Coach Was Right

I remember when a lot of people on here complained about Sudfeld that year. Diamont was going to be better haha.

I compared him at the time to Yogi Ferrell. People didn’t truly appreciate him until he was gone.
Was Sudfeld a 4 or 5 year guy? Looking back, I wish he could have red shirted in 2012.

Typically? They might run it 2 or 3 times a game, tops. And no one said IU running it was bad, only that it skewed last nights rushing statistics.

WRONG. Paul Chryst runs an ACE offense with a lot of Fly Motion. They will fake or handoff the jet sweep on their dives, off-tackle sweeps, and traps.

I was at the game
Then you saw first hand that they didn’t run it all that well between the tackles. Not bad, but not a great night for the O line. Nothing wrong with the jet sweep, was just making the point that those 5 carries counted for an inordinate amount of the overall rush total.

That's not unusual. Many good rushing game stats are padded by a handful of big gainers.

I don’t know if you have ever called plays in a game but teams try to take away what they perceive is your strength. So instead of running at the strength bog the defense you attack the weakness.

I've been very critical of the D since the game. I still am but after re-watching parts of the game, I don't think I noticed the wholesale substitutions that Hagan and Allen were using all during the game. They never had a chance for consistency. I now get a sense Allen was testing them. Finding out who is ready to play in the B10 and who need to redshirt. I take back some of my criticism as there was strategy being used there. Smart strategy. The kind Im not used to at IU. We are deep. As sloppy as it was on D, if we can run that many guys through and NOT get any worse than what we saw, oh man...a nice surprise could be waiting for us.

Oh yeah...if 213 yds per game is pedestrian I will take it...that's 2769 yds over 13 games...booya!!
I agree with your post. We really aren’t used to a coach who can utilize a strategy like that. We usually have to play first team from start to finish every game. Maybe we are in for a surprise. Next week we’ll learn much more. At least I hope so. Go Hoosiers!

Figured you had more of an appreciation for the nuances and details of the game since you said you used to coach.
Sill don’t know what you are talking about. Having coached offensive lines for 30 years I tend to focus on o-line play. Also having played for Coach DeBord I know he learned play calling from one of the best play callers ever in Red Faught. Run a play until the stop it.

4 year. I really don’t think it would’ve mattered. He probably would’ve left for the NFL regardless. He’s a rare QB for a program like IU. Hopefully Penix can have the same or better success over his career.

That they were not very proficient running it between the tackles. Would’ve thought that was well understood by anyone who watched the game, though.
150 yards between the tackles is pretty good. As I stated before people try to take away what they believe is your strength. They tried to take away our downhill running game and we crossed them up by running the jet sweeps also the passes in to the flat although not counted in run stats are part of run game now days. Also Stevie Scott missed opportunities to cut the ballots back and perhaps gain even more yardage. Yes it was not a perfect game but I will take 213 yards rushing and 525 yards and 38 points and I don’t care who you play. The other thing is that most teams make their biggest improvements between games 1 and 2.

I have to chuckle reading some of these posts. Somebody said “we have 5 good WRs and then not much after that.” I paraphrased that a bit but that was essentially the essence of it.
Do people not understand that this is the same case for pretty much every team? They have 4-5 guys that play the bulk of the snaps and 2 of those guys will be the main weapons. After those 5 guys, pretty much it’s guys that don’t get to play or are pure backups. So, in a sense, with exception of the really elite teams, everybody is going to be thin at WR.

I wasn’t trying to be critical or complain about it, just trying give context for why Allen said WR was the thinnest position in the team

Well, he trashed this thread rather quickly.
Danc and I go way back and aren't exactly friends...vbg...but you just said his posts are trash.

Judge and jury aren't you? You go all over this site just bashing people. You add nothing with such comments.

I guess trash is something you know well. Takes one to know one. Why don't you just post FB comments and leave people to their opinions. Believe me...they are every bit as good as yours.

Wow...what is the burr under your saddle? People are going to disagree...that doesn't make them stupid or trash. Grow up...

I think he was referring to Larry/Ord, not DanC. Larry trashing a thread is a regular occurance. He would argue with Vince Lombardi about who has the most football knowledge. PalmBeach will soon learn the ignore feature was made for Larry's multiple obnoxious, condescending personalities.

I didn’t trash any thread because I was trying to have a conversation about the running game. There are some posters here who definitely have some “interesting” agendas, that’s for sure.

Same old song. The offense will have to score at least 40 points a game for IU to have a chance to win. No defense as usual. I just can't understand how this situation can persist year after year. Yes, it's going to be a long season.
IU has solid defense the last two years. Biggest turnaround on defense in the nation two years ago. Did you miss the last two seasons?

The defense has definitely improved but at the same time we haven’t set the world on fire. We had the 9th best Big Ten D in 2016 and 10th best last year. Not last, but not even top half of the conference. Still a lot of progress to be made.

The plan was to red shirt Sudfeld, but Tre Robertson - I believe it was Tre - got hurt and there was little to no choice but to play Suds. IU never looked back, except when Suds himself got hurt and the cupboard was pretty darned bare by then.
I was thinking Cam Coffman took most of the snaps after Tre got hurt. Did he get hurt too? I can't remember.

He can’t
It was about a dearth of explosion plays from the run game, something we’re probably going to need. I’ll let you know when there’s another thread about Purdue and Northwestern s football facilities, which is much more your speed.

You are always going to have explosive plays in the inside run game it is not that easy. Stevie Scott is not Jordan Howard, Tevin Coleman or even Divne Redding yet. It was his first game. I believe you would have seen some had Cole Gest not gone out of the game. I believe once Scott learns to be patient and looks for cutback they will come. He seems to run to contact instead away from it. But hey 70 yards is not bad for first college game.

Defensively, I am extremely disappointed in Jacob Robinson. Hes a Senior. And one of the most experienced DTs in CFB. A Captain. And he had 1 tkl. For comparison, Jerome Johnson had 4 tkls, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble. Start Johnson please.

At first I agreed with your analysis, but after watching the recorded game, he was held so often his shirt was stretched to the point it did not come close to fitting. I don't think this will happen again.

Holding by FIU was amazing...I mean it was evey play and blatant at that...vbg. That was true homer stuff. He wasn't the only one held to be sure.

It's about how I thought it would go. Offensive improvement from last year with so many returnees, and the opposite for the defense. Everyone could hope that guys could step in and take the place of all of the starters we lost last year, but that just is not the reality. They were starters over these guys for a reason.

Rare? Since '79, we've had Clifford, Laufenberg, Bradley, Schnell, Green, ARE, Lewis & Chappell. I would have taken all of those guys, other than Green (as a college QB) and Chappell over Nate.
