I really want to believe it wasn't his decision and quinn forced this on him. But if it was it really makes my question him. I find it very hard to believe nobody else wanted this job so they settled on woodson. I want to hope it was just quinn saying you have to hire my iu guy. Because if it wasn't what was dolson thinking. This was likely never going to work. Having to hire fife and Matta was the first red flag.

I want Buckner and the old crew on Mars while Dolson makes this decision.

Here's why: these people are making me feel differently about our banners, and my childhood for that matter.

I look at them now and just feel old.

No more IU Alumni other than Hulls should be retained. Clean break. Once we have a real coach set us right, then we can honor our past players.

We certainly can't let them steer the ship any longer. We'll be in the MAC by 2028.

IMO, you answered your own concerns.
The fact that Fife and Matta were hired indicates to me that Woodson was not Dolson choice. Have you EVER seen hires like that with a new coach?
Plus the fact that Dolson credited Buckner with facilitating communication with Woodson.
I imagine the conversation going something like this
QB - You are going to hire Mike.
SD - Your the boss but I want to bring on some help for him.
The rest is sad history.

I never thought I would see the day when people recognized IU as a "Football First" School, but if We haven't reached that point We are getting close. When does Spring Practice start?
One good season won’t make IU a football school.
Basketball is IU’s name in the major sports world.

It's pretty obvious what happened. If Quinn wasn't BoT/Chairman there is no way Woody gets hired.

Look what Scott did with football. He may not get the next bball hire right, but he is our best shot. The last thing we need are all the trustees and donors getting involved again like they have for 25 years because they will screw things up.

I even question Calbert Cheaney’s presence on the bench. When the camera is on him announcers always make it sound like what a special privilege it is for these kids to be taught by this IU basketball “saint” but I wonder how effective he is. Is he just putting his time in enjoying the Bloomington cush life with the perk of watching college basketball from a great seat? He looks like an expressionless stiff, much like Woodson’s other henchmen. Where’s the enthusiasm? I bet he enjoys Woodson’s hand-rolled Cuban leaf, too.

I agree with you here Al. Something really fishy about the timing of all those hires. News started to surface that Matta was the choice and then there was this manufactured failed physical charade. Then Woodson’s name suddenly comes up. I think Buckner orchestrated this to get his guy in and they came to some kind of agreement with the other two to keep them on in the advisory role making Fife, the assistant.
When Fife tried to give input and coaching, Woodson’s ego got in the way, and he shut that down, and the two were gone quicker than you could blink. Matta had been around long enough and witnessed how good basketball operations . He could smell a shit show coming from a mile away so no wonder he bolted.

i suspect CC is not enjoying this in the least bit.

When MW was hired I think it was pretty obvious that for it to work out that it would require other people helping. I don’t believe that the IU basketball family (all the former players, assistants, etc.) are inept. IMHO, tapping into them s/b a strength of our program not a hindrance.

IMHO, the problem isn’t the abilities of a CC (a Fife, etc.), but about MW’s management of things.

CC cares about IU basketball, trust me. This sucks for him.

Sadly, I remember it being said Fife fell out of favor for mouthing his politics in the locker room. Those were some contentious times in deep blue Monroe Co and Fife was apparently spewing the wrong color.

The minute Matta bolted, it seemed his back issue miraculously healed.

Cignetti could very well make Indiana a football school. I'm 100% serious. It's a big and beautiful thing; embrace it.
Let’s hope so. I hate to think of Cignetti as a Mike Davis-like “one hit wonder”. Lasting superpowers take time to emerge. I wish Curt was younger, but if so, one of those true superpowers would more likely snarf him up.

“could” but it isn’t there yet. If he repeats it next year, I think IU should pour more money into that program. Upgrade or build a new stadium, new indoor facility, etc.
iu basketball is the sleeping giant…get the right coach and look out.

Woodson will not leave nor be fired before the end of the season. IMO that is good ... I want him standing on the sideline leaning on the scores bench and watch every minute of this circus he has built for the rest of the year and until the last minute played.

Dolson had an agreement with dusty may, they offered Woodson 4 more years on his payout at 1 mil per year, Woodson refused

The newest of the banners is approaching 40 years old. Since the early 90's they've been contenders maybe 3 or 4 years?

Might make the Big 18 tourney this year.

How could Woodson "refuse" to be fired? So long as IU is paying him per the terms of his contract I'd think they could have shown him the door. If they'd wanted Woodson out and Dusty here, it would have happened.

For them to make the Big 18 Tournament they have to place in the top 15 spots. Might be close by year's end.

You must not be paying attention, IU is pouring $ into FB. Coach, coaching staff, NIL, and stadium upgrades about to be announced. IU people know this.

Id rather them not make the B1G Tournament. Who cares about that 11vs14 game lmao. A squeaker over Minnesota and rhen a 17 pt loss to Wisconsin in quarterfinals.. Id rather they lose out before conference tournament and not make it.

Yes but not on par with the top programs. Iu is on par with top programs in basketball spending.

How’s Mattas team doing?

His team is arguably better next year talent wise. Schedule is harder. But if they don’t win 9 games and go to a Florida bowl I think the season will be a disappointment.

No duh, IUFB can’t become OSU or UM overnight and will probably never get to the top-10 in payroll spend. 10-20 maybe in a few years. But for us IU fans the improvement is exciting. Much better than following IUBB.

The assistant staff pool is now the same as Ohio State and other big programs. NIL has increased quite a bit. FB improving helps the whole IU athletic dept including basketball. But I know you’re a basketball only guy and not a fan of IU as a whole.

Dolson was told he needs to get one more year. but if he is willing to step aside on his own, you can offer him this. Dolson wanted to replace him those above him didn't

What did you take offense of, in what I said?
I did not say one negative thing about IU. I said iu is a top spender in basketball…if iu is truly going to become a football school pull from that and put toward football because even with the changes, they are still not on par with the top football schools. Calm down dude.

IU should be a football first program. It’s any athletic department’s bell cow. Basketball has relevance, but not nearly as much as 20-30 years ago. The way the game is played has changed. It’s not as popular. Football is where it’s at.

Although in his third year at Butler he doesn’t look to be getting it done. I’m sure with no D-1 football and a small private school, maybe Butler isn’t competitive in NIL. But Matta isn’t in A-10 or midwestern city or whatever league school was in during his first tenure there.

Everything in life runs its course…popularity of events, organizations, coaches, etc. Some are sustained longer than others with some cycled in shorter course of execution. It happened to Knight. It’s apparently happening to Matta (What’s the matter with Matta?) and yes, even our current coach, Mike Woodson who will be remembered as a short hitter.

To have structured matter, everything needs to be fueled and when that fuel source runs out, so does the energy needed to overcome the inherent Second Law of Thermodynamics which states that in a closed system, everything seeks a level of more disarray, more randomness of order. Think of an abandoned house over time. In time, everything will be reduced to a random state of subatomic
particles. Until that time comes, cease the moment, bull by the horns, creating a good day while you still have the energy to make it happen!
