Athlon B1G Predictions are a joke

We have two new coordinators, four new coaches, and tons of new faces in our two deeps on both sides of the ball. Offensively, we’ve torn it down to the studs for the most part and rebuilt it with talent that’s probably decent but not difference making. You’re right, one quarter might not be enough. On the other hand and very much in hindsight, it only took five minutes last Fall in the first game against Iowa to see that we weren’t nearly the team Coach Allen, the players and many fans thought we were going to be, either.
We do have players that will be difference making in games - look at the power and speed Shivers has, DJ Matthews [if he is healthy], Lucas is very fast and good so he may play this year, we brought in very good WRs Camper etc , Lucas has shown he is fast and shifty, Barner has speed for a TE and very good hands. Shiver has experience against SEC defenses and ran over Alabama's defensive players.

Hope you’re right, but none of those players have shown difference making ability. Maybe the fresh start will do Shivers some good, but he averaged one carry a game for AU last year, and he’s small. Hope he gets 10-15 touches a game.

IN ONE QUARTER!!!

We might have two possessions in that quarter.

Everyone always talks about the biggest improvement in a season being between games 1 and 2.

ONE FRICKING QUARTER!!!!

No wonder we have the dumbest fan base in the B1G when it comes to football.
Let's judge the team by how long it takes the announcer to yell,
"First down, HO-O-O-SIERS!" If its third quarter, there will be very few there to hear it.

It’s not necessarily the personnel I worry about. I think you can win with this group, at least ,500 is really what should be the floor..
It’s the coaching I worry about. Do they have the ability to lead the group?

At least one reporter thinks it can’t be as bad as last year.
(But doesn’t go out on a limb to predict a even a .500 record).

”Part of that is the fact it’s quite difficult for the Hoosiers to get worse this season — IU was 123rd in scoring offense on top of being 109th on defense. …

Those items are related. Indiana was 128th in the country with a minus-13 turnover margin. The Hoosiers had 22 giveaways and just 9 takeaways. In an 8-game 2020 season, Indiana was 13th nationally with 20 takeaways. In 2022, the reality will be somewhere between those extremes.

A better offense will also help the defense.
Indiana was 69th in total defense last year, but 109th in scoring because it was so often put in an impossible spot. Expect the scoring defense and total defense ranks to be more closely aligned this season.”

“Because to get worse, the Hoosiers would need to build a sub-basement to Memorial Stadium. …

Injuries forced Indiana to play 4 quarterbacks last season, and the results were predictable. Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak will bring stability to the position as long as trips to the training room don’t become an annual tradition. …

Even if Indiana improves by a touchdown per game, it will likely rank somewhere in the 90s nationally. But that still counts as significant improvement over what we witnessed last year.”

IU has leverage in several areas. Research, global ties, funding, large affluent alumni base, elite academic offerings and Hoops prominence among others.
The academic factor isn’t that big of a deal anymore. There are all sorts of new alignments that have nothing to do with academics nor geography. We’re getting further away from the academic side of it, not closer to it.

You are not wrong in the global sense but BIG will be very very slow to give up their charter as a research-based organization/alliance. Some university might leave but none are going to be booted.

There’s no interest on IU’s part to leave the BiG. It’s not now nor has it ever been under consideration. The BiG ten has a similar view. We’re a member in good standing and we’ll remain so. But we have little leverage here to flex what muscles we have be they academic or athletic. In the conference hierarchy, we’re mid-pack at the very, very most in either category, as we are in any other relevant peripheral issues.

We aren’t going anywhere.

Hundreds of millions in research grants makes it quite a big deal. We are part of the strongest academic organization in existence.

Twenty-three non losing seasons of football over the last 80 years can kinda skew the forecasters a little. Sad to say, the writers have been downers on IU football for good reason. It has been too safe of a bet just to predict a losing season. Here is hoping CTA can get that trend corrected. He at least has given us some much needed hope.
Go Hoosiers!
82
And only 5 seasons of 6 wins or more (3 where IU actually finished with a winning record) since Mallory was fired back in 1996 doesn't help either.
