RHP Ty Bothwell is on the mound for IU with an ERA of 4.03 and a WHIP of 1.34 in 44.2 IP with an OBA of .185.
RHP Jason Savacool is on the mound for the Terps with an ERA of 2.72 and a WHIP of 1.01 in 92.2 IP with an OBA of .207.

In IU's 1st, Glasser and Whalen ground out for two quick outs, and then Jessee singles to put a man on. Pyne Ks to end IU's 1st.

In MD's 1st, the leadoff hitter doubles off the wall. Bothwell gets the next batter on a K. A single scores the runner from 2nd. Bothwell gets another K for two outs and the runner still on 1st. Bothwell then gets another K to end the inning.

I guess I missed this stat, but they said that IU set a B1G record in strikeouts this season with 561, just one ahead of Iowa. I don't know, but we might have challenged the record in hit batters also.

IU goes down in order in the 2nd.

In MD's 2nd, the 6 thru 8 hitters are up and the leadoff man singles. Bothwell gets a K for the 1st out and the runner still at 1st. A walk on four pitches puts runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Bothwell gets the next hitter on a K for two outs and runners still on 1st and 2nd, and we are back at the top of the order for the Terps. A flyout ends the inning.

In the T3rd, IU has the 8, 9, and 1 hitters up and IU goes down in order again.

In MD's 3rd, Bothwell puts them down in order.

In the 4th, IU has their 2 thru 4 hitters up. Whalen grounds out for the 1st out and the Terp's ace has been getting mostly ground balls when we make contact. Jessee and Pyne strike out to end IU's 4th and they have gone down in order for three straight innings.

The 5 thru 7 hitters are up for MD in the 4th. A leadoff double to the base of the wall puts a runner in scoring position with no outs. Mathison fights off the sun to catch a line drive in LF for the 1st out with the runner still at 2nd. Another double scores a run to make it 2-0 with one out and another runner in scoring position. Another double scores another run with two outs and it's the bottom of the order that is hurting us right now and we are back at the top of the order. Bothwell then walks a man on a full count to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Another fly that dropped between three IU fielders drops for another double to score another run and of the 7 hits given up by Bothwell, five are doubles. Mercer goes to the bullpen to bring in RHP Reese Sharp with an ERA of 6.93 in 49.1, but he has pitched much better of late. Sharp gets a K to end the inning.

Note: To show the power in the Terps lineup, their hitters today have season HR totals in this order of the lineup: 10, 22, 14, 21, 8, 15, 14, 6, and 8

In the T5th, IU goes down in order for the fourth straight inning, but at least two of their outs were balls hit out of the infield, with everything else being grounders or Ks with the lone single being a ground through the infield. The Terps pitcher is at a PC of 65 through five innings.

In the B5th, Sharp gets the leadoff man on a ground out. A single puts a runner on with one out. A WP sends the runner to 2nd with one out. Sharp gets a K for the 2nd out with the runners still at 2nd. A K ends the inning.

In the T6th, with the 8, 9, and 1 hitters up, Doanes singles for just IU's 2nd hit of the game and first since the 1st inning. Serruto then singles to put runners on the corners with no outs and we are at the top of the order in Glasser. On a fly ball that was dropped in LF for an error, Doanes scores with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Whalen grounds out and after a review by the umps on a play at 2nd for a possible DP, the umps ruled that Glasser had reached safely. We have runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Jessee then strikes out for the 2nd out with runners still on 2nd and 3rd and Pyne up. Pyne flies out to end IU's 6th.

In the 6th, we couldn't have an IU game without a hit batter and Sharp hit the leadoff man. A pop out and a flyout resulted in two outs. A double through the right side of the infield put runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Sharp gets a K to end the inning.

In the 7th, IU has their 5 thru 7 hitters up. Mathison leads off with his 18th homer of the season to make it 4-2, MD. Ellis then reaches on a single. Tibbetts grounds out on a close play at 1st with Ellis moving to 2nd and one out. Doanes walks to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. A WP moves the runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out and it is the same situation last inning when we couldn't get a run across. Just like last inning, a K results in the 2nd out with runners on 2nd and 3rd. A balk brings in Ellis with Doanes taking 3rd and it is 4-3. Glasser singles to bring in Doanes to tie it on a ball that drops in RF and that chases Savacool. MD brings in RHP David Falco with an ERA of 3.04 in 23.2 IP and he inherits Glasser at 1st and two outs. Glasser steals 2nd to put a man in scoring position with two outs. A ground out ends IU's 7th.

In the B7th, Sharp is back on the mound and faces the 4 thru 6 hitters. Sharp gets the leadoff man on a line out to Mathison. Sharp gets a K for the 2nd out and no one on. A single puts a man on with two outs. Sharp then hits his 2nd batter of the game to put runners on 1st and 2nd after he got the first two batters on outs. Jessee hauls in a deep ball that was halfway on the warning track to end the threat and the inning.

In the T8th, IU has the 3 thru 5 hitters up. Jessee walks on four pitches to lead off. Pyne strikes out and Mathison hits into a DP to end IU's 8th.

