younger and specialize a lot more in one sport. Every arm has a clock. There's no reason to speed that clock up when it's not necessary.
