They don't lack for talent and have both the recruiting pedigree and past performance to prove it,
and Allen has proven here and elsewhere that he knows how to call a defense and have an effective secondary. But they've not just been beat more than you'd expect this year, they've been straight-up burned, and repeatedly. And what makes it more confusing is the issue isn't confined to just one or two of them.
Mullen has been beat badly two or three times already for touchdowns, including tonight despite holding.
All the safeties have frankly been generally poor overall in coverage in addition to giving up their fair share of chunk plays. And then tonight, we had a freshman get beat easily on the TD that effectively decided the game. Jaylin Williams is probably the only DB that hasn't made any super glaring mistakes so far.
I really struggle to understand what has gone wrong on the backend, especially since the front seven has probably been better overall than in years past and you'd think that would help with coverage.
Has anyone seen anything glaring in technique or play calling that is causing these issues?
