This Post Secret - For GOP Only

When your basketball team sucks, what do you do?

Go back to fundamentals.

So that’s what we need to do:

1. Strong national defense.
2. Strong, pro-business/incentives for job creation and job seekers, disincentives for corporate job contraction.
3. Strong pro-education - trade school and higher ed. School receipt of aid dollars escrowed and dependent on post-graduation job rates?
4. Safety net.
5. Minimum tax for all tax entities (individual and corporate)/cap on deductions to assure some skin in the game - also hopefully operates as an incentive for all to oppose wasteful spending. Maybe even move toward capped sales/spending tax, and away from income tax. Sales tax on weed and sex work. Probably end the deficit in weeks.

Friday Recruiting Notebook - Aug. 19

As it stands right now, Indiana's class of 2023 is coming down to top-50 forward Arrinten Page, who visited Indiana a few weeks ago. Page told TheHoosier.com last week that his Miami (Fla.) official visit is still on so that is something to monitor there. He said it was scheduled for Aug. 25-27.

NIL could play a factor in Page's decision but from what we hear it may not be a top priority in terms of it being a top key factor. Indiana still sits in a great spot and has checked up off multiple boxes.

He has also visited Missouri, Cincinnati, and USC up to this point.

Here are some of our scouting notes plus scouting video of Page:

"Page shows versatility to play inside and out. He has a terrific motor and that's what allows him go be so productive. With so many ball handlers and shot-happy guards on his team, very few offensive possessions run through Page unless its a pick and pop or roll. Whether it's running the court for easy buckets in transition, offensive rebounds or in the PnR game, Page is very effective when he gets looks at the rim. He is a powerful low post player but also excels on rebound putbacks."

Indiana is really starting to pick up steam in terms of recruiting the 2024 class.

As it stands right now, players like Players like Liam McNeeley, Derik Queen, Jaeden Mustaf, Asa Newell, Jonathan Powell, Kanon Catchings, William Jobe are all players who have already visited Indiana, have a junior year official visit scheduled or are expected to visit this fall. They seem to be at the top tier target group for the Indiana staff right now.

Another player that is in that top tier is 2024 power forward Raleigh Burgess, who has confirmed with TheHoosier.com that he is on an unofficial visit to Indian this weekend. This will be Burguess's second unofficial visit at Indiana as he took his first one in early June. He is currently on campus.

The main schools for Burgess right now include Indiana, Purdue, Cincinatti, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Xavier.

TheHoosier.com has seen Burguess multiple times this summer with him playing on the very talented Indiana Elite 16u squad which also features other 2024 target Flory Bidunga.

Below are scouting notes from what we have seen and what he said about Indiana offer recently:

"Standing at 6-foot-10, Burgess is a center that has incredible movement and real solid footwork. Pretty versatile big that can do a little bit of everything. He can score from multiple levels and is a little bit crafty for his size. Although he can score from the outside, he is at his best around the basket where he can use his strength and physical play to get at the rim. He also proved to be a consistent force on the defensive end with his shot blocking ability. For a big, he has some real solid court vision and made a few sharp passes to his teammates."

---

The 2025 recruiting class is starting to pick up steam as well.

The top news to come out of the 2025 group this past week is that elite in-state prospects Trent Sisley and Jalen Haralson have scheduled two more return visits to Indiana.

Those next two visits are scheduled for Hoosier Hysteria on Oct. 7 and also on Nov. 30 for Indiana's game against preseason No. 1 North Carolina for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. They both took a visit to Indiana couple of weeks ago. Indiana sits in a very good spot for them both.

---

2025 small forward Bryson Tiller is also starting to become a high priority target for Indiana. He recently participated in the UA Elite 24 game in Chicago.

Tiller transferred to Overtime Elite this summer but is originally from Georgia. He played for the same

More on Tiller:

2025 guard/forward EJ Walker is a new name that has popped up recently as of late. He is based out of Erlanger, KY.

Walker is in the process of setting up visits to Indiana, he tells TheHoosier.com.

Right now has visits set up with Purdue (8/27), Ohio State (9/10), West Virginia (9/17), Illinois State (10/7), and Illinois (10/8).

He currently holds offers from Youngstown, Duquense, NKU, Ohio, Toledo, and Stoneybrook.

Walker has had multiple conversations with Indiana this week.

