Argentina elects "far-right" libertarian--will they turn it around?

A century ago, Argentina had a top 10 economy in the world and was looked at as a next potential superpower. Now they default regularly.

They need some libertarian spark. So does the U.S. for that matter.
That was kind of a special circumstance then. But yeah, their run away inflation has been killing the country for decades.

Not surprised. Those pork chops command attention. He looks like an Argentine evil kneviel
OHHHHH have you heard this guy Murt? I'll give you and excerpt. He is your dream boy man especially with the tude you carry lately towards the left. This board will melt after they hear this. Ready, Set, Go

The new President of Argentina, Javier Milei, in his own words:

-he considers Pope Francis a “filthy leftist”

-he says that "redistributing wealth is a violent act”

-he has called climate change a “lie of socialism”

-his governing philosophy is that “you can’t give shit leftists an inch

-he pledges to end the Central Bank of Argentina

-his view on China is that he “doesn’t cut deals with Communists”

-his views on abortion is: “When you construct on the basis of an incorrect moral principle, the result is filth. How can being able to kill other human beings be a right gained? As a liberal, I believe in the unrestricted right to life based on the defence of life, liberty and property. I defend life, biology says that life begins with conception” @zeke4ahs

-on other politicians: “Micky Mouse is the aspiration of every Argentine politician because he is a disgusting rodent whom everybody loves”

In other words, this guy is absolutely a dream come true.

Can I move to Argentina?

I’m in love.

Meet Argentina's new president Javier Milei.

When he was growing up, kids called him "The Madman" because of his energetic outbursts.

At the age of 18, Milei, who was a soccer player, gave up the sport to pursue a career in economics.

Milei started getting famous for debates on live television where he would hurl insults at his rivals along with his "Madman" energy. After a 2018 incident where Milei called a journalist "a donkey," a local court ordered a psychological exam after he refused to apologize for "gender violence."

Milei hates wokeism, hates socialism, hates the media, hates excessive government spending, hates the political elite…... and loves his country.

The love of his life probably just married someone else

I love the "far right" moniker. I'm sure that if the far right were in charge of Argentina, he'd be lambasting them too. It's about dismantling gov control for him, regardless of who's in charge.

If nothing else, the guy is entertaining. I read somewhere in the last few weeks that the decision was between someone they knew would burn it to the ground and someone who would probably burn it to the ground.

Is he far right or far far far right? Milei is an Austrian economist who believes in sound money (and Bitcoin). If he is able to implement his polices Argentina will thrive. El Salvador just showed what can be accomplished if you have competent people in charge.
It’s coming. On vanderpump rules when Raquel gave James the engagement ring back he goes “thanks. That’s a bitcoin.” People know.

I just want the reckoning to come now

It depends on what your definition of far right is. He probably is far right in the sense of a true spectrum where total government control is on the left side and a complete lack of government is on the right side. If we're talking about the dumb way we've been conditioned to think of left vs right, then no he isn't.

We’re on the same page. I was being cheeky. I haven’t read any of his policies that are “far-right”.

I'll cover your airfare.
Thats what Joey Mannarino said. Can't you read?

My place is here fighting...As Javier said it...shit leftists

You know the ones that have burned half this country down with its awesome policies and woke, green agenda's.

Tell you what why don't we buy you lefties an island where you all can all live and sh!t in the streets together, do drugs, and celebrate against nature while enjoying sex changes and mutilate unborn children. Sounds like your utopia.

A long-time friend retired as Global co-VP International Development for Emerging Economies for one of the former 'Big 7' International accounting Corps. Multiple trips to China and Brazil..
Liked the Brazilians, thought the Argentinians, Spanish and Italian descendents, exhibited the worst characteristics of both cultures

People who’s main objective is to tear things down with no plan of how to improve or rebuild are unserious people. They are just bomb throwers.
Argentine inflation is in triple digits and their net reserves are negative to the tune of over $10B in USD with almost 3B in payments to the IMF due in Dec & Jan.

He has a plan. The question is, will it work? He wants to replace the peso with the US dollar, shut down the central bank, and make huge budget cuts. Sounds like he's already made enemies of all the socialist/communist China-aligned countries in S America.

I wonder if an Argentinian politician could win solely on a platform of bringing Messi home to play there?

It's no secret that China and Russia are trying to exert more influence in South America. This is a golden opportunity, with a pro-American leader taking charge of the 2nd largest economy in S.A. to build stronger economic and diplomatic ties and maintain influence over the region.

Can this administration look past petty politics to do what needs to be done in embracing this administration? Lula is ambivalent towards us at best and flat out hostile at worst. Chile and Colombia both elected socialist presidents recently and seem to be drifting.

I'm on board with the U.S. trying to make ties to South American nations, starting with Argentina.

A lot of people rightfully view the U.S. suspiciously, though, after our Chilean involvement.

He looks and sounds like a bomb thrower, for sure.

But his theory must be that Argentina needs free markets to thrive. Given the list of those ministries, it doesn't sound like a bad idea to throw a lot of them out.

His only hope is that he scores some major immediate successes that improve people’s lives and subverts part of the ruling class to his cause.

What about his dehumanizing rhetoric?

A long shot, but I hope it works.

I assume Milei has studied what happend in Chile with the Chicago Boys. Not sure if he can or wants to do the same (Pinochet had to implement many of those reforms at gunpoint) and who knows if Argentinian economists even think Chile was a success. I know there's academic debate about it.

pretty wild how much his positions echo desantis/trump etc. he wants to dump the depts of education and health, shrink the size of the gov, all in on culture wars, etc.

He's got the people on his side, but not many politicians. I'd say it's a long shot he succeeds without going the way of the helicopter ride.

Not a fan.

He calls the left (his leftists are different than our leftists) "shit," "trash," "leftards." If someone did that here, I wouldn't vote for them because I think that's outside our cultural norm. Even within his, he's clearly using a politics of tribalization, that I find distasteful.

But I'm not sure I'd equate those words with calling someone inhuman or vermin (like Trump just did) or cockroaches, etc. The second especially has a call back and has been used not only in Germany, but Rwanda and Armenia as well.

His goals:
1. Free Markets
2. Limited Government
3. Individual Liberty
4. Property Rights

Nothing earth shattering for most people living in the U.S. , outside of the Northeast and West Coast. But extremely ambitious for Argentina.

I think he will fail to achieve the goals he has set, but I don’t think he will be forgotten

He's also strongly anti-abortion. Not sure if that's a policy goal or even a firmly held belief as a libertarian. Might just be a political position that a lot of the Argentinians support.

im calling it like i see it. Trump said "live like vermin"

Cmon Brad don't sink to bowl, hick, zeke levels. Those are exactly what melei describes when he goes off. Those types can gtfo. They defend these blue cities. You know like how you have to drive away from your area to get gas because there's a good chance of shit happening. Like the Chicago firefighter who lives down the street from me and commutes coz it wasn't safe for his daughter in the burbs of chicago. People defending that shit can gtfo. They do not need to live or be voting in this country. I never thought there would be areas in major downtown nice spots that have become unsafe. Who wants that? The people on this board who stupidly defend that need to go. Like now!
