This is a good first step, IMO.

If a parent knows their kid is mental decline and doesn't do the necessary steps to keep them and everyone around them safe, then in my opinion, they should be charged and held accountable.

I agree.

What is the second step in your view?

IMO mankind has a great deal to learn on the subject of mental health. Studies on how our brain functions, for example, is in its early stages.

To date it is theorized some mental illnesses are inherited and shared by members of some families. So who to say the mother in this case isn't a victim of inherited mental health problems.

Also there is the difficulty of finding competent mental health practioners in a field which is controversial and non existent in many communities.

IMO a hundred years from now the science of mental health which exists today will be viewed as having been in the dark ages. Also the laws on how we treat mental illness will change as we learn more about causes and cures.

The case in this thread someday very well might be an example of how little we knew about mental health.

According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, there is substantial evidence of a statistical association between cannabis use and the development of schizophrenia or other chronic psychoses, with the highest risk potentially among the most frequent users.[2] A possible connection between psychosis and cannabis is controversial because observational studies suggest a correlation but do not establish any causative effect of cannabis on long-term psychiatric health.[26] Medical evidence strongly suggests that the long-term use of cannabis by people who begin use at an early age display a higher tendency towards mental health problems and other physical and development disorders, although a causal link could not be proven by the available data.[27] The risks appear to be most acute in adolescent users.[27] In one 2013 review, the authors concluded long-term cannabis use "increases the risk of psychosis in people with certain genetic or environmental vulnerabilities", but does not cause psychosis. Important predisposing factors were genetic liability, childhood trauma and urban upbringing.[26] Another review that same year concluded that cannabis use may cause permanent psychological disorders in some users such as cognitive impairment, anxiety, paranoia, and increased risks of psychosis. Key predisposing variables included age of first exposure, frequency of use, the potency of the cannabis used, and individual susceptibility.[28] Nevertheless, some researchers maintain there exists "a strong association between schizophrenia and cannabis use...", while cannabis use alone does not predict the transition to subsequent psychiatric illness. Many factors are involved, including genetics, environment, time period of initiation and duration of cannabis use, underlying psychiatric pathology that preceded drug use, and combined use of other psychoactive drugs.[29]
And now we are on a trend towards legalizing hallucinogenics.

CoH, what will we do if it is discovered alcoholics and users of cannabis along with other harmful substances can predispose their bad habits to their offspring ?

In other words, the kids are born predisposed to acquiring bad habits.

Cannabis isn't a top mental health issue. Screens are much more detrimental.

JDB, are you saying that testing people (screening) for drug use is more detrimental than using the drugs ?

Think about what the potential detrimental costs of screening people for all kinds of potential physical and mental health issues could be.

Starting with an employer concerned about the cost of providing health care insurance, or a potential parent screening a baby to adopt.

No hoot, I'm saying electronics screens.

That is a huge problem. We are in a multi-generational situation of drug and alcohol abuse. In addition to conditions like fetal alcohol syndrome, we have the problem of social contagion that is not genetic but cultural. Many youngsters live in conditions of cultural rot. A friend who spent a career in juvenile justice often speaks in terms of “feral kids”. These are kids with addicted parents. I think that is an apt description.

I had a simple screening process for mental illness with every one of my wives. Simple short and to the point..

Q - are you female
A - yes

Yep, it's gonna be mental .

It proved to be 100% accurate too.

Seriously? Wiki? This doesn’t even use a study. This an observation or opinion. This could also conclude that mentally ill people gravitate or self medicate. That’s an opinion too.

Hm. I don’t follow. Screens don’t get into your blood, brain, or other organs.

You should read fathers’ posts on here.
