20 year old kids don't get tired.*

If they do that, I'd like to see every conference get two bids. Regular season and conference champ. Or two finalists. Or some combination of winner and runner-up. Whatever.
That would leave 64 at large bids. 1/2 of a 128 team field.

128 / 350 is about the same percentage as the NFL‘s 12/32.

“There are 350 schools that are full members of 32 Division I basketball conferences, plus seven more that are in transition from NCAA Division II and one also in transition from NCAA Division III, and are members of Division I conferences.”

8 teams at each site would look like the old ISHAA sectionals …

Also, if it's going to be that big, we shouldn't have a 128-team draw. We should have four 32-team regional draws. First weekend is a true regional tournament with all teams playing relatively close to home, and then the 64 winners move to the "national" tournament.

Would you settle for 8 … 16 team sites?

and let 32 teams advance to a five game tourney

Honestly, I'd be fine with it. I don't think we owe at-large bids anything, anyway. If the best team in the country gets left at home because they f*cked up in the conference tourney, so be it.

I'm watching Vermont and Arkansas play a game in Buffalo in the first round of the "West" region right now. It's a goddamn joke.

After watching the game I think IU flew east from Dayton to the west coast.

As for West region games played in Buffalo etc,, that’s actually so that more teams can play closer to home in the first two rounds. They absolutely try yo put teams close to home, but it’s not always possible.

St Mary's coach said:

"If you're wondering if rest versus playing however many games they did in a short amount of time and flying across the country, there's no question it's an advantage to be rested," Bennett said. "You've still got to do it. You've still got to play well. There's a lot of pressure here first game of the NCAA tournament. So we did all that, but you could see it on their faces. They were gassed, like probably at halftime. They got in too big a hole. Anyhow, let's set the record straight on that. That's how that works. We were in the better spot going into that game as far as the situation to be in."

They were the better team, but they scored 82. They aren't a team to score 82, we aren't a team that gives up 82. That should have been a 10-15 point loss, not 30.

Bottom line I had my IU jersey on yesterday and wasn't walking around pissed and moaning about not getting in. We beat purdue this year and even though we lost yesterday we made the dance. That's improvement.

Someone mentioned after Woodys first team meeting he asked who's all in and nobody raised their hands. He pieced together a roster and here we are. Let Woody recruit some guys and let's get better. This year beat the sh!t out of when Archie was here.

I don't buy it Marv. I get the travel throws you off but the amount of actual minutes these guys play is nothing. They take breaks constantly. And they are young. I think St Mary's is just better.
They may be, I don't know if they are or not based off of last night. People act like the one week well rested team whose coach said they specifically prepared for Indiana all week are not 18-23 year old peak athletes too.

Sorry, I think anyone who doesn't believe that fatigue played a part in the 5th game in 8 days after a really grueling overnight trip is kidding themselves. The game did not turn out how we wanted but this was not just a case of "well that other team was better..."

We would take 15 hour bus rides and play 90 minutes and 120 minutes with one halftime break on back to back days. Tournaments. Sometimes in rain and shit. Then team bus it back. Have a day off then practice and play again. If it's fatigue from travel maybe. But I doubt it. Hell look at D1 baseball. Or pro baseball. They constantly play. The amount of actual time these b-ball kids spend "playing" is nothing. They stand most the time. The game is super short. I guarantee they play pickup for hours on end. Day after day. I'm sure they were "sitting" in a private plane. Sorry I don't buy the tired bit. Not adequate time to prepare a game plan. Definitely! Gassed? Nonsense.

Regardless Woodson did an incredible job. First season and made the tourney. Mission accomplished.

Yeah, but the other teams in those scenarios were probably in the same boat.

To a degree for sure. But not always. No doubt St Mary's had an advantage. I still think gassed is an excuse. They are young. Indiana isn't a great team and that's why they lost. There was a reason St Mary's was a 5 seed. I bet if the roles were reversed St Mary's would have still won handily. It wasn't that IU was gassed. IU has zero shooters and met a good team. Why Indiana in Indiana can't find anyone who can shoot is bizarre

Yep. Exactly. And what state tournaments were being played in that required 15 hour bus rides before the game? 15 hours averaging 55 mph is 825 miles which would land you somewhere in the middle of Florida from my home in Noblesville.

Oh yeah. I won't rehash what i said on teh bball boards but yeah. Being gassed didn't help but they lack shooters and bball IQ. Which don't help either.

Shudder....I've made this trip 3 times in the last 5 years. Straight thru.

I wasn't talking about a "state tournament." I was talking about other sports and in particular myself. I played Division 1 on a team ranked a hell of a lot higher than IU. We would leave Thur on a bus 15 hours, play Fri night. Rest Saturday. Play Sunday. Then get on a bus Sunday or Monday and drive 15 hours back again and play Tuesday or Wednesday. And those were 90 minute games with no breaking running the entire time in cleats. Hell baseball does it all the time. Look at IU. They'll play Fri, Sat, Sun at Clemson then Tuesday and Wednesday somewhere else, then start another 3 game stint that Friday. Why this "gassed" excuse goes on in basketball is bizarre. The games last 40 minutes with a halftime break. Most of it is spent standing around with all the fouls and timeouts.

