Woodson severely out-coached by Underwood

The Illini outscored IU by 19 in the 2nd half, after trailing at halftime. IU has the players, just not the coaching to make halftime adjustments like Underwood and the Illini did.
We don’t have the players, not even that close yet. Our talent deficit was on full display both today, and against Michigan. We have absolutely no guard or wing who can go and get a good shot on his own. We are also playing (and depending on) an undersized center who can’t shoot even mid-range jumpers. Yes, Woody could have made a couple of tweaks today, but it wouldn’t have mattered.

Games aren't played on paper, and IU was ahead at half time. I don't see any rules that say IU can only play well during the first half of games. I don't think it is a matter of being gassed. While I would agree IU doesn't have a consistent player that can go get their shot off the dribble, I think IU is good enough to be competitive and win games and not totally stink in the second half.

While ultimately it’s on the young man and his parents, whoever encouraged the “KL, you should skip your senior year and re-classify to the class of ‘20 to start college early” sure gave this kid some bad advice. Was this an AAU Coach, Archie or Family???

Illinois can play so many styles. Makes them hard to defend. They can run or slow it down to the classic Dick Bennett style. They are probably the best team in the B1G.

No issue with the Whiteboard. They earned it. It’s up to IU to do something about it.

This thread is so typical... The anti coach contingent jumps on and tries to push their narrative.... We played with them until we broke on the 16-3 run. We were back to hero ball.
I think that is a strawman about Woodson. There are legit criticisms: doesn't mean somebody is anti-Woodson. I'm sure he would be the first to say that he didn't get it done today.

My concern is the lack of sets IU runs on offense. It’s hard to consistently score when you have to create your own shot every time down.

Kentucky, Baylor to a lesser extent can do it with 2-3 NBA draft picks every year. Maybe that’s Woodson’s goal, but he’s going to have to be a massive recruiter.

Top to bottom, I feel that B1G basketball has the best coaching in the country. This is a league where Tim Miles gets fired and Fred Hoiberg can't hack it. It's a league with HOF coaches like Izzo and Painter (yes, I said it) and up-and-coming and/or solid coaches like Juwan Howard, McCaffrey, and Collins.

Indiana is now just a part of the coaching carousel of second-tier coaches in the B1G, and has been for more than a decade now. Unless IU finds a HOF-caliber coach, they simply cannot consistently succeed in the B1G. That's the reality.
McCaffrey?! Lol. Underwood and Woody are WAY better than him.

I don’t disagree that the team needs to be a lot more competitive during the second half. But the fact that they are so inconsistent game to game is partly a reflection of the so-so talent on the team, particularly as it relates to the ability to score the ball. How much better would this team be if it had a player like Davis or Ivey on it, who can go and get shots, especially if the offense is bogged down. We are basically one dimensional with Trayce, undersized against some of the talented guys he’s facing, and with a mediocre supporting cast.

This game is still on Archie and recruiting he has done in the past...Let Woody get his players and scheme in due time and different outcome...

Woody has really only gotten XJ, the one player who can make a difference. Essentially everyone else is what we had last year.

Wow, Underwood took Woodson to the woodshed at halftime today!!! Didn’t expect it. It helps when you have guys that can make the 3 … and guard the 3

Please site examples.

You talk about coaching and how Woodson was out coached AND then you, IMO, TOTALLY gut your own argument with " It helps when you have guys that can make the 3 … and guard the 3" which indicates that even you saw the talent disparity.

Which is it??

Big time talent difference today. Woody must get shooters and bigs.
Not just any. Court vision from them is key in finding the shooters. We have guys open. Just not very good at finding them. Hitting them…that’s a different story.

I’d say Durr has made a difference. And had he not gotten most of the team to come back, we would be in big trouble
I don’t know. Obviously we are not where we want to be yet. I personally believe that Race, Rob, Galloway and Geronimo have all mad pretty significant strides from last year. I think X looks twice as good now than he did at the beginning of the year.

It’s easy to get down after a loss but I really think we are growing.

I think we are close to our ceiling talent wise. Can things be better? Sure. We are pretty much where us realists thought there’d be. 5-7th in the B1G. Illinois, Purdue and Michigan st. Are the best. Wisconsin and Ohio state next. We can beat them just not constantly. We are still better than last year.

It has been two years, but the kid came to college at the age of 17. Further, he has had two coaches. As he gets more experience, I do believe he can be a playmaker. But agree he has struggled, but again, he is very young. A true freshman in age and a freshman from an eligibility standpoint. I would say that if he were to transfer, he's a player that we would likely regret 2 and 3 years from now.

I agree with you that it is too early to give up on Lander. He’s got three more years at IU after this one. He needs to add about 15 lbs of muscle though to have a chance to defend B1G guards. He’s currently physically overmatched.

Lander turned 19 on August 9th (he’ll be 19 years and 6 months in just a few days). He was 18 years old when he stepped foot on the floor for his first Hoosier Hysteria. The same age as most freshmen. He’s not all that young for his second year of college. He‘s struggling because he’s overmatched, not because of his age.

The only thing Lander hurt by coming out of high school a year early was possibly his ego. Due to the COVID exemption, he did not lose a year of eligibility. By coming out early he gets five years, instead of four. He was able to spend last year being advantaged by B1G coaching, a strength coach, a daily training table, care by a team Dr, 24/7 access to Cook Hall, student managers available 24/7, a full college season, including 21 B1G games, and daily practice during the season or daily pick up games in the off-season against players far better than what Reitz High School had to offer. He’s a much better player today than he would’ve been if he stayed another year in high school.

Now, was he overrated as a five star recruit? I‘m sorry to say that it sure looks like it.

We actually played our best ball with TJD on the bench. In the 2nd half we forced it into him on numerous consecutive possessions. TJD had the opportunity to play an inside out game but instead tried to score every time. Kopp & Stewart are very slow and really need to be open to hit their shots. The inside out game is the only way to get them open for a good chance at a 3, IMO. Illinois has the luxury of fast guards with good shooting capability. We just don't have that luxury.

Stewert has a very fast shot. Kopp a lot slower.

Failure to execute … is not proof that coaching must have been bad.

IU lost control of the game … and never came close to winning it back.

one of the worst EVAR! Thanks for the diary pages tho
He never attended IU so he has a limited sample base

Lander and Bates had a tremendous opportunity today. Lander just isnt B1G quality and I’m doubting Bates more and more every game
And these will be two of the main guys next year. Can either shoot the three i dont know of any three point shooters for next year. We are going to be incredibly easy to guard next year baring some grad transfer three point shooters.

What you know about next year would fit on a single square of toilet paper and be of less use.
