To my knowledge there’s not a legal requirement. But ssa has a form for it and it’s standard practice for the home to submit it to ssa to stop payments and to start for survivor benes. Home also gets death certificates as well. All part of the packageI looked to see if there was a regulation requiring funeral homes to report the death--I couldn't find one, but I didn't spend more than a few minutes searching. Seems like that would be a good regulation to have. It is a simple piece of paper, but it does look like that a surviving spouse or child can report the death to SS over the phone as long as they have the social security number.
One thing I learned was that every fvcking body requires a death certificate, and it has to be an original. No copies. I had to go back and get more than the funeral home ordered for me.Home also gets death certificates as well. All part of the package
