Cignetti and recruiting question

Will Cignetti stick to his approach of "production over stars", or succumb to chasing stars with his newly found war chest?

I think it's an interesting question...thoughts?
I still think he'll preference production over potential when it comes to filling immediate/starting needs, but I do think you'll start to see the staff target younger guys with some potential who can add depth and develop. Still need to acquire talent to consistently win in this league. That, and I don't think retooling your roster every year is a sustainable method. Cig played it smart this year to build momentum out of the gate, but I don't think we're going to be able to replace 15,16 starters a year and keep the status quo.

He'll probably end up getting higher ranked players but it won't have anything to do with the number of stars following their name.

Yes, I think it’s a great strategy, however I think to build an O-line he’s gonna need to do it through getting top high school recruits. The portal is likely not going to produce too many top lineman and if he gets a top performer from a small school it’s not an indicator of how he’d preform against top B1G linemen, since theirs likely a physical difference. On the other hand, good small school skill position players translate better and can perform well on a bigger stage.

Some info from last year:

His success at NCState and Alabama at recruiting high-level talent is great. Just need to be able to close for IU instead of Alabama. Be nice if he could get a line into TX and CA.

A mix of both approaches. He will do what he feels will give IU the best chance of winning. He is pragmatic.
This is the answer.

You NEED your Kamara’s & Greg Middleton level DL stars for example. But they don’t grow on trees.

You can supplement a stud with effort guys. Like, Wes Kramer gave us good snaps. He’d have shined a lot better with a star playing next to him absorbing the heat.

Regardless of whether a recruit has all of the measureables, they’ve got to have high effort. That can mask a lot and with enough effort, someone with the talent to get recruited at this level will find their spot, whatever it ends up being

And especially have those 15-16 already know the system.