Walker on his game: “One word to describe my game is versatility. Creating for others and making everybody around me better and doing whatever it takes to win is how I play. I’m a three level scorer that loves to rebound and guard multiple positions.”

Is there a reason basketball needed to have an event now?

Too many fans already look for the first possible reason (bullshit excuse) to abandon and ignore the football team during the season for basketball, and now the school is letting them steal the spotlight and distract people before the football team even plays a game.

It is so f*cking frustrating that this school’s athletic priorities will never be in the right place for a serious power conference school, and this is just one of many examples.

From making Allen pay out of pocket to fire assistants, to knowingly scheduling Midnight Madness on the same day as football games time after time after time, to countless other obvious examples of favoritism throughout time.

It never ends, and the school going out of its way to try to kneecap the football program and any enthusiasm it might build doesn’t seem like it will either. The last thing the team needs going into a crucial opener is a bunch of casuals looking ahead to basketball and not caring or showing up, but that’s clearly what IU wants.

Quantum mechanics is really, really weird

One of the most famous experiments in physics is the double-slit experiment, in which a beam of light is shot through two slits to produce an interference pattern on a surface or detector on the other side. What's strange about it is, even if the beam of light is reduced to send only one photon at a time, the pattern still emerges, as though each individual photon is passing through both slits at once and interfering with itself.

About two decades ago, scientists further explored this phenomenon with the delayed choice experiment. Basically, a photon is sent through a beam splitter, off mirrors, and toward a (potential) second beam splitter. If the second beam splitter is there, the individual photons behave like waves that were split and recombined, and show an interference pattern. If it isn't, they behave like particles that chose only one of the two paths, and display no interference. It as if the photons know whether or not they should act as particles or waves when they hit the first splitter. Even more strange, it appears if the "choice" of whether or not to use the second splitter can be delayed until after the photon hits the first splitter, and reach back in time to determine what choice the photon made.

Now, scientists have tested this on a grand scale. Photons were split on earth, bounced off a satellite, and returned to earth to either be recombined or not. The choice in each test run was made after the photon had already reached the satellite in space, and yet the photons still behaved (i.e., showed an interference pattern or not) as though they already knew what the choice would be when the hit the first splitter, before ever heading off into space.

It's really difficult to wrap your head around what this really means. Much like entanglement, in which a paired particle reacts instantaneously to a measurement made on its partner at a distance, it seems to potentially violate our basic assumptions about relativity and causality. So, do we simply not quite understand the makeup of reality, or does reality somehow shift itself to match our measurements of it, even reaching back in time if necessary to do so? Creepy.

Advanced OL Stats

When looking at the 2021 IU OL, these stats jumped out:

Indiana’s offensive line finished 119th in the nation in Line Yards per Carry and 91st nationally in Sack Rate, putting the team near the bottom of the list in statistics related to both pass and run blocking. IIRC the OL was actually pretty healthy last year.

Watching Hiller comment on the OL was embarassing. He never really talks about working with players individually to develop their skills/techniques. He talked about "consistency" but what good is consistency if what they are doing consistently is ineffective? Or not really improving the individual player's skills?

Last night I watched a little of the GB exhibition against the Saints and Caleb Jones played left tackle in the second half quite a bit. Jones looked like he was in the best shape of his life, nearly svelte, and his footwork and use of his arms and hands/punch on pass blocking was something I never saw at IU. It's like he got coached on fundamentals for the first time, and the coaches are getting through to him what he has to do to maximize his potential. In other words, almost a total indictment of what happened with him at IU. Granted, money is a huge motivator and this is probably it for Caleb's football career if he doesn't do something there, but one wonders what motivational techniques were being used at IU. I never really felt anyone at IU really held him accountable and impressed on him what he needed to do physically and helped him with technique. What a waste.

Hillbilly Elegy- The reality show...

I always was curious about JD Vance seeking to run for office in Ohio. since I thought his roots were more centered around West Virginia and Kentucky... Maybe he thought it was easy pickings, but it's turned out to be anything but... And the race is looking more and more like "must see tv"...

