Beer Thread

Ten Ninety opening their new tap room in Glenview, Illinois soon. To those who don't know JHoban19 from the premie is one of the owners. I've met him once for beers, and he sent me my first Pliny. Brian Schafer, another owner, was in my fraternity at IU and was in my pledge class. Their beer is good and the facility looks awesome. When and which beer nerd OTFers will be up for a road trip to the Chicago burbs?

I'm fairly beer geeky, but I'm not sure any bomber of anything is worth $18. On a per ounce basis that translates to $59 a six pack. I've never had a beer that special or unique that it was worth such a price, even if someone else is paying. Heck, even regular priced bombers (~$10) are a ripoff when you do the math. Sucker packaging (bombers, 4-packs) is really limiting what I'll drink anymore. I love beer, but dammit it's just beer.

I realize this won't be a popular sentiment here.
They sell this beer in the pub for $13 / bomber, so the $18 is that liquor store bending over its' local patrons. Not that I think $13 for 22 ounces isn't expensive, because it is. I think if you went to 18th and bought a glass of it there, they would charge you $6 for what I think is about 12 ounces of beer in a snifter type glass. 18th Street is among the more pricey breweries out there, most definitely.

But Deal with the Devil (and not to be confused with Anchorage Brewings "A Deal with the Devil") is damn good.

What's a guy to do?

Yeah. I'm not nearly as price sensitive in a pub or restaurant as I am in a bottle shop. If I'm in a pub like Dash In then I'm choosing the beer I want to drink, whatever it costs so long as it's not outrageous in comparison to other offerings on the board. One can disassociate the price in a restaurant since you're paying for more than just the beer or wine or food when you go out.

There's a new beer bar in da Region called Brewfest, and its a place where you pour your own beers, based on a debit account that you create when you first check in. Beers are priced on a per ounce basis, so the more you pour, the more you pay, and the individual screen for each beer shows what the per ounce charge is for that beer, along with the ABV etc.

So, last night at bowling SuperHoosier tells me early in the night that he was going to swing by there after bowling because they had tapped KBS. As I'm leaving the bowling center, he tells me it's already gone. So, I know the owner, and heard today that there was nowhere to park, and nowhere to sit. He also said that he priced KBS at $1.10 per ounce. Most beers there are priced between $0.30 and $0.40 per ounce. The highest priced beer I've seen there since they've opened was a framboise at (I think) somewhere in the $0.70 per ounce range. But, he tells me that people were pouring full pint glasses of KBS. That equates to about $17.00 per glass or thereabouts.

To me, this is sheer madness. Its evidently an uneducated boob who doesn't know, or respect, the beer that they are consuming, and only knows that they've heard of the elusive KBS, are first in line for KBS, and they're going to get their belly full of it. That much KBS equates to over 3 standard drinks, which (I'm guessing) that aforesaid boob drank in 15 minutes. Or less. Do that once, and you're halfway to a DUI; do it twice, and you're there. Stoopid.

That much KBS should be enjoyed in a snifter glass, and over an hour or so.

We're getting a place like that soon in the Heights. Sounds a bit gimmicky, but if they have a good selection and keep their tap lines clean and are well-organized it could be a pretty cool concept. I know the guy who is one of the owners a little bit. He seems to know what he's doing. I don't think I plan on slamming any KBS pints though.

Surly would drive you CRAZY, Hank. They are the kings of the $18-$23 bomber.

And I buy 'em all. I agree, it's just beer - but it's also just money. :D

If I drank 2 pints of KBS in less than an hour, I'd sleep for a week. That's ridonkulous.

There's a place like that in St. Louis. I went with 3 guys. They got PLASTERED drinking Bud Light and Mich Ultra. I had 3 pints of ..... Rogue 7 Hop (I believe) in 3 hours. I was the designated driver. Next trip I made to St. Louis, they wanted to go back. Um, no. We went to the Schlafly tap room and I educated them on the idea of drinking good beer without getting jackhammered. A good time was had by all.

Flockin' amateurs.

I love the Schlafley taproom. Good food and the beer is always solid, if unspectacular. Tasmanian IPA at the source though? Tough to beat. I need to get to Urban Chestnut and Side Project though. I've been to Perrenial and 4 Hands but it's been a while.

There was a Founders Tap takeover here in the 'ville last week, and they had both '15 and '16 versions on tap. I had a snifter of both over an hour or so, and I was good to go (plus the Backwoods Bastard and PAM Project the rest of the night). Luckily my wife drove.

I'm up in Chi-town next month Ptown -- I'm up for a few few Chicago-land brews

I'm not sure if I'll get up there in May or not. Hope so but between kids soccer games, birthdays and my anniversary May is pretty full. I could end up going up for a Cubs game or two though. If I'm there when you are I'd be up for meeting up for a couple beverages.

