First (2nd) Portal addition coming?...

You're probably going to need $12M to build a top 25 roster. A few more if you want a potential title contender.
It is totally insane imo. Not even sure why the top schools need to hand out free educations on top of that. I assume some of them are probably not even going to class just taking online tests. These are not student athletes they are paid professionals period. I guess we can just call it the NBA 2.0 but it is what it is.

It is why I dont get why a school like minnesota fired their coach. He did not do a bad job given he had no money. It does not matter who they hire they have a crap NIL.

I would agree but the scholarship doesn't really "cost" the school anything, they can admit one extra kid somewhere else to make up for it. And a kid evaluating NIL offers from School A where it's all cash vs. IU asking him to pay back his tuition, well....

ESPN paid 7.8 billion dollars for the rights to the college football playoff through the 31-32 season. We're well beyond 'free education' as an adequate form of payment.....

Geno Auriema had some good comments on this topic. The sooner everyone adapts their mindset...EVERYONE adapts their mindset, past these kids being amateur athletes... then it'll be a lot easier to get behind and support it more fully again.

Contracts, buyouts, tampering rules with teeth, portal rules...these are rules that should be adopted. That way schools, fans, coaches, AND the athletes can stop playing both sides of the amateur/pro images...

As long as these players realize they are now paid professionals and not student athletes anymore. So they need to quit crying about people being critical of them because when you are a paid athlete and not a student athlete its a whole different ballgame.

I don't like our chances at this point. This thing should've been wrapped up last night.
If Louisville wasn't a part of his original plan, and he's added them... then at the risk of being too pessimistic... He's gone. And that would suck. Even though all of our hope with him was probably misguided and based on a couple random X posters that may, or may not, be plugged in...

3 weeks from today the transfer portal closes- glad we have some assistants but we now need a team!

Is it known that Devries has similar NIL money to what Woody had? If so, I find the lack of any player committing to be a bit ominous.

It sure seems alot of schools are already getting guys. Aren't we going to need like at least 10 new players and maybe 11? Does not seem so far getting a head start has done us any good.
I'm trying to be patient and optimistic, but it's getting tougher by the day. Time to start hearing some commitments.

I hesitate to reference @Igor... he's already had a handful of misses. But he just posted Dix has eliminated IU and Kansas, down to Creighton and Illinois.

Not sure I even wanted either of those guys (Dix or Freeman)...but not getting them still has me worried. Ha ha.

I hope 3-4 weeks from now I can look back at my April 1 self and slap him around for being a whiny little B...

We may see all the "name brand" kids going with "name brand" coaches. I have nothing against DeVries but that was always a potential downside of hiring a coach with no track record.
But he had no skeletons. That was the very first requirement for iu.

That doesn’t mean the portal ends. It just means kids can’t enter. The dead period starts next week I think.

Louisville, Texas, and IU have always been in his plans.

there are 1700 kids in the portal, maybe 20-30 have committed. Over half of the returning players in the country are in the portal and we are still 3 weeks from it closing, we will be fine

Is he still around? Seems like ages ago Purdue thought they had him and Miami swooped in with a bag.

I see the end to a lot of smaller schools. They can't compete with lower budgets and lack of NIL funds.
Read a week or 2 ago his next stop was L'ville after IU. Certainly observing Coach Devries is a different animal compared to Woodson. That's a good sign.

Why is it necessary to get behind it and support it? Ok, they aren’t amateurs anymore, but some schools are closer to it than others.

There are underdogs everywhere in this. Should a Drake have any business beating a Kansas with the system that exists? Nope, not in a million years. The system sucks, but what can you do? Hope that College basketball implodes? It’s not going to happen.

But, it doesn’t take too hard of a look to see which teams are the biggest villains in all of this. Money will win in the end, but at least there will be programs that are sporting the biggest black hats and tons, and tons of little guys playing spoiler that the underdog chasing fans can root for. Will it be common to see a top 10 payroll team miss the NCAAs? Probably not, but a fan can dream.

17 of the top 50 on 247 have already committed. Iowa got the #1 guy, UCLA the #2. And Purdue and Michigan already have top 20ish guys.

Devries wasn't my guy, and I'm already having Archie flashbacks. No players came with him from WV. All this top secret bullshit about the staff. Problems assembling what appears to be a mediocre staff. No public appearances.

He's apparently struck out on his first 2 options. And Enright prefers Iowa? Wtf. Can we at least get the big guy?

I told you Ryan Conwell wants a money bag let him walk.

I think you mean, if we are held over a money barrel by players trying to run up the price tag, I agree.

All we have is money and the unknown to offer these players, and playing for a coach that will design his offense around his son.
As for Conwell, his first two stops he didn't get a dime and went to those schools because of the good ol' coaches pitch. Then they moved on to more money and better gigs after a year. Then IU made a weak ass late pitch after signing Rice and Carlyle. I'd wager he took less money to go to Xavier, where his coach again got a massive pay raise and a better job. What would you do? If my agent tells me I can get 1.5-2m from a couple of schools, I'm checking them out.

Actually, most places the athletic dept pays the university for the cost of tuition for the athletes on scholarship

So his kid is not coming? Who are the top 2 options (yes we have had visits, but there will be more) that have committed elsewhere? 17 of the top 50, may very well end up all outside of the top 50 when it is all said and done!!

And it'll take one to two good seasons, max, to be enough of a 'name brand' to reach elite recruiting instead of good recruiting.

Not like DeVries has no track record or connections. Win here and he'll be rolling.

This is what is the downfall of the college basketball will be. I can't wait for a cap.

Don't need Goode. He was streaky at best and a poor defender. Get Dix,Mack/Enright,DeVries, and Conwell. Then go after WV big,Bidunga, and 3 more front liners. Fill in the other 2 with decommits HSers and Sisley.
Disagree. Always good to have a shooter that can come off the bench. He’s pretty reliable with the ball, can light it up if he’s “on”, and can hit FT at a high clip.

If Coach DeVries knows or thinks a kid will be beneficial to the TEAM then I would guess IU would offer the kid what they feel that kid’s worth is. Most of the top rated kids aren’t going to fit in the new system/culture. I’m sure IU has learned that paying the biggest top dogs doesn’t always pan out to reach the TEAM goals.

I forgot to add.....no WV recruits came with, not just existing players.
