We're a play in game? Really?
Iowa a 5-seed, but PU a 3?
Michigan?????

It clearly doesn't matter what just happened on the court this week.

What a freaking joke!!!!

Disagree entirely. We finished ninth in the conference in the regular season and 3/4 in the conference tourney. B1G got nine in. It would be very easy to argue the tourney didn't do jack crap for us.

Your opinion, but certainly not a fact.

It is certainly a fact that the committee viewed us as the number 9 Big Ten team, even though we finished 3/4 in the tourney.
You do realize that they evaluate the entire season, don't you? The B1G tourney is just a portion of it. Had IU not beaten Michigan & Illinois, they would probably be in the NIT.

Yes, but, again, the point of the post is that the tourney didn't make a difference AT ALL. The B1G tourney wasn't a portion of it AT ALL...so why bother playing it?

Nobody here thought we were going before the BTT. Same for the committee.

We had 2 quad 1 wins before the tourney (2-7 vs Q1), and 4 wins after the tourney (finishing 4-8 vs Q1) I'm pretty sure that made a difference in seeding.

I get it. I understand. And you are clearly correct that that's what the committee valued. My argument is they are valuing the wrong thing.

Less than three hours ago, Iowa beat Purdue. Head-to-head...on the court, and won a B1G championsip.

Yet, Iowa is a 5-seed and Purdue is a 3-seed. The tournament finish didn't do crap for Iowa. AND IT SHOULD HAVE. It just happened right there for the whole world to see.

So why bother playing the tournament?

You are right...IU belongs on the 8 or 9 nine line based solely on how they are playing right now, but that isn't how it works. Purdue belongs on the 8 or 9 as well based on how they are playing right now but their body of work puts them on the 3 line.

It is the process and I support it.

Let's go win some ****ing games.

You can create whatever argument you want, but that's not what I'm saying. "IU should be an 8 because of how they're playing now." is a ludicrous argument that I'm certainly not making.

I'm arguing that if the NCAA Tournament committee is going to use conference regular season finishes for seeding, WHICH THEY CLEARLY DID , why bother playing conference tourneys?

Tennessee just beat Kentucky head-to-head, on the court, but UK is a 2-seed and Tennessee is a 3. Again, why play the games if they don't matter?

I guess I can't help you.

Regular season does matter as well. I'm just glad we are playing.

You're all having trouble separating 1) Happiness that IU is in from 2) the fact that the conference tourney doesn't seem to mean much.

TWO...SEPARATE...CONVERSATIONS...

Iowa could have been a 4 seed, probably should have, but you have to remember you are bumping somebody down who has their own positive arguments. For Purdue vs Iowa they are 2-1 against them this season.

IU put themselves in this position with their weak ass non-conference schedule at the start of the season! If we’d have played 1-2 quad 1 or 2 teams instead of teams like appalachian tech state, we woulda had a better seed than atleast Michigan!

I understand what you are saying. I don't think the NCAA gives a damn whether conferences play end-of-season tourneys or not. That is strictly the choice of the conferences. That's how the selection committee views it and they don't give any win in a conference tourney more value than a regular season game

The P5 teams hold conference tourneys for $ and the hope of sneaking in an additional at-large ( like us). The G-5 -level conferences are hoping for an upset that gets them a second bid (Richmond). As for the one-bid leagues, it doesn't help them at all with the NCAAT, but it generates TV revenue and a national audience for their championship game.

The selection committee is largely indifferent to the conference tourneys.

Let's prove them all wrong, go out and win the dam game and then move on with some tournament experience.

I understand the disappointment of Dayton game, but it’s okay. We are finally back in the tourney. Let’s be happy about it; monkey is off our backs. After losing to Rutgers and Purdue to close out the conference two games under .500, we were totally NOT NCAA bound. Down 17 with just over 10 minutes to play against UM, it’s amazing how the light turned on, and then we beat Illinois the next day. We can’t really moan about an unfair seeding until AFTER (if) we beat Wyoming. I recall a certain team based in Lexington KY who whined something awful about the “disrespect” of their seeding a few years ago - they got run by a team based in Bloomington, IN. Let’s prove it on the court. It starts Tuesday.

Losing early didn’t seem to hurt Wisky RU or Mich and winning it didn’t help Iowa much.
That’s the one I cannot figure out: Iowa.

A 5th seed and Purdue a 3?
I can see a second place regular season finisher as a #3 but they finished behind Illinois and Wisconsin.

On the bright side for IU, if they were in that Michigan slot, it would mean a probable matchup against Tennessee and those guys are freakishly athletic. They always seem to flame out just about every year but I think they could make a real run this year.

It doesn't mean as much as the regular season and it never has. But for sure, those 2 wins got Indiana in.