Hard to believe these folks were at one point represented by John Kasich, as far as providing the leadership for the Ohio GOP. The craziness first surfaced with the redistricting battle between the GOP-controlled Legislature, the Independent Commission and the Supreme Court. Basically the voters in Ohio approved a fairness in redistricting measure in 2015, which requires the new districts to reflect the 54-46% split, and the Legislators have drawn 4 maps that abused the process. The 4-3 GOP majority Supreme Court has rejected those maps, and in each case it has been the Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor who has sided with the 3 Dems to thwart the wannabee kingmakers in the Legislature. This has resulted in some Legislators calling for her to be Impeached, even though she served as Lt Governor under Taft and has won statewide elections to the Supreme Court on 5 different occasions and her races have never been close. Some background on that here- but this is just the opening act in this 3 ring circus...

Then there is the GOP Senate Primary, where the two leading contenders (Mandel and Gibbons) practically came to blows during a debate 3 weeks while ago while Timken and Vance watched initially, and then Vance made a show of getting up and playing peacemaker... The video is like a teenager arguing with Grandpa, while Mom and Dad watch before Dad steps in to make sure junior and Grandpa don't come to blows...

So then last week, there were rumors that Trump was going to pull another Oz and endorse Vance, and Ohio MAGA was in an uproar over that possibility. The other 3 and their people begged Trump not to endorse anyone (and certainly not Vance), but Trump is Trump and he loves him some celebrities. So on Friday...

Of course many of Trump's followers were dismayed, pointing out that Vance had called himself a "never-Trumper" in 2016... And then today a one time friend of Vance's named Josh McLaurin released texts that Vance had sent him in 2016, when they were both concerned about what Trump represented...Check out Vance here. Not sure what will be more damaging to Vance- referring to Trump as a possible Hitler, or describing the GOP as the party of "lower-income, lower-education white people"...

Now someone tweeted that Trump put out a statement saying he forgave Vance, and he's since shown he's a MAGA warrior (aka he expressed approval for the Big Lie) But I did see this blurb from NBC announcing that Jr has announced he'll be campaigning with Vance at an upcoming rally in Ohio... Tell me that won't be AWKWARD...

I'm thinking the announcement came before the tweet was released...

Next Senator from PA- Judge for yourself...

So Fetterman has been mentioned in a lot of different threads, and I wanted to give anyone who were interested in finding out more about him the opportunity to see and judge for yourself. He seems to be a fairly polarizing figure on the board, and rather than having to choose which of the several threads to post this in I thought I'd start a thread where anyone interested can basically check out his past.

This is kind of the actual visualization of what I have read and learned about him, but I had no idea it existed till it showed up in my feed. Maybe I'm too easily impressed or maybe it's a fundamental difference between the qualities that Dems and Pubs respectively value in a public servant, but I came away more impressed than I already was.

Not only am I pretty sure he is the best man for PA, but I'm not sure there is a more genuine or dedicated candidate running in any other race. The fact that he gained a lot of popularity by fighting back against the Mastriano/Trump Big Lie nonsense in PA is an added bonus, but it's easy to see why a lot of folks in PA really like him and are excited to vote for him...

I wonder if there's a candidate running anywhere who is more genuinely concerned with making the lives of the people he represents better? My personal inclination is No...

George Will: Trump has a dangerous disability

I hesitated posting this op-ed from George Will because I assumed a vocal minority here will be up in arms about it. After that consideration, I decided to go forward with it because this isn't some far-left rag saying this - it's George Will. I know he's been very public in his disdain for Trump, but I'm curious how even the most ardent Trump supporter could read this piece and refute it.

Another assumption I'll go ahead and make (and by all means feel free to let me know if I'm wrong), is that Trump's lack of intellectual curiosity and that he's not even close to the most articulate guy in just about any room he enters are foregone conclusions.

I don't believe Will is off base here, but what say ye, Trump supporters of the Water Cooler?

SI - 2023 Four-Star Shooting Guard DeShawn Harris-Smith Discusses Indiana, Mike Woodson

Why does IU (& other schools?) have "Title Inflation"

Not that this is the end of the world, but when I saw this in article on the new WR coach Henry, who I'm very bullish on, it reminded me of some titles I do wonder about, i.e. to where it can look like all Chiefs, no Indians, or if it can be bad for morale if you don't have one of those extra's in your title?

The quote: "...Henry has his hands full at Indiana as both the wide receivers coach and serving the duties of co-offensive coordinator alongside Walt Bell." Does anyone think Walt Bell is not the final say for the offense and not the true, full OC here? I'm not saying Bell isn't perhaps highly collaborative, especially to his two former NFL coaches on the offensive staff. But I do not think of them as "co-offensive coordinators" and very few people in the media would say that either.

