“They’re eating the pets of the people that live there!”

This is going to be a huge problem for Trump. A large part of his constituency wants abortion banned or severely restricted at the federal level. Trump's position is that abortion on demand until birth is OK with him if that's what a state's law is. There are pro-life groups that are already talking about not supporting him unless he starts giving lip service again to a federal ban or at least severe restrictions on abortion.
It’s only a huge problem because the media and Democrats keep using it as a cudgel. There is absolutely nothing controversial about Trump’s oft-stated position.

I am curious if you read the parts below. "Preserving the environment" doesn't sound CO. "Elevated levels of income", suggest raising the minimum wage or supporting unions and one is a radical socialist. "slow-moving legislative process", hmm, which party is the party of no compromise, on anything, ever? From the article:

The best-performing economies balance productivity and prosperity, meaning they can generate elevated levels of income and quality of life for their citizens while preserving the environment and social cohesion,” Arturo Bris, Director of the WCC said with respect to this year's ranking.

Social cohesion, adaptability and agility are qualities the U.S., with its increasingly polarized political landscape and its slow-moving legislative process, currently lacks, which partly explains the U.S. economy’s gradual decline from the top of IMD’s annual ranking.
Our disintegrating social cohesion is a ginormous problem. A free public education should build cohesion, instead we deliberately destroy cohesion in many ways. Lack of social cohesion is one of the root causes of our increasingly dysfunctional politics.

I think we have crossed the Rubicon on this and the damage we have done is irreparable. The United States will move forward with segments of high-functioning high achievers with most of the rest of us discontent onlookers.

No comment on the rest?

Some of us have warned about the huge disparity between the high overachiever and the rest of us for a long time. At one time the top 1% had about as much wealth as the bottom 90%. That was in circa 1980 and before. Now it isn't close, the top 1% has far more wealth.

That isn't good for a society, very banana Republicesque. Yet when mentioned it is dismissed as the market is perfect, they deserve it, etc.

Boeing admits to over penny pinching which inevitably means the CEO is paid tens of millions to keep employee wages as low as humanly possible. Look at CEO wages before Jack Welch, they were far closer to employee wages. The market changed when he began his reign of profiting by driving GE into the ground. That wasn't the fault of DEI, liberals, or immigrants. The hero of today's business leader found a way to exploit the system for personal gain over that of employees, business allies, etc.

I saw an interesting take on the eating of pets issue, Trump/Vance want it page 1. Sure, it is crazy they believe it, but it isn't a vote changer. Abortion is the issue they are most worried about, any day it is knocked from the headline is a good day for them. So stupid Haitian comments is this week's distraction.

Except he's saying that women in Texas (or any other state that decides this issue with Legislative fiat) should have inferior health care chocies than women in the rest of the country, including some Red states. If you want to claim the people of the state decide and have a voice, then you can't allow a bunch of gerrymandered legislators who never face all the voters of the state to make decisions for women in distrcts they don't represent...

The 60% threshold is not really fair either, but I'll give credit to FL for actually allowing their draconian measure to actually be on the ballot (where it will get trounced). Completely opposite is a state like Texas where no way in hell they actually let people have an electoral say...

Most of “the rest” comes from lack of social cohesion.

The high over achieving segment means much more than money. It all starts with crappy educations for millions of kids. It’s a doom loop. Todays poorly educated kids are the offspring of 1, 2, or 3 generations of crappy educations.

There is way too much us v. them in your second and third paragraphs for me to be sucked once again into that rabbit hole.

The WSJ busted this story wide open. They even discovered that the woman who made the very first post was not only a Trumper, but that she discovered her kitty (Miss Sassy) in her own basement a few days later. Trump and Vance are knowingly lying, which of course galvanizes their supporters. But I think inevitably with Independents it's just a further reminder why Trump is so deeply unpopular and boomerangs against them...

This segment from his speech on Long Island yesterday may establish a new record for lies knowingly told within a 2 or 3 minute period...

Meh, I wouldn't put too much stock in IMD's report. I do find the report interesting and they have some great data from responses among corporate executives, but the real reason the U.S. dropped outside of the Top 10 is because of government inefficiency.

On top of that, some of your quotes make it much easier for places like Singapore or Switzerland, smaller countries with high incomes per capita, to outpace larger, more diverse countries.

All I know is that Asian and European companies are really trying to invest more in the U.S. I've seen it in many of the deals we are working on. Unfortunately for them, U.S. firms move much more quickly and tend to be more aggressive on M&A.

So your limit of us vs them is "elites"? That is VERY us v them.

Welch changed the corporate culture, placing short-term profits ahead of long-term investment. He made the mass exodus of factory jobs a reality. Reginald H Jones was his predecessor at GE, he made $1 million his last year at GE in 1980. He made $100,000 in 1979. By 1999 Welch was making $75 million/year. His employees didn't have near that growth.

Real Padtor in Springfield. “Most people in Springfield are glad they are here”. “We were a shrinking city”. “Haitians starting businesses”. “Bomb threats killing all local businesses”.

Just stop with this hogwash. Abortion is about abortion. It isn’t about “health care choices”.
Health care is a part of it. A, it is a health care procedure. You may not like that fact, but a fact it is. Second, there are these case:

That last one, I just had a daughter go through an ectopic pregnancy, it is very dangerous. There is far from a clear consensus on what "life of mother" means. Until we get a handle on that, no matter that you don't believe it is part of health care, it most certainly is. No one would dream of telling someone with a ruptured appendix they can't be treated and need to travel many hours to another state.

Sorry about the ectopic pregnancy. Hope it was caught before rupture.

About 3.7% of abortions are therapeutic abortions. There isn’t much controversy about those except for the deliberate efforts by advocacy groups.

Fortunately, it was though it took an unusually long amount of time to resolve. The ectopic came just 8 months after she had a miscarriage. Physically both were hard for her, emotionally they were devastating. One of our other daughters has a child and is expecting twins in December. I know the oldest is thrilled for her, but it all adds to the weight she is carrying from the two problems above.

I've seen (unverified) accounts from people responding in comments sections that one of the reasons Springfield employers welcomed Haitians and needed to find quality employees, was that Springfield had a huge drug problem which affected the workforce. I do know that McGregor the owner of cGregors Metals is on record as saying that lack of drug issues was another factor that distinguished Hatian immigrants from the local work force...

Sorry to hear that. We wish your daughter well.
