Creans recruiting is killing that kid. Imagine if he was your son with dreams of being an NBA shooting guard. You go to college guard 7 footers and get demolished as an undersized center. No guard development at all because coach can't recruit.

CH is starting for Indiana as a soph....

and is getting big minutes. CH is turning into a versatile 3 position player (4 in a pinch) that will be invaluable to IU and any future teams that he is on. CH realizes the incredible opportunity he has earned and is making the most of it.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the heads up. The original post was a head scratcher. I wasn't aware Colin was a potential NBA guard.

We get it. Collin is your nephew...

but you might want to learn how to spell his name for future Christmas/Birthday cards.

bingo..I do believe ...

his expectations/hopes for an NBA career may have flown out the window with his first ACL.... the least he can hope for now is a solid career at IU... which ..... as a sophmore... is looking pretty damn good.... imagine him with two more years of development and weight... Love what this kid is bringing this season especially after being forced into that position by circumstances beyond his control... hang in there CH... we really want to see what more you can bring to the game for IU... stay positive minded and focused... great job...

Yeah, starting at IU as an underclassman...tough luck, Colin

Dreams are made of such.

If Colin was my son... I'd be at every game cheering and supporting the team.

Is this a serious post?

Of all the things you could be complaining about, this is the one? At least it is a different sob story... I'll give you THAT.

Can't recruit?

One thing he does not deserve criticism for is recruiting. I think he has done a good job bringing in talent. He didnt know that Luke Fisher was going to transfer when he recruited him and Peter Jurkin wasnt going to develop. For the most part, he has brought in some pretty solid classes of 4 and 5 star players and done a good job recruiting locally. With that being said, I cannot defend his coaching strategies. He makes a lot of decisions that are very questionable.

You should be happy. At least this is a different stoopid complaint.

As opposed to the same ol same ol. Only this one makes even less sense.

It's a completely fair (and accurate IMO) criticism, probably just poorly

worded. As you point out, CTC has recruited enough "highly rated" talent or developed it, but as the OP points out, not in the post. No one knows who will transfer, flunk out, get hurt, etc... but every coach has to balance their roster to prepare for these events. It's not unheard of, or even uncommon. The problem as I see it, is CTC doesn't value size like most other top 50 programs do. CTC prefers to play 1 post with 4 guards/wings, maybe a stretch 4 like Watford. He seems to overly value "shooting and scoring" at all positions, and doesn't seem to see much value in a "paint protector" if they can't score. Lot's of other programs do see a value in that type of player, especially ironically enough, the last 2 Natl Champs. Whereas most top 50 programs have at least 4 or 5 roster spots (often more) devoted to guys 6'9" or above, generally 3-4 that can play now and a couple developing for future years.

CTC only wants to play with 1 post spot, so generally he's run with only 2-3 posts on the roster. If all stay, stay healthy and eligible that can work, but it leaves us ill-prepared to deal with any of the above emergencies, and so far, little to develop. We have had a similar problem for 2 years (since Remy Abell left) at PG, and should have identified a PG in last year or this years class, but fortunately Yogi has stayed and has been very durable. Compare that to WI who lost their 3-4 yr starting PG and really haven't missed a beat, and also had their All American starting C go down and have done well, except for the hiccup vs Rutgers when I think both were out. Look at our current roster, we have 1 true starting/playing PG, 1 true starting/playing post, 1 "developing post, and 10 roster spots devoted to wings or undersized forwards (1-2 of which can backup at PG and 3 that have to backup in the post despite being out of position or undersized). What do we have for next year where we are already overcommitted by 2? another wing and undersized PF. No post, no PG. It's a BIG problem and totally fair criticism, imo.

Re: Can't recruit?

His recruiting is shaky if you look at the makeup of each class....he has brought in some studs but how many really good 4 year guys have we had? Not a ton in his 7 years.