Some more:
Johnson: Assoc Head Coach/RB's
Shelby: Assistant Head Coach/Cornerbacks
Henry: Co-OC/WR (per above)
Hiller: Run Game Coordinator/OL

I don't think there should be a "run game coordinator" if you have a good OC! And if it's not truly a co-OC, why call it that?
What's the difference between an Associate HC and and Assistant HC?

Just killing some time before the kick off in 3 weeks. I guess if they all don't mind it, then sort of who cares. Just seems like a bank with 50 Vice Presidents. :)

*Have great seats for Illinois Friday night game. Want to believe all these great coaches are going to have this team ready to go 1-0!

Where's my free money???

Republicans passed the giveaway, where the hell is it? They've got my bank info on file, just drop it in my account, fer cryin' out loud. What's the holdup?

Inflation? We ain't got no stinking inflation.

LLWS

I'm a casual watcher of the Little League World Series, so it always surprises how much it looks like MLB.

For example, I saw a team turn a 5-4-3 double play with no hesitation and later saw an outfielder decide not to throw to home plate (because it would have been too late) but instead throw to second to peg a lackadaisical baserunner who had run too far toward third base.

Good baseball is good baseball.

Tertiary Factor

There's been some discussion from the Big Ten Network (and elsewhere) about Illinois having an advantage because it will be their second game (e.g., you improve the most from the first to second game) and our (Indiana's) first. As the back and forth goes, this will at least be partially offset by having the game at our place; we will have 2022 game film on them, but they will have none. Reasonable talking points in a game that during the pre-season seems to be a "pick-em" and critical to both teams' bowl aspirations.

One other tertiary factor, that has not been mentioned--to the best of my knowledge--is the Illini will be game prepping on a short week. They will have six days instead of seven to prepare, and then they will have to go on their first road game of the year (admittedly, a three hour bus trip is not too onerous especially when you get to stop at the Beef House). Probably more of a factor later in the season, but I'll take any slight edge whether its physical and/or psychological.

In all honesty….

I really wish they didn’t publicize this one. I’m not even sure he’s the best punter at IU and I do t know if we even have other punters. I try to get excited about watch list mentions , but can’t here.

Giving Hiller this year for his review

I have definitely been a critique of Hiller’s OL results the last 2-3 seasons. So I make no bones had he been asked to go with Sheridan, I would have said it was justified.

But given I want to see Coach Allen successful and don’t think last season is the true IU we hope to see this year, I am trying to be fair to Coach Hiller.

I believe he has heard the message: the OL has to improve or a change will need to be made.

I give him credit for shedding what looks to be at least 25-30 LBs Orr more. That is not only good for his health, but I think it shows he felt he had to make drastic changes in his coaching production and of himself.

I believe Bell knows a lot about scheme and how to help an OL fit their skills. And I imagine he’s watched the film and seen what he wants them to fix.

I also think the OL has some pride and knows what people think of their performance last year, and will bring some of their own juice to the season.

I don’t want to root against Hiller bc that would be rooting against IU. I want IU to go as far as they can with as many wins as possible.

So I’m going to pull for the IU offense to thrive, which means if they do, that the OL is playing well. I hope that is the case. Hopefully the discipline to lose the weight he did will also be seen in a new focus on excellence in his coaching too.

SI -Why the ESPN–Big Ten Split Shocked College Sports, and How It Impacts Everyone

Not at all "shocked" and surely immune from whatever "impacts" are being discussed, but so not loving the era of purple 'journalism'.

Two weeks from tonight

Is it crazy to call a season opener a must-win game? Not if bowl eligibility is the goal. Looking at our schedule, It's hard to see a path to six wins if we're unable to beat the Illini at home.

Illinois may have a slight edge with a game under their belt. The flip side of that is we'll have the benefit of some game film (although they probably won't open the playbook against Wyoming), and they'll have no film of us.

Gotta find a way to get the W. Go Hoosiers!

Friday Funnies

New York Bar:

Frank was getting ready to go on a trip to New York for the first time, and was talking to his friend Bill.

Bill: “While you are in New York, there is a bar that you have to go to. When you walk through the front door, you are handed a free drink. Then you can go to the back room and get laid. Come back up to the bar, and you get another free drink. Then you can get laid again. It goes on like this all night.”

Frank: “That sounds unbelievable. Have you really been there?”

Bill: “No, but my sister has.”
