After the game yesterday, I was exiting Gainbridge going to the Virginia parking garage. There was a bunch of black suburbans shuttling people out and blocking a few lanes of traffic. I started jogging that way to cross instead of waiting to cross at the crosswalk. After getting almost half way across, I saw President Whitten about to get into a truck. I yelled "how did you like that Mrs. President!" Mind you, still jogging in a kind of busy crossway so I break eye contact and continue to make sure I am not about to get drilled (happened before in college running to the IU Duke game). I hear her yell "hey hey hey". I instantly think, oh shit am I back in HS, and about to get scolded about running in traffic to be safe???? No, she had her hand in the air, and demanded a high five.

Pretty cool to see that passion in our president. Welcome change in my book!!!

Early reviews on her are pretty good.

I’ve heard she’s a pretty big sports fan.

She is, but she is not super supportive about academic things the university should take pride in. Don't ask me how I know cause I can't say more than that.

Well, that sucks. As much as I like sports, IU should be first and foremost about education and she/they should never quit trying to improve that aspect.

This is about all I can say, this is public info, but it goes way further ..

Interesting article and detailed account of what was asked of the search committee. Sounds like the trustees just decided on an external candidate ( which they are allowed to do). Nothing really nefarious.

It was a little bit I think, but I kind of value the last few years of my career over sharing more on a basketball forum. I am glad she likes basketball :)

Just like you KNEW the Hoops season would be shut down via COVID explosion?
I figured it would and there was a covid explosion, just not of the worst variant. I hear things that most don't know, and just try to inform as much as I can when I see it could impact people's life and the people that do know are trying to be hush-hush about it. That's what I heard then. Really, was the entire state dashboard not entirely red, for weeks after that? Was I wrong, no, was it less dramatic than what it could have been, perhaps yes, but the warning was not unwarranted.

Perhaps if you’re criteria is solely “sports friendly” but McRobbie was very well respected as a university president and got very high marks for improving academic rankings.
McRobbie definitely brought in the $$$ and built a lot of new buildings and cyber infrastructure along with administrative bloat. Not sure academic rankings were improved, it was my impression they had fallen somewhat. Did anyone ever see McRobbie at a football or basketball game?

I saw McRobbie at several football games over the years. IMO, he was a very good Pres. for IU in all regards. As for the academicians who are unhappy with the choice of Whitten, a fair number of those folks have massive egos and thin skins. Nobody is going to make them all happy. Time will tell how her tenure turns out, but as with Coach Woodson, a rush to negative judgment is in the DNA of several posters on this site.

Did Myles Brand even know where the basketball team played on campus? Maybe he assumed the Mellencamp Pavilion, knowing how much John liked IU basketball.

It's not among the better academic B10 institutions anymore, more pretty. But for a couple things that you know, whatever, I would say this is not somebody trying to sale what's salable, and that is bad

When I saw tenured professor I immediately thought ego.

Yes, saw McRobbie at several women games, so assume he was at some men’s also.

You mean tenured like professor of basketball, Lou Watson, having his coaching position terminated at age 47 to become "special assistant to the athletic director" for the next 16 years? What was he meant to do that was so "special" on the harder working taxpayer's dime, water Bill Owing's desktop philodendron every Friday morning? It sounds like the "good 'ole boy system" remains intact.

One of the classic lines I overheard in youth that has stayed with me all these years, "It's not just who you know, but who you blow!. Stop and think about it, it's deeper than you might think. ~ Linda "C_m-face" Lovelace

The old upside down pyramid. All the closet gods held up by the workers.

This is actually the best report I’ve seen on Whitten.

Her Kennesaw State connections are now becoming more relevant.

Myles Brand was in attendance at Rupp arena when IU beat Duke in the 2002 Sweet 16.

I’m on staff at IU and I personally know of one person who left IU because of her hire and there have been several others. Perhaps she’ll do just fine, but there are quite of few upset over the way she was chosen.

That may be true, but not a reflection on her!
The students, student organizations & IU Foundation, along with many others are extremely pleased with her hiring.

I’ve seen what the staff at IU does. They know better sometimes. 😉

I know a former Dean, and got the skinny on this. IU is just so holier than thou in everything they do. Not good enough for IU was the the basic jist. She wasn't on the list of choices. People got upset there opinions didn't matter.

I like her!!!

There is always some turnover with a new CEO and her own staff coming in. Most feedback I have gotten is positive although some of that is from the marketing and fund-raising areas which we expect to be positive.

That’s okay though. Just keep our B-School one of the best and improve the sports teams. No one mistakes IU for an elite academic institution.

I was shocked they didn't pick Robel. Just seemed like the IU way of doing things. Hire from within and be able to virtue signal at the same time.

Sometimes it’s best you don’t post your opinions. They’re often pretty wildly off and that was one of them.

No hire ever gets 100 percent approval. There’re always people that think it’s undeserved and that this person or that person should have been hired/promoted instead. Of course they don’t all agree on that person either. These people don’t read the résumés or participate in the interviews, but they just know the wrong decision was made. It’s just the way it is and I pay little attention to it. The person either proves his or herself or they don’t. That is also the way it is.

IU’s President seems to be doing well to me too.
