Argentina elects "far-right" libertarian--will they turn it around?

Things like this are why I’m just not all that moved by charges that Pete Hegseth is unqualified to lead the DoD.

Look at what the people who are (supposedly) qualified to lead it have done. It’s (no pun intended) indefensible.
Co-sign. The gov lifers. Biden 50 years. Harris her entire working. On and on Don’t care. They play with Monopoly money. Never worry about payroll. Bottom lines. Etc. Just tax the people. Terrible stewards of our money

Covid money boondoggle. And Medicare fraud. That pls interest on debt is basically that entire $900b

I mean paying $659B in interest sucks.... But it's not really optional.

No, interest payments aren't optional. But virtually every other line item in federal outlays is.

35+% inflation, but down from 250%. Also rising poverty levels. But hey, long term they may be OK.

Like I said, go in with the intent to burn it all down and let the pols bust their asses to save what's really important to them. We elect representatives for a reason. Make them earn their money. If the end result is even a 10-15% reduction, it's better than nothing.
Cutting 10% would be a miracle. We balanced the budget in the 90s by basically just not increasing the budget - much.

A 10% cut now would not only help the deficit today, but would drastically slow an increase in the years to come.

This week's Economist:

Javier Milei: “My contempt for the state is infinite”

Argentina’s president is idolised by the Trumpian right. They should get to know him better

Be still my beating heart. Milei feels no compunction to put on airs like he’s “in the club”, even when those in the club are going out of their way to show him they’re in it and he’s not.

They despise him, and he despises them right back.

Dude needs a tailor. That pant length is ridiculous. A slight break, Javier. Slight. Not a big bunch around the ankles.

*sigh*

Exactly. The pendulum is going to swing the other way. No more euro trash skinny high waters. Going back to suits from when times were good and people could afford fine fabric, and lots of it.
Classic style never calls for that kind of pant leg. NEVER.

Next thing you know, dude will be wearing a shawl collar with the bottom button buttoned.

It's incredible we still have socialists in 2024 and governments spending more than they take from their citizens.

December 2024 annualized growth rate of 5.5%…which is particularly remarkable given the amount of disinflation they’ve experienced.

My guy is killing it so far.

Keeping in mind, his first notable action was to fire thousands of useless parasites from government payrolls and demand fiscal reform and accountability.
I loved the recent viral video of Elon presenting Milei with a chromed up chain saw, which Milei absolutely loved.

The symbolism is epic.

It was the other way around. That's why people were melting down over all those poor gov employees losing their jobs while mean old Elon mocked them with a chainsaw.

Honestly amazed he's not dead.

I'm sure that he has no shortage of mortal enemies. Some people's devotions are to the state moreso than the nation and don't have the slightest bit of interest in seeing it pared, whether that enhances their citizens' well-being or not. As far as they're concerned, people's well-being is synonymous with the strength and scope of the state.

My understanding is that he got involved in something he just didn't understand....and that's how it played out. I don't think it's something that he personally profited from.

But I'm sure we'll learn more as time goes on.

I hadn't checked in on this since the story broke a week or two ago. According to what I read, Milei agreed to promote a crypto offering made by an American firm called Kelsier Ventures on his social media accounts. Milei promoted the coin as a means of providing economic stimulus for Argentinian small businesses. How that was supposed to work, I don't know. Naturally, the price spiked following his promotion -- from $0.000001 to a high of $5.20 before quickly falling back to $0.99.

Well, some 70% of the coins were held by 9 founding accounts -- which, apparently, can serve as a means of doing a "rug pull" on those who dive in upon its release. New investors drive the price up, only to have the "rug pullers" holding the bulk of the coins to dump them and reap big profits. The 9 founding accounts profited some $87 million on the backs of 44,000 investors who dove in. Milei abruptly rescinded his endorsement while this volatile pricing action was going on.

It looks more to me like he got suckered, and was used to sucker others, than that he was doing this to sucker anybody. Bad judgment, alas.

Considering that he is an epic, existential threat to Communism or Fascism or bullshitism (which ever they were doing, or some other ism), yes him still breathing is remarkable. At least those same people in the USA actually tried to kill Trump several times, to maintain their coup! We have to at least give them credit for misfiring and even SUCKING at that.

Argentina's politics were long dominated by what was termed Peronism (named for Juan Peron, of course) and later altered as "Kirchnerism." It was never communist. It was more of a social democracy type of government. Think Bernie Sanders moreso than Hugo Chavez.

Anyway, it was once one of the wealthiest countries in the Western hemisphere. But they spent themselves into a lot of debt, which became increasingly distressed and supported by the IMF -- using currency manipulation tactics and MMT wizardry to try to keep the plates spinning, which resulted in prolonged and spiraling inflation.

It's a tale as old as time.

That's not all that complicated a scheme. It would be bizarre for someone like him to get suckered by that.