In the B8th, Sharp faces the 9, 1, and 2 hitters. After getting behind the leadoff man 3-0, Sharp strikes him out to put the top of the order up. A double to the LF corner puts a man in scoring position with one out. The Terps have seven doubles on the game. Sharp gets a K on the Terps top player, Alleyne, for two outs with the runner still on 2nd. Sharp then gets a K to end the inning getting all three outs on Ks.

In the 9th, IU has their 6 thru 8 hitters up with Ellis leading off. Ellis goes down on a K. A lineout to the SS gets Tibbetts for the 2nd out. A ground out ends IU's 9th.

In MD's 9th, Sharp faces the 4 thru 6 hitters. Sharp gets the first batter on the flyout. A K and another flyout sends the game to extra innings.

In the T10th, Mercer pinch hits Goforth for Serruto in the No. 9 spot so Ellis will go behind the plate. Goforth draws a leadoff walk and we are at the top of the order in Glasser. Glasser singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. This brings up Whalen who has been in somewhat of a slump and is 0-4 so far. A SAC bunt by Whalen moves the runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out and Jessee up. A fielder's choice results in Goforth scoring from 3rd on a close play at the plate and Jessee reaches with runners on the corners with still one out and IU up 5-4. A Terps' challenge and review by the umps upholds the call at the plate. The Terps go to the bullpen to bring in RHP Nigel Belgrave with an ERA of 6.00 in 15 IP. Pyne hits into a DP to end their 10th.

In the B10th, IU sends Sharp back out there after he has pitched a career high 89 pitches to try and close it out. Surprisingly, Perkins is warming up in the bullpen. Sharp is facing the 7 thru 9 hitters who are not easy outs. The leadoff hitter hits a double off the wall, the Terps' 8th double of the game, and Mercer brings in RHP Jacks Perkins with an ERA of 5.17 in 76.2 IP. That DP in IU's T10th sure looks big right now. Another double ties the game with a runner on 2nd and still no outs. The bottom of the order is hurting IU but they all have high batting averages. Perkins gets a big K for the 1st out and the runner still at 2nd and we are at the top of the order. Perkins then gets another K for two outs and Alleyne, the B1G Player of the Year is up and IU gives him an intentional walk. Doanes catches a sharply hit ball at 2nd to end the 10th.

That was a great baseball play by Goforth. Excellent jump on contact and a perfect slide. Just wish it had been a game winner.

In the T11th, IU has their 5 thru 7 hitters up and Belgrave is still on the mound for the Terps. Mathison walks to lead off. Ellis singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. A Tibbetts grounder forces Mathison at 3rd for the 1st out and runners still on 1st and 2nd. Doanes singles and Ellis is sent home and is rather easily out at the plate and that was a bone head move to send him since he is no speed demon. With two outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, Mercer sends Perkins to the plate. Perkins in a little dribbler in front of the plate is thrown out by the catcher and IU blew a big chance to try to win the game with a blunder on sending Ellis to the plate.

In the Terps 11th, the Terps lead off with another double, and 9 of the Terps 14 hits have been doubles in this game, and the batter that got the double was 0-5 before that. In a mental error when two players thought the other was going to grab it, a bunt ended up being an infield hit to put runners on the corners with no outs. Perkins then hit a batter to load the bases with no outs. With Mercer bringing the outfielders in, Perkins got a K for the 1st out and the bases loaded. Perkins hit the next batter to end the game and that was his 2nd hit batter of the inning. Mercer challenged the call of the hit batter, and while the batter didn't try to get out of the way of the pitch, he didn't reach out over the plate.

What in the world is going on with our defensive alignments to allow 9 doubles??

You just have to question sending Perkins to the plate only to have him go back out to lose it. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Boy. Perfect way to blow it. It’s an idiotic approach to pitching. Either strike them out or hit them.

Their guy stands in and takes one in the elbow. Doanes spins out of there like the pitcher is throwing 105. Difference in a team guy and a me guy.

isn’t Perkins the king of hbp on our squad?
Yes, I couldn't remember what his number was although I knew he was in the lead for that and he had 19 hit batters going into this game after I looked it up, so that would give him 21 after tonight. Brehmer has stayed close with 16. I believe that IU moved into 2nd place in the NCAA on hit batters, but the team with the most, and I can't remember who it was, was well ahead of IU.

IU plays the loser of the Michigan/Illinois game that will finish well after midnight, and it is scheduled to be the third game of the day tomorrow. I assume Brehmer will start that game. IU was outhit tonight, 15 to 9, with 9 of the Terps hits being doubles and I wonder when was the last time that IU had given up that many doubles in a game. Glasser, Ellis and Doanes each had two hits with Mathison clubbing a homer. We had our opportunities to put up more runs but just couldn't get it done. Sending Ellis home on that Doanes single was a mistake to put it mildly, and who knows how things might have played out if Ellis was held at 3rd. The way things played out in the bottom of the 11th, it might not have mattered what we did in the the top of the inning, but we will never know.

Thanks for the inning-by-inning recap. Another frustrating loss in a season filled with them. Unfathomable that after 55 games, Mercer only has three pitchers he feels he can trust and one of them leads the world in HBP. Completely wasted an outstanding offensive season. Will be interesting to see if there are changes in the offseason.
