Again, this is people steam rolling into a department who have no idea what they are looking at, coming up with conclusions. And of course, the immediate obligatory tweet saying “fraud fraud fraud fraud fraud”. There is no doubt in my mind that there are people who continue to collect Social Security checks from dead relatives. Mostly because those dead relatives death hasn’t been reported. That is fraud and it’s right on the Social Security website.
Any system as large as Social Security will have fraud. Musk will find some, so it is good to get it found. But in the article the inspector general said fraud was below 1%. Now .9% is still a lot of cash, but it isn't as obscene as the OP nor Musk made it sound.
Private healthcare has a range of fraud that is believed, the low range is 3%.

I looked to see if there was a regulation requiring funeral homes to report the death--I couldn't find one, but I didn't spend more than a few minutes searching. Seems like that would be a good regulation to have. It is a simple piece of paper, but it does look like that a surviving spouse or child can report the death to SS over the phone as long as they have the social security number.
I think it’s just a courtesy they provide to the family. Many people die, homeless with no family thus no funeral.
