My grandma would get Govt cheese in those days, she didnt need assistance by any means but was dirt poor as a kid in the depression , worked on election boards for the Democrats but would be appalled by Dems of today. She always had loaves of Govt cheese she would slice outside off to get to the still good part. Fed it to her herd of outside cats.
