Ed Schilling is Leaving...

What's the consensus over here on him? I've read where some of you wanted Archie to change things up with assistant coaches but is Schilling who you had in mind?

Two seasons with no NCAA tournament appearances and a staff shake-up in the middle of the summer. Things aren’t looking too good in the program. Football is in the same situation.

I heard he knows the seat and water is getting hot and decided to cut bait and run before everyone gets fired.

Uh-huh - like you heard this:

I've been waiting all afternoon to post this because I wanted to be 100% sure. I got a text this morning about it and admittedly I thought it was a rumor at first. I've been waiting to make sure its 100% before posting.
I can say with 100% confidence that Billy and his wife were in Bloomington this morning.
I don't see any scenario where he and his wife come to town and he doesn't take the job. It's happening!!!

Brian Kelly at ND had / rough years and he cleaned house and fired his OC and DC. Since then they have went 22-4

I like the shake-up...something needed to happen to improve the coaching staff.
Whether was this asst, or any other, doesn’t really matter to me.
There is now an opportunity to address a weakness...pick one.

However, I am hopeful Schilling is leaving clean, and leaving IU clean. UMass, Memphis, the Balls/UCLA, Romeo, AAU coach, etc offers lots of opportunity...I hope all is clear.

IU football is not even close to IU Basketball. Even Tom Crean won the B1G in Basketball. I highly doubt if I see IU football win the B1G the rest of my life.

Time to call Calbert
I used to watch Calbert during the pregame warmups when he was on our staff. Nearly every player came over to talk with him and it usually ended with a fist bump or the two of them smiling. You could see how the players liked him and wanted some positive words or a bit of advice 1 on 1 with him.

Calbert had the UE head coach position locked up. He answered 2 questions in a way that made it impossible for them to hire him. Those close to the program felt he wanted to listen to the home town program but he didn't really want the job.

We need a good recruiter, scouting coach and one that helps build morale in the locker room. It is hard to know how e does on scouting reports, but he would be the assistant the players could talk to. The kids he would recruit may not have seen him play, but they can quickly learn about what he did at IU. I hope being an assistant at IU is something he wants to do now that Archie is the coach.

Football seems to be doing fine. Recruiting has improved dramatically and the staff is pretty solid. Basketball is another story.

I propose we hire a coach who can improve our free shooting! Free throws in my opinion cost us enough games to not make the tournament!

Coopster
Free throw shooting definitely needs to improve, but it's going to take a lot more than that to improve our pathetic offense.

Schilling was significant in recruiting, and there have been some fails in that area.
Should we go for a recruiter or a good bench coach?
We need somebody with deep Indiana connections who is beloved in the state and is a winner. Damon Bailey or Greg Graham in my book fit the bill. I’d include Cal C too but I get the feeling that he’s moved on from being that involved in the game. Dane Fife is not leaving Michigan St and Mike Lewis was pretty recently hired by UCLA so they are out. This is a really important hire so I hope Arch gets it right.

I've been lukewarm on ES, but even less so on Ostram and Bruiser. None of them have really distinguished themselves. This is a very important opportunity that needs to happen quickly.

This could be anything and not necessarily negative. Remember, ES was promoted upon arrival as having great connections across the state of Indiana with many years of experience coaching. By now Archie and the rest of his staff have their own connections in the state. Maybe Archie is looking to add a recruiter strong in a different region. Maybe he wants specific coaching skills the program needs. It could be just as described - ES wanting more opportunities. We may never know but as long as he is leaving on good terms and did not hurt the program in any way, might as well say good luck to him and see if IU can upgrade that spot.