And they are. Even made the trip to Wiscy in bad weather. Heck

even locals did not attend the game. I think Colin is getting good publicity for what he is doing. He has been able to show of his range in shooting, ability to fight for rebounds, play defense, and his overall court and game awareness. Not much to complain about. If it shooting, he is getting plenty of time and opportunities to show that off.

He's also getting alot of good looks

Due to the big guys that are trying guard him out of the lane.

I'd argue that his offensive stats would be much lower (as they were earlier in the year), if Hanner wouldn't have gotten hurt, allowing him get more PT and show off his skills.

If Cody, Hanner and Noah were running guard drills

then CH is too. At IU everyone learns to dribble.

Re: Is this a serious post?

So does he recruit well and cant coach or is it both? Because if your saying he is a great recruiter than he is a bad coach because the results are not matching up.

Watford and Hulls

just off the top of my head and Prichard and Roth was here for 4 years and got his degree and I know he had one year of eligibility left.

Re: Watford and Hulls

Yes Scott there is some.....but look how many transfers he has and how young we continue to be. Young is fine if your recruiting like UK, Kansas and DUke but we are not recruiting like them.

Zeisloft

Is a great example of a good experience player brought in to counter the transfers, which simply are a fact of life in CB today. I know most slammed him when that was announced, but seems like a brilliant move in retrospect.

Re: Zeisloft

Is it really paying off? He is just another guard...something we are not lacking

Re: I see coaching in this CH after college more than NBA - nm

How many Ex-Crean players turn into coaches? Coach K's entire staff is ex-players.

Re: Zeisloft

I believe so -- definitely adds another scoring threat, but probably even more on the leadership/communication side of things. As you mentioned, we were lacking experience in a big way coming into this year, and he adds some of that, and that shouldn't be underestimated.

Do wish we would've landed a good big (especially one of of the transfers)-- of course. But given the options, I like the Zeisloft get. Same with Holt (who btw will be one of those very good 4 yr players you mention).

Re: Zeisloft

How do you know that? You could of said the same about Remy, Hollowell, Nick WIlliams, Malik Story, Luke FIscher, etc..at this point in their career

I agree.

But what about Jeremiah? If it wasn't for CTC's 4-guard offense, he'd be getting playing time at the 3, 4, or 5 and he'd be shooting up draft boards like Noah did.

And I feel sorry for Tim, too. I see him transferring to Indiana State and probably going to the Celtics after a couple of years because Crean is doing him no favors having him ride the pine.

Re: Zeisloft

I assume you mean how do I know that he adds MORE than those guys who left?

I don't--just like you don't know if those guys you list were a cancer in the locker room, were skipping classes and smoking weed.. etc, etc. We know Hollowell was a turnover machine.

I'm just living in the present and looking toward the future vs. whining about whether Luke Fischer was actually homesick or not. Nothing we can do about those guys.

...on THIS team, and I think into next year, Zeisloft will continue to be a solid upperclassmen contributor.

I'm the president of the Hartman bandwagon...

While he may have had growing up dreams of being an NBA SG, that's not where anyone recruited him to play. Furthermore, both on his school and summer teams, he played out of position at the PF spot, so this isn't new for him, including guarding 7'0"'ers. At the HM level, he was in most eyes a SF. At the MM level, he was likely a combo forward. In many systems there are some meshing of SG/SF, but Hartman is still more toward the SF/PF direction. Versatile, yes, but not in the way you're talking.

Re: I see coaching in this CH after college more than NBA - nm

It's not about Crean. It's about Hartman and he seems to have a really high BB IQ and appears to possess some leadership qualities on the court.

I don't understand when people make this assumption

about intangibles (leadership) that Ziesloft brings to the table. He is a good shooter, a streaky shooter. He has games like Wednesday night and he has games when he's off for the entire night. He's an adequate ball handler. Too turnover prone. He's not a good defender. He's Matt Roth on the nights he's "on".

You're not the first person I've seen post about the "leadership" thing. I'm not trying to rip the guy but I think if there's a big dependence on NZ, it's not a good thing.
