I'm confused by the whiplash. Prior to Term 1 this wasn't a great country? (That was the first id heard that except from some on the left usually saying we are racist) Trump made it great, but it didn't feel that way for everyone because they turned around and voted in Sleepy. In previous years I had long conversations (arguments at times) with the liberals here about making English the official language. Liberals hated (I assume still hate) that idea. It especially triggered them when I said immigrants really need to learn English to fully realize the American dream. I'm good with some level of English proficiency be a requirement for citizenship. English classes should be available for them. Children of immigrants will learn English as they grow up and attend school. Hopefully.
There is decent enough incentive to learn the English language and any kid going through school would be learning it (unless they find a school that is strictly taught in a different language - not aware of that being an option).
Not sure there's a need to force it given that the people most effected by it are the ones that can't speak English. But technology is at least getting to the point it can be used for helping translate.
English proficiency needs to be included in the citizenship test. Congress should pass a law proclaiming English is the official language of the United States. Most countries of the world have an official language, and some have more than one.
In the U.K. and France for example, it is Arabic.

What's it matter? The laws are debated, passed, and published in English. Everyone here is obligated to know what the law demands of them, no matter their English proficiency.

If you can't read and write in English you should not be a citizen much less allowed to vote. Frankly any intending immigrant should prove English sufficiency during a conversation with the consular officer. Those incompetent must attend assimilation classes organized by the government after their arrival. I'm comfortable paying for that. Foreign students who can't hold a conversation... No entry. Workers same.
How can you have a country when people cannot communicate with each other? There are many citizens in Miami unable to communicate in English.
The best thing the Soviet Union ever did was create an official language for inter ethnic communication. You could travel from Vladivostok to Moldova and communicate in the same language.
In some states you can take driver's license tests in multiple languages. It's a matter of public safety.
So what? They still have to learn what "Stop" means in English. Who cares what the text in the test is written in?
And what happens when a police officer is pulling them over and goes on their walkie device and demands they pull over and the driver does not understand the commands?
