Woodson severely out-coached by Underwood

Wow, Underwood took Woodson to the woodshed at halftime today!!! Didn’t expect it. It helps when you have guys that can make the 3 … and guard the 3
Their guards and their center way outclass us. That is not coaching.

Hummel said it best. TJD struggles when he is not the bigger and better athlete. So offensively challenged. Offense grinds to a halt when we force feed him.

How is it adjusting? 1st half Durr was able to guard Kofi straight up for the most part. He got in foul trouble and in the second half Kofi made TJD look like a 5th grader guarding a senior in high school. We either give Kofi 40 in the second or double (and triple) and hope they miss some 3s. They didn’t and we lost big. Woodson tried to come back with Durr in the second and he pick up his 4th on the second trip down the court. Not Woodson’s fault that his AA can’t seem to play against true centers.

Top to bottom, I feel that B1G basketball has the best coaching in the country. This is a league where Tim Miles gets fired and Fred Hoiberg can't hack it. It's a league with HOF coaches like Izzo and Painter (yes, I said it) and up-and-coming and/or solid coaches like Juwan Howard, McCaffrey, and Collins.

Indiana is now just a part of the coaching carousel of second-tier coaches in the B1G, and has been for more than a decade now. Unless IU finds a HOF-caliber coach, they simply cannot consistently succeed in the B1G. That's the reality.

If the rosters were switched, which coach would have won? I don’t think we had the horses today.
The Illini outscored IU by 19 in the 2nd half, after trailing at halftime. IU has the players, just not the coaching to make halftime adjustments like Underwood and the Illini did.

Didn’t IU hire the best staff possible?
Yep and it's still not good enough in the B1G. This league is spread too thin coaching-wise and cannibalizes itself with brutal schedules and next-to-impossible road wins for non-top 5 teams. For ****'s sake, Tim Miles gets fired and Fred Hoiberg can't even hack it in the B1G.

I would settle for players that can shoot the ball

Seems to be a pattern for us in the 2nd half.

Schematically, what would you have done differently?
Nothing Woodson could do. Once Durr got in foul trouble he had to choose between playing Kofi straight up or doubling and giving open shots. He tried a bit of both and it didn’t work. Offensively he had to hope TJD offset some of the dominant play of Kofi on the other end, he didn’t. Add to that, Race didn’t play well and Illinois could stick to shooters like glue and it was a bad day for us. I don’t think Woodson could have done anything differently though to change the outcome of that game.

Recruit another Durr maybe.

IU scored 17 in the second half against Wisky and 21 in the second half today. There is a little bit of a trend of getting outplayed, outcoached, whatever you want to call it in the second half against teams worth a darn. 17 and 21 in the second half isn't going to beat a 6th grade girls team.

This was the first game I truly was disappointed in Woody’s coaching. Continuing to try to force the issue in the 2nd with TJD on the block when he was clearly outmatched was annoying at best. I don’t blame TJD as much as the play calling

He's a GD Wooden candidate. At least he was. Put up or shut up time. TJD was humbled.

This loss had nothing to do with coaching.
You're so right.

This team has no shooters. When our bigs get into foul trouble, we have no lock-down scorers to keep us in the game. X and Rob may have an occasional big game, but until we get a couple of Fraziers on the roster, we're going to get beat every time.

Lander, Geronimo, Bates and Galloway are never going to give us the scoring production we need. Leal has been a disappointment, and Kopp isn't producing like he did at NW.

Everyone, myself included, was hoping for a quick turnaround to our BB fortunes, but we're a work in progress. Still, I believe there are good things to come this year.

We just got beat by an excellent team while having a generally bad game. Our lack of size is a killer at times.
Our size wasn't the issue either. Give Cockburn credit. He's a beast. Our primary issue is the same it's always been. We need to upgrade our guards and shooters. Kopp was brought in as a guy who can shoot. He has not made more than 2 fg's in any B1G game all season. This is all fg's, not just threes. Defensively, he's too slow to play quicker and more athletic guards. The same is true for Stewart defensively, although, he has made strong contributions with the three ball. X has played much better in the past month. But the guards as a whole are just not there.

We need to see a big leap in production by Tamar in year 2 and Lander as well. Assuming he stays with us. But the entire team dropped a hot turd in the second half. Whatever we had good in 1H, was all bad in 2H. Tip hat to Illinois, the better team won and whipped our ass.

Lander and Bates had a tremendous opportunity today. Lander just isnt B1G quality and I’m doubting Bates more and more every game

If TJD gets in foul trouble there’s almost no inside out game. It’s hard to get your guards any shots with nothing inside. Race plays out of his mind sometimes but if we’re depending on him solely as a post presence we’re done.

Lander will never be a dependable guy for us. It’s been 2 years

Our strength all season has been inside. We can't just go away from that. It's just not going to take us very far. Hoping for more diversity next year.

It has been two years, but the kid came to college at the age of 17. Further, he has had two coaches. As he gets more experience, I do believe he can be a playmaker. But agree he has struggled, but again, he is very young. A true freshman in age and a freshman from an eligibility standpoint. I would say that if he were to transfer, he's a player that we would likely regret 2 and 3 years from now.

Lander should have been in high school last year. He may just be a not-ready-for-prime-time freshman at this point.
