Pitching strategy for the Terps...

Will the Terps go with their ace right out of the gate against us or save him and go with their No. 2 or No. 3 starter since we are the 8th seed? - and looking at their stats, they have two starting aces for their Friday and Saturday starts during the season and they have alternated those starters some during the season as far as the Friday start goes. Here are a couple of their stats and their No. 1 and No. 2 starters are quite similar in numbers. Maryland is 2nd in hitting in the B1G with a team batting avg. of .308 and their team ERA is 4.80 which is 4th in the league. I guess I should add that Dean pitched the 2nd (Fri) game of the Purdue series with Ramsey missing a start, so I'm guessing that Ramsey will be on the mound against us.

RHP Jason Savacool and he has been starting the last two or three series of the season on Friday. He has an ERA of 2.71 with a WHIP of 1.01.

LHP Ryan Ramsey has often been the Saturday starter and he has an ERA of 2.98 with a WHIP of 1.04.

RHP Nick Dean has been their Sunday starter and he has an ERA of 4.54 with a WHIP of 1.36.

Friday Recruiting Notebook - May 27

The class of 2022 is set so attention has turned and gone full steam ahead to the class of 2023.

Indiana needs a big man in 2023 with guards' Jakai Newton and Gabe Cupps committed and the loss of Race Thompson and Trayce Jackson-Davis after next season.

The top two 'bigs' are Arrinten Page and Xavier Booker. The Hoosiers have made Page a priority during the first two live evaluation periods and have had at least one assistant at every game, including four-deep (with the inclusion of point guard Xavier Johnson as the fourth) for the second live period in Indianapolis.

Page is still taking things slow but continues to reiterate that his communication with Indiana is going well and they talk very consistently.

As for Booker, the in-state product is competing in the USA Basketball U18 tryouts this week in Houston. He has had a phenomenal spring, if not the best out of any prospect in the country. Our Rivals national analyst Rob Cassidy thinks Booker could crack the top-10 in the new Rivals150 when those are released in the next few weeks.

Here is what he said recently:

"You’d be hard-pressed to find a prospect that has had a better spring than Booker, who first came on the national radar last year around this time. The junior looks like a much different prospect now, as he’s gone from “intriguing long-term prospect” to “one of the best bigs in the country” in one calendar year. Booker has added an improved jumper from deep to a game that already included the ability to score inside and consistently block shots. He’s also seen his ball handling improve dramatically. The top 10 is not out of reach for the Indiana-based center."

Indiana has been one of the main groups in the second tier of his recruitment for some time now, but it seems to be changing. IU is starting to push harder for a visit this summer and that's not out of the question. Michigan State is the perceived leader at the moment, but sources confirm that's nowhere near a done deal and he is still very open.

We'll see what happens but Indiana is making it known that it wants to get a visit.

---

As for the rest of the 2023 class, as noted in the Hot Board update last week, wings like Jamie Kaiser and TJ Power are clearly the top two wings that Indiana wants. Andrej Stojakovic is still someone that Mike Woodson is actively pursuing and trying to get to campus, but if we are talking truly realistic options, Stojakovic would probably be third out of those three.

Indiana is pushing shooting on the wing and that's why someone like Coen Carr has dropped on the board.

Carr has been out all spring with a finger injury and that really hurt him in terms of his recruitment with Indiana. He visited Indiana officially this spring but hasn't gone elsewhere since. Tennessee is a school to watch. He has visited Clemson and South Carolina is trying to push hard too.

The Nike EYBL is back in the midwest this weekend taking place in Louisville. TheHoosier.com will be on site providing updates, analysis and more.

Here is a list of some notable players who are expected to be there: Arrinten Page (TSF), TJ Power (BABC), Brady Dunlap (Vegas Elite), KJ Evans (Team Durant), Coen Carr (Georgia Stars), Liam McNeeley (Drive Nation), Jalen Haralson (Indy Heat), Trent Sisley (Indy Heat), Kanon Catchings (Indy Heat) and more.

The event begins on Saturday and runs through Monday.

Here is the link to the schedule:

Smal note...

Obviously the news came out this week that Indiana would be taking part in the 2023 Empire Classic in New York with UConn, Texas and Louisville. That is yet another high profile set of matchups that Indiana will be taking part in over the next two seasons.

Mike Woodson also spoke at Huber's Winery on Wednesday and made it known he wants Louisville and Kentucky on the future schedule for either a home-and-home or neutral site matchup.

Here is more:

How will poorly performing players take getting "pay cuts" under NIL??....

Under the NIL there are kids who are now, technically, professional athletes and I'm wondering how some of the power schools like Bama, OSU, A&M, etc will handle a failing former 5-star in their 2nd or 3rd year who is not turning out to be anywhere near as good as projected. Say they'd offered the kid a ton of money to come to BFU but now BFU's budget needs it for another recruit... "Son, were gonna need to restructure your commission program." Life can be a bitch if you don't produce.... Thoughts?

Maryland vs IU: MD 6 IU 5 in 11. IU loses a tough one...

RHP Ty Bothwell is on the mound for IU with an ERA of 4.03 and a WHIP of 1.34 in 44.2 IP with an OBA of .185.
RHP Jason Savacool is on the mound for the Terps with an ERA of 2.72 and a WHIP of 1.01 in 92.2 IP with an OBA of .207.

In IU's 1st, Glasser and Whalen ground out for two quick outs, and then Jessee singles to put a man on. Pyne Ks to end IU's 1st.

In MD's 1st, the leadoff hitter doubles off the wall. Bothwell gets the next batter on a K. A single scores the runner from 2nd. Bothwell gets another K for two outs and the runner still on 1st. Bothwell then gets another K to end the inning.

I guess I missed this stat, but they said that IU set a B1G record in strikeouts this season with 561, just one ahead of Iowa. I don't know, but we might have challenged the record in hit batters also.

Parents of children in TX shooting asked for DNA samples because the murdered kids are unrecognizable.

Think about that. Your 2nd grader mutilated so badly that they are unrecognizable.

Imagine the people first on the scene…what they had to witness. Imagine the children’s classmates having to live with this scene seared into their memory for the rest of their lives.

Parents can’t even recognize their own children because bubba needs to have an AR-15. They’re fun to shoot!

Dear God.

As George Patton said, “When you put your hand into a pile of goo that used to be your best friend’s face, you’ll know what to do.”

Well, we all know what we need to do, and what is right. It’s time to take action. There is no way anyone should be able to have these types of weapons. Period.

Good grief. When will enough be enough?

Let’s assume this is the way scheduling moves in coming years:

(Allen) also expects the B1G to keep a 9-game conference schedule. Allen is also favorable to two permanent opponents per team while rotating the rest so that every 4-year player visits every campus in the B1G at least once.

Let’s assume Purdue is one of our permanent opponents. Who should the other one be?

John Daly Briefly Leads the PGA Championship

I looked at the leaderboard and John Daly was in a 6 way tie for first at 2 under. He's since dropped to T8 at -1, but for a brief moment I was imagining him with a Marlboro Red dangling from his lips on the tee box and eating M&Ms while walking next to terrified co-leader Y.E. Yang who is is paired with him.
