Thoughts on last night, and IUs future

Overall, I just think last night was...weird. St Mary's is not a good enough team, overall, to do what they did to us. And the only way that happens, is our guys had to have quit mentally. Which would make exactly 1 game all year long, that that has happened. So it's just weird, to me, that whatever the conditions, circumstances, something about Mary's, whatever it was, caused us to quit...not in some game in the long, grinding, month of January...not against an obviously more talented team...but in what was probably one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, games in each of our players lives, against a good, but not great mid major level program.

All the flaws and weaknesses were exposed last night, obviously. But we've had them all year long, and we've ground out respectable performances in basically every game. Even the "blowout" losses to Illinois and Michigan, the 2 games all season long where we might have seemed to not show up, or to quit...they were very competitive games well into the 2nd half.

So...weird.

Going forward its going to be fascinating, to me, what players stay and what players go. Most likely we won't be able to make too many conclusions on how good the culture is, how well the guys like each other, where everyone's minds are at, etc... just by who stays and who leaves. But obviously if we have a mass exodus, that isn't good. Its not good for the product on the court, but more importantly, it'd be a terrible indicator that the locker room wasn't as good or as strong as many of us hoped it was. We have a flawed roster right now. We have a flawed coach. But both of those things can improve. The guys that come back can shoot hundreds/thousands of shots a day and get better. We can get transfers and recruits that will make it better. Coach Woodson can watch film, reflect, pick Matta's brain, etc... and get a lot better. I actually assume those things will all happen. But if we see a mass exodus of players, that's a sign that something deeper is broken. That the late game fades are a result of something deeper. That the reason for the seemingly "weird" game last night, could be a culmination of those deeper issues.

So, I'm actually hoping every single one of our players wants to come back. Because for me, that would be an incredibly good sign that Woody and the guys have something strong foundationally to build on for next year. Because if that's true, using this year as a benchmark and starting point, we have a chance to be a lot better, and really good next year.

Obviously everyone can't come back. With 3 incoming freshmen, some are going to have to leave. And who those people are will certainly have an impact on how good we'll be next year. But its MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more important, to me, why they end up leaving, than who actually leaves. We have older guys, a couple that have legit chances at making money playing basketball. Leaving to explore those opportunities, that's healthy and expected for a high level program. We also have a slew of talented younger kids, that didn't get much playing time this year. Those are the kids I'll be paying closer attention to. If kids like Tamar, Jordan, Khristian, Trey, Anthony, Logan...leave...that's not a good sign for our program, in my opinion. As with most things...it'll likely end up being somewhere in the middle.

We shall see. Weird night last night.

Now that (some) of the emotion of the loss/finality has calmed

It is fair to take a step back and look at where this program is this season and how it almost was...

I apologize for those that have seen this as I have posted similar here and other forums before.

Almost to the day one year ago Scott Dolson who had been AD for a cup of coffee did what virtually no one expected. He moved on Archie as a new AD with a new President coming in, in the middle of a pandemic with university-wide cutbacks all with a lopsided buy out.

After negotiations with our first target did not work out SD hired Mike Woodson.

Had this not happened, we would today be talking about AM being fired just this week after winning three less pre-conf games than we did, 5 less league games than we did because of no TJD, JG, X and stuck with AM as the coach. There would have been no post season after BTT where we would have exited on Wednesday. (No NIT) We would have no solid recruits coming in and none with interest. We would be a rock bottom.

Instead, because of the surprise action and despite some poor stretches of play we won 20 games, broke long losing streaks to two teams, came within a circus bank shot of playing in (and likely winning) our first BTT, qualified for the Dance and finished with a winning record in the post-season. We have solid recruits coming in and more with interest. Indiana fans packed Gainbridge for three sessions of the BTT more than any other, packed Dayton fieldhouse and shipped 5,000+ fans to Portland which no other fanbase would do, particularly one that was going to be a decided underdog.

None of us are remotely satisfied because there is a ton of work to do, but we are a full year ahead of what any odds maker would have given us March 1, 2021.

This will be a fascinating summer and fall.

Go Hoosiers

Jackson Davis

He has shown great improvement over this past season . That being said he still needs to be able to score outside 5 ft . He should declare for the draft , go through the combine , and get feedback . After that he should then decide whether to go to the NBA , or return to IU. I hope he returns , but if he is told that he would be drafted and be able to collect millions then you couldn’t blame him for going . We will know by June , and our coaching staff already has a good idea what his plans are . Best of luck to him what ever he decides .

Question about utility work

Aren't utilities required to restore areas that they dig up? Our neighborhood had utility work start in October, finish in December. Annoyingly, they started placing flags in yards way back in April and again in July, so mowing around flags became a sport most of the summer. But after the subcontractor left in December, they left things as is. So I have a large dirt mound and a hole they placed a concrete box in. The box occupies most of the hole but I believe there should be dirt on top and around the box. A lot of grass was destroyed by the digging equipment. All winter long my front yard has been mud. But I was thinking come spring, they would fix it.

We've had a beautiful week in Bloomington and no signs of anyone. This is a great time to get grass in to get growing. The dirt mound has set pretty solid, so digging it out would be annoying. Not to mention the cost of getting sod to replace the large area destroyed (growing seed is just flat out impossible, I've tried that on bare spots for years).

So am I accurate that the company has the obligation to restore the lawn? I know that AT&T was the utility involved, but I don't recall who the contractor was. But I suspect the digging contractor would not be the repair contractor. I was looking at the county government website, I don't see a branch that seems to deal with this sort of issue. I'm curious, what would people here do in such a circumstance.

Frankly, there should be a law that they leave notices when they do work stating how long it should take and what they will do after. The only reason I even knew they were working for AT&T was I spoke to the second person out planting flags.

Senate passes year around DST.

I do not care if it is DST or standard, the time needs to be the same all year long. The Senate passed a year around DST bill today. Though I hate the name of the bill, "The Sunshine Protection Act".

I have no idea if the House will approve, it appears 43% of Americans prefer standard and 32% approve Daylight. That makes me think it may not succeed.

Bring back 64 team format

Forget this ridiculous format where teams need to play only 2 or three days after a challenging and brutal conference tournament. Every team deserves the same amount of rest. And then, expect these kids to fly cross country and play 48 hours later is not fair to the players. The extra money is not worth sacrificing fairness to 8 teams in the field.

IU Blog Sites - “Blogger Boys”

As I type on a blog site - message board, I’m curious about how others feel on the plethora of “blogger boys” surrounding IU hoops. What’s your take? Enjoy the coverage or get off my lawn?

I’m firmly in the get off my lawncamp. It seems to me IU is needs to turn the corner on being more style than substance. This week we had grown men in their 40s following the team around the hotel, “motor boating” statues on the streets of Portland while dressed in red suits, etc. Also, constantly interacting with 17 year old at events and via social media. (not just quick interviews at AAU tournaments which seems reasonable to me)

Also, never offering any constructive criticism because they want to pump sunshine and keep access to the team.

My perception is this is a distraction to the success of the program and possibly recruiting? Old news get over it?

I never really batted an eye at Peegs, etc. converage over the years, but it seems like we’ve ventured into some embarrassing “coverage” these days.