I am SOOOOOOOOOO up for hanging out with you guys at Hoban's place. Let me know a time and I'll be there.

Actually it's June when I'll be up there -- twice as a matter of fact. I'll be up there for a conference the 23rd and 24th I think.

Interesting. I've been to several wine places with that setup, including Tastings here in Indy. But have not seen it with beer before.

Funny that we talk about outrageous bomber prices, even though every large shop has aisles full of $50+ bottles of wine. And then the high priced temp controlled chamber where bottles start at $100. It's just wine, right?

Ranger says "Hi!!!" To the AOTF Beer Thread. And he wants you to drink this beer, which is traveshamockery good.

Friday starts craft beer week in Madison. Guessing this would be right up your guys' alley. From the big 100+ tap places down to the local hole in the walls, it seems as if a brewery has something set up at a place. Some are brewing beers just for that bar.

My local favorite place to catch a meal and a beer is having a Surly takeover. They have about 20+ taps. Curious to see what they have. Any @ovaltine suggestions (besides the usual)?

If they have Todd The Axe Man, drink it until you can't feel your toes.

I'm at the Minnesota Craft Beer Expo in Minneapolis with Mrs. O. She just said Deschutes Fresh Squeezed tasted like Beck's. The due that poured for her wanted to punch me. Meanwhile, I'm drinking Jester King stuff until it comes out my ears. They are truly extraordinary. Drink well, AOTFers.

Haha... the fresh squeezed is good, imo. I get your world... my gf asks for summer shandy at every place we go and compares beers to it accordingly... haha.

The asian joint in my building has todd the ax man. it's good. looking for something a little more exotic when I hit the surly place.

Article sucks, but I couldn't find a better one. That place they mention in the article - - tex tubbs--is one of my favorite comfort food places. The owners are from Austin and styled it like an Austin Mexican place.
I did not see anything in particular but if they have Surly stouts (Darkness) or sours (Pentagram) those are good bets if you like those styles at all. Anything from Toppling Goliath as well.

Yea... i was looking for something better. Guess they just promote it locally, because they have these nicely produced 60 page booklets at every bar they are giving out.

I'll look for Toppling Goliath, but the worst thing about Wisconsin is how provincial they are about their beers. They have all the big boys listed (lauganitas, 3 Floyd's, surly, bells, founders, etc...) but some of the smaller ones are probably crowded out by WI breweries.

I don't know how close you are to Verona but the Verona wine cellars was a really cool little place. I believe it was the owner I spoke to who hooked me up with a lot of advice on good local Brews, and he sold me some toppling Goliath and has a pretty good selection of Thee Floyds as well.

@PhishPhan682 - I was looking for you this afternoon - beauty of a day, live music, and really good beer under tall oak trees. They are your peeps, for sure.

I went to Dark Horse yesterday for the annual spring smoke off. Had some good and some really bad BBQ. Smells like a Safety Meeting when fresh is good. Much of what they make isn't . I did pick up some Bourbon Barrel Maple Syrup that Darkhorse makes which was good chit.

It is only my list to get to Double Thai.P.A day this year.

I just had Dark Horse's Too Cream Stout. It was phenomenal.

You know, I've had a few bottles of Fresh Squeezed that were sub-par, and I think it's a great beer. I've theorized the fresher the better for this beer, but don't know.

O. You do well with the brews. Tweak is a boozy yet delicious bomb. But even you are't allowed to post Buckcherry in my thread. This is not a titty club.

That line about Buckcherry truly made me LOL. Mrs. O actually shushed me ('cause she's watching TV).

Tweak whipped my ass. Hard. It's no excuse for posting that tune, but it's all I got.

BTW, I'm laying down and typing this. Between the horizontality of my position and my ass getting whipped by Tweak, typing this post is like being asked to type the Magna Carta.

In Latin.

When people ask me why I like beer vs. booze, I always reply that, 1) I like the taste, and 2) I can measure my intake easier, and I can drink two of any beer and be fine.

That last statement isn't true with Tweak. That's a tank of a beer.

BTW, secured the popcorn thingie. Will be on its way today or tomorrow, plus another thing or two.

You're the Man, O. I really thought the guy was kidding when he said he wanted to try the Mankato popcorn beer, but he was not. Much appreciated. I'll be on the lookout for stuff to send you way sometime in the near future, hopefully.

I had a long discussion with a brewer at a newer brew pub near me.

Without a doubt, the biggest impediment for newer, and smaller scale brewers, is hops. Unless you are big enough to contract out your hops from a specific producer...which most brewpubs aren't....you can't make consistent beer.

This place has gone to making their house IPA with a rotating hop combo for every batch. Same malt bill and IBU target, but different hops every batch.

Likely a reason you are never blown away with hop bombs from newer breweries and you often leave with a "meh" feeling.
