Zach Edey tonight

Edey committed 5 fouls in 18 minutes tonight. Equalling his career total at Purdue. Dude got away with murder
Smart guy, he'll adjust. Just as he would have if the B10 refs ever decided to start blowing the whistle on him.

And only 4 shot attempts as the Grizzlies starters struggled to beat the Mavs backups.
It is going to be interesting how he ends up playing "off the ball". They aren't likely going to run much of anything for him with guys like Ja Morant on their team. So coming from a situation where literally every single playwas designed to get him the ball on the block, to maybe getting a couple every game in certain situations...often none though... Well, lets just say it'll be interesting how he adapts to that.

I do see some potential for a decent amount of lobs from Ja though. That could become a staple for Edey.

He doesn't need to score much in the NBA to be valuable. Setting screens, protecting the paint, extending possessions and rebounding alone will make him valuable. I've said all along, I think he'll have a long NBA career, but doubt it will be as a primary scorer.

That's all fair and probably a likely scenario. No clue why you draft a guy like that 9th though.

Agreed...it'll just be interesting to see how he adapts to that role. Often times in the NBA, that role is filled by guys that have quite a lot better ball skills than Edey has so far. He can shoot free throws, and his improvements in college were pretty dramatic, so I'm sure he'll develop all this. But as of now, he can't handle the ball, and has actually been a pretty awful passer out of the post. Hard to think of someone on Ja Morant's team, that isn't a good passer, sticking... Hope he does though, honestly.

Yeah, I never thought he was a great passer, but many PU folks lauded him for it. My view was, with 3 guys collapsed on him, anyone he could hit would be open but I never thought he was crafty in finding the right guy. That was something TJD improved on amazingly. But when I think of guys like Ben Wallace, Rodman, Dale Davis, Buck Williams, or Mark Eaton there have always been guys who hung around and were valuable but not good ball handlers. I'd think if he can improve his passing that would be the biggest ROI and realistic. Not sure he'll ever be someone you want handling the ball.

Could be. Edey is unique. But just seems like the types of guys you mention are a dying breed in the NBA.

Maybe Edey is already better at the stuff away from the basket than I'm giving him credit for? But if not, I suspect his impact will end up being less and less.

There's a reason the guys you mentioned are a dying breed. Too many teams in the NBA have all 5 of their guys playing away from the basket any more. Not saying Ben Wallace, or Rodman couldn't guard away from the basket, they could. But it certainly wasn't a strength of theirs. And any sort of handling of the ball, or passing, basically none of the guys you mention could do it well.

Guys like TJD are becoming the modern day version of those guys you mentioned. With the big difference being the modern day guys can guard more effectively away from the basket, and handle the ball and pass better.

Again, it'll be interesting to see him evolve. And on his passing...he's an awful passer out of the post. He didn't really ever get much of a chance on the perimeter, other than handoffs on his illegal screen ball handoffs.

valid point..when the entire opposition is collapsing on you, you don't have to be Larry Bird to find an open man camped out on the 3 pt line. The guys you mentioned were all vacuum cleaners on the glass. There's always a place on a roster for a guy who can come in, clamp down on defense and own the boards. Even in a bench role. At any level.

So he will become more athletic and quicker?
No, I just think he'll learn not to play so physically and goon-like. I always said, if I was Painter, I'd have been telling him to be even more aggressive. I never felt like I was doing all I could if I only had 2 fouls to end a game!

Did not IU lead the country in Flagrant Fouls?
that's what you are going to hang your hat on? What would lead the country in flagrant fouls... 8? This is a discussion about the overall physicality of the game as it's called in the B10... ie: primarily physical play that ISN'T called. If you're going to be a troll, please be a better one.

BTW, can you post the link to your source showing IU led the country in flagrant fouls?

you mentioned 4 guys who haven't player in 20 years. name a comp to eddy in today's game. I don't see Eddy in the league for an extended time, Roy Hibbert went from all-star level to useless pretty quick in today's NBA

Yep, you're right, and I think that does show the game is changing, but Edey is also bigger than all those guys except Eaton. I may be wrong, but I think he'll work on his game and someone will find a spot for him. Heck, he's already being planned to start in Memphis. He'll carve out a niche, but I believe will have drawbacks on mobility and ball handling. I just find it funny that PU folks and his supporters all raved about his ability to "not draw fouls" while everyone else complained about how much he got away with. Suddenly he's picking up 5-6 fouls in 18 minutes with refs who (imo) aren't giving him breaks. Generally guys who foul, foul, regardless of refs. He's just playing the physical game he always has and suddenly his fouls are being called. And, I think he'll adjust there too, but it is funny nonetheless.

I think he will too. He played at Purdue, he dominated everyone, including IU, for too many years. So it isn't easy to root for him, or even say good things about him. But his improvement at Purdue was remarkable. For all we know, he'll become a pinch post like big that can effectively hit 18' jumpers, dive to the rim for lobs and offensive rebounding attempts, guard NBA level wings away from the basket, pass the ball around the perimeter, etc...

That's essentially what a modern NBA 5 man has become. Its just difficult to envision him doing those things, because he never did them at Purdue. Obviously he didn't need to though.

I think my main point has been, IF it ends up that he can't effectively guard away from the basket, and/or can't handle the ball more and become an effective passer...I don't see him being a long time main rotation or starter level player in the NBA.

There's no question though, at his size, and what he's already shown to be able to adapt and improve to, he very well could become a great NBA player. It just won't look like it did at Purdue.

Guys like Myles Turner will feast

That wasn't awful defense...to be fair.

Edey's problem won't be guarding people like Myles Turner...it'll be guarding faster players in high pick and rolls. And then passing and handling the ball away from the basket.

If he doesn't expand his game to being proficient in those areas, it will severely limit the scope of his career.

I personally wouldn't count him out...I think he'll likely figure those things out, and become a quality starter or main rotation level big in the NBA.

I'm just trolling. With the way their football season is going, they need something to hang their hats on. Edey's double double against the Pacers who were missing 4 key players seemed like the ticket.