Saint Mary's was better. They had guys who can shoot. There's a bias that oh The Big Ten team. That's a bias. Iowa got outplayed. And we got destroyed. Being gassed is nonsense unique to hoops. And being a Big Ten team doesn't mean shit to the kids on St. Marys

See my response to Crazy. I don't buy the gassed bit. IF that's the case basketball players would be in a coma if they ever tried to play a D1 baseball schedule. Game after game. Endless travel. Hours and hours in the sun.

Nah, don't bring up baseball. John Kruk played baseball while smoking in between innings in the dugout.
He took his "ball" and went home. Shit those dudes stand for hours in long-sleeves in the sun and play day after day after day. Their travel is absurd. That's fatigue. Hoops fatigue is nonsense.

Except for Sunday almost all games are night now.

Yes, and the committee got it right. St, Mary's is a legit 5 seed and IU was around that 10-12 seed line. Most times a 5 seed will beat the 12 seed and sometimes they'll blow them out. Frankly, I wouldn't be shocked for this SMU team to be one of the surprise Final Four teams we see every year. They are a very smart, disciplined, and experienced team that is very well coached.

I don’t think there is any question IU was gassed and that affected the final score. I have no way of knowing if being gassed was a difference maker. The evidence was obvious. They beat us with their footwork on offensive and defense. We couldn’t throw it in the ocean from the beach. That’s all fatigue.

I get what you are saying about the onerous schedule for some athletes in some sports. But when one team has an onerous schedule and the other doesn’t, I think it’s undeniable that difference will make a difference particularly when the teams are evenly matched.

I’m not close to a division I athlete, but I do know what it means for a 20-year-old to be gassed and I know how performance is enhanced with professionally managed taper and rest. I’m thinking St. Mary’s has professional trainers who had the opportunity to manage physical preparation and IU didn’t. IU had to be a vastly superior team to overcome the physical disadvantage and IU certainly isn’t that.

All in all it was a pretty good year though.

I dunno. IU jammed them up pretty well in the first 10 minutes. They are going to struggle with UCLA (who is longer on the perimeter except for the rastafarian point guard).

Yeah I just don't agree COH. At all. I think St. Mary's was a legit 5 seed and IU barely made the tournament. The difference was quality not rest. IU never has anyone who can shoot. Fresh or tired. See Harry's post above

Ha! Woodson got them in the tourney year 1! Think of all the "well a coach needs 3 years" or "maybe it's 4." Year 1. Full credit to Morisson. He said Woodson would be a good hire
Nah, that's an old Mike Davis quote.....he literally said that in a press conference with the current players on the team watching.

IU beat or played tough highly seeded teams when we didn’t have a full bench. There is not 30 points difference between the two teams. St Mary’s is good and if we play them 5 times they might win 3 but last night’s blowout was an anomaly because of fatigue.

Fatigue from what? Playing 18 minutes two days before and catching a plane? Playing three games 20 minutes or so each game? That's nothing

Maybe instead of the 9th team in the Big Ten getting a bid Davidson and the second team from some of these other conferences should be getting bids. I think this fatigue claim is overstated and the quality of the top teams from other leagues is understated

Have you noticed that Olympic sprinters running the 100 will pull up in early races to conserve for the heat the next day? Bolt didn't run the early 100s all the way through, at about 80 with a lead he'd back off. There is a debate if it works, but they seem to believe it does.

I was going to post about the guys who run 365 marathons a year but didn't for the same distinction on your sprinter. I think the comparisons are too apples to oranges. Fast twitch slow twitch etc

I'm not buying the travel excuse either. Three hours on charter, heading east to west, is not s significant factor. I do think playing five game in 7 days (or whatever it was) definitely is. But not jet lag.

Yes, those long bus rides really sucked. I carried caffeine pills in my bag so I could wake up when we got to the pool. (No Red Bull back then.) The only place we ever flew for training or a meet was to Puerto Rico (for obvious reasons). We even took a bus/vans to the southern tip of Texas for training (and some one-off meets) - 30 hours in Dec./Jan. Hell, one year we had a meet on New Year's Day, outside, in an unheated pool, while it snowed. When I was a professional triathlete (think Eddie the Eagle of ski jumping), flew to various places to race (including Hawaii). Never really bothered me at all (other than some of the return flights, but for different reasons).

I know a lot of marathoners, and one that went to ultramarathoning. Most marathoners taper training for 21 days before the race. Most people that run multiple marathons in a week aren't running to win or set PRs but to finish. They pace themselves at a slower pace than they would if they were running a marathon. In the case of IU, they probably didn't pace themselves against Wyoming.

Your second paragraph might be right, but I don’t think IU/st Mary’s is evidence if that. Michigan handled a good Colorado State team.

IU faded terribly at the end of the half and the fade worsened in the second half. I think I U fades in that game no matter who they played.
