Sex and Genghis Khan

@iuwclurker Taking this off thread to address your curiosity without further mucking up the Ukraine thread.

We can learn a lot about how people are related to each other generally through virtually any genetic comparison. If a group of people all share the same discrete set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (individual changes in a single nucleotide at a specific point in the genome), then they are very likely closely related. However, for purposes of genealogy, this can easily get messy, because 45 of our 46 autosomes can pass from either the mother or the father, and can also switch genes back and forth during meiosis, in a process called recombination. This quickly can lead to genetic drift, further blurring genealogical lines. There are two special cases, however, that are useful for genealogy: Y-chromosomes and mitochondria.

Y-chromosomes are only passed down the male line, because they can only be supplied by a sperm. Mitochondria are only passed down the female line, because they don't exist in sperm, and therefore can only come from an egg. So if two people have identical mitochondria, they have a recent common female-line ancestor, and if two men have identical Y-chromosomes, they have a recent common male-line ancestor. With the Y-chromosome, we can only directly test males, but we can also count how many sisters and half-sisters those males have by the same father, and, at any rate, since people tend to have male and female offspring at roughly the same rate, if x% of the male population shares a common male-line ancestor, it's likely that very close to x% of the female population consists of sisters and paternal half-sisters and various forms of cousins who also share that same ancestor (that is to say, females whose father also had the same Y-chromosome).

Long story short, what the study you didn't get to fully read about actually said was that, among people living in the former Mongol territories, about 8% of males (and therefore, most likely, about 8% of the entire population) have a relatively recent male-line common ancestor. An argument has been put forward for the case that said ancestor is Genghis Khan himself, although without his remains or the remains of someone verifiably known to be related to him in the direct male line, we can't say for certain that it was actually him.

Message from Bill Maher to his new "fans" in MAGA world...

So Bill Maher ostensibly addressed this to the "Fox News Editors", but I can't help but wonder if he might be sending a message out to all his newly discovered fans here on the Board as well. I've never been a huge fan and don't watch his show,. But I've noticed quite a few people here posting his recent attacks on wokeness and what he labels as the wackiness of the Left. Not surprising that the celebration of Maher in right wing media would make it's way here...

It appears he felt the need to clear up any confusion about where he stands ideologically, especially since the "Editors at Fox" have sort of co-opted his message by focusing on the one or two negatives he says about the Dems while totally ignoring his far more rigorous critique of the GOP. He may describe some elements of the Dems as "toxic" and wacky, but that characterization seems pretty minor compared to what he has to say about the prevailing craziness in the GOP...Doesn't appear that he'd be voting for many of the new era Pubs...

Can I get some Fife/Rabjohns clarity here?

Am I correct that Rabjohns was saying just a few weeks ago that Woodson had shut out assistant coaches and wasn't getting input from them, but rather from Jim Todd and Randy Wittman instead?

Am I correct that many assumed that Dane Fife was the source of that info to Rabjohns?

And then last week Rabjohns published or spoke about some of the things that apparently caused Fife to get the heave ho, but many accused Rabjohns of being a mouthpiece for Woodson and that info being leaked to him specifically to get the word out about Fife's transgressions....and many/some have said these were strictly fabricated or embellished (by either Woodson or Rabjohns). Is any of that false?

So, depending upon who you believe (or what tin foil hat you're wearing), Rabjohns is not only 'boys' with Fife and publishing info he gets from him, but also a mouthpiece for Woodson and publishing leaks from him to make Fife look bad. Is that all accurate?

I'm no Rabjohns fan. Maybe he'll go cover Lander's new team and ooh and aah over him wherever he goes. But I'm having a hard time keeping up with all of the theories and relationships.

Rough offseason so far

Two days after the season ends Fife gets canned for NILs and politics, Matta leaves whatever the hell his job title was at IU for Butler, our star point guard gets arrested for reckless driving. Not to mention the litany of other transfers (albeit mostly players that people wanted/expected to leave).

I think we can all agree that this is a less than ideal start for Woody's first offseason.

Grammy’s

Don’t ask but apparently I’m watching this because of the wife and daughter.

FAMILY TIME!!!

This shit is awful. Who are these people. Chris Stapleton was cool and completely out of place. The Bruno Mars Anderson Paak group was pretty ok.

But f*ck. The rest of this shit is ponderous.

Obligatory get off my lawn while I walk to school uphill both ways as I pull up my bootstraps.

At least nobody’s been slapped yet.

Peegs - IU Offer to 2023 PG Miro Little - Highlights and, well, wow.

Certainly seems to know what it means to play downhill.
