What would make a candidate a good fit?

First and foremost quality: His name would have to be spelled Brad Stevens.
Let's start with a normal human being and go from there.
See Chris Beard, obviously minus the events of that 1 night. Of course if that doesn't happen, he's likely not available to IU.
Outgoing personality, great tactician x's and o's guy, and experience with the NIL and portal.
Yes all of these. Thats the problem imo with a guy with only one year of D1 experience he lacks experience in the non coaching stuff
Whoever the next coach will be, they’ll have a complete staff. I’m sure Dolson is prepared for that.
Think I saw an article where he is planning on having/hiring a GM for the program.
If it's McCollum I sure hope they give him a little extra NIL $ his first 2 years. So important for a guy like that to get off to a good start. We may have to overpay a bit in the portal to get good guys that fit his style until he can get settled and get his feet wet a bit.
Absolutely cannot lose to an ISU or FW again year 1 or lose 12/13. Dolson has to know how important that is. Hopefully he's raised the funds.
Interesting. It will be curious to see what role the GM has in shaping and running the program.
It seems we have a likely chance of bringing in a coach that is used to having a very different type of program. It will be very interesting to see how they do in a program with a model like IU’s .
I hope the new coach brings his own model. IU can throw out the model they've been using for the past two decades.
Whoever the coach is, it should always be his call to the players he brings in. May or may not need more money.
I look at is as a positive, as on taking somethings off the plate of the coach and supporting the coach.
If you remove that one lucky run no one would know his name, except IU fans who believe him sniffing RMK farts made him a genius. Didn't work on Dakich, Davis or Woodson. Maybe they didn't inhale like Beard did ..
His offense sucks .. it's outdated... and it's boring AF. He's not a championship coach, championship coaches have the ability to teach and play elite offense. You can't bore and hack your way into a chip.
I get that his team is winning the MVC in his first year but his players are actually rally good compared to most of that conference. Stirtz is head and shoulders the best player in the league.
I see Archie comparisons too with what a big jump this would be for a guy like this. Doesn't make sense when you look deeper. How patient would IU be with a guy that also has no history in D1 besides this year.
It would be like a AA baseball players getting sent to the majors. It is possible to work out but 99% of those guys have to go back down for more seasoning before they are truly ready. Must my opinion...
I think this is a great start to the list!
1. Confidence without being conceited.
2. In game strategy and adjustments. That's why Knight was known as the general. Many games come down to one or two possessions so this is a must. This also means knowing exactly what each player can and can't do and adjusting immediately to maximize when and how much to play guys.
3. Instilling confidence in the players. Some coaches do this and some just leave it up to the players. In game strategy is also a part of this. Let guys do what they do best. The good teams have lots of bench players with confidence. IU's bench seems to drain confidence on recent teams. A coach has to keep them engaged and ready to play their best at all times.
4. Intensity. The best teams tend to have it and the other teams are just hoping to win.
5. Public Relations help. Cignetti is the best at this. Someone who can give confidence to the team and the fans...even after a tough loss or a few losses.
6. Preparation. Have a strategy for winning. This is hopefully different versus each opponent. Some of the past coaches just hope the team is "on" that day or "we are just going to play our game" and see if it works. That isn't a plan.
7. Make it fun to root for them. Growing up an IU fan meant something different when Knight was the coach. Not that he did everything on this list well but we knew they were going to play SMART. They used lots of screens, they took good shots, they found their best players for open shots, the role players knew exactly what they were to do, boxing out was mandatory, pump fakes were often used resulting in living on the foul line, limiting bad fouls, limiting dumb turnovers, and constant motion.
8. Recruiting. Finding the best Indiana kids. Also, finding the best older portal guys that can fit the culture. That will be very important in the new college landscape.
Chris Beard is the guy that hits on all of these the most.
Have to stop looking for the next RMK or wanting to run things like he did. At best you'll get a poor ass cover band version of him, like Beard.
The RMK connection is just a bonus. Chris Beard has accomplished his own success.
Normal human being with some personality and ability to own a room would be a great start

So you see it as a negative that Beard coached under and was influenced by one of the greatest coach's of all time? Sniffing RMK's farts seemed to work OK for Coach K. RMK said one of his mistakes was not continuing to learn and adjust as much. Beard's teams play hard and win and got him to an Elite 8 also and had a team that was F4 caliber until he derailed himself in Austin. He is a terrific coach and one of the best fits, even before it sounded like we were whiffing more than MJ swinging at curveballs. And, the OP asked who is the best fit. Beard fits IU to a T and wants to be here. I was just answering the question.

Really! Have you watched McCollum? His offensive tempo is so slow it puts fans to sleep. Your hate for a man is ridiculous. You don’t know shit. He had a very good team when he was terminated from the Texas job, so to say one good run when you don’t know what they would’ve done that year. The Texas job was his biggest job. Texas Tech is a football school and he did well there. If he was at Indiana with its resources he would do very well. Bullshit! A championship coach has the ability to make adjustments and Beard does that well. Your offense bullshit is dumb. His teams score 70+ points and he doesn’t have the players he could get at Indiana. The only thing outdated is your hate for the man. You might want to see a psychiatrist for your problem. I want Beard at Indiana even more just to piss you off.

I didn't know there WAS such a thing as a "normal" human being. We are all wired a little differently.

Not speaking for TMP...but Beard runs "Athlete ISO ball"... on offense. It isn't fun to watch, there's not really a ton of adjustments. Its find mismatches, bully way to basket, kick and get offensive rebounds.
He has an established resume at the P4 level. Some of that is really good. The two tournament runs for Texas Tech, namely. But a lot of the rest of the P4 resume is mediocre. Namely the 76-67 regular season conference record... (.531)... barely above 50%.
Those two tournament runs, and the successes he had at the smaller schools before those runs, and then his connection with RMK, are why he's an IU candidate. And I'll be excited if he's hired. But this notion that he's markedly better than a handful of the other regular names that have been mentioned... well its emotional, and isn't based on any reality.
I tend to think that the main reason he isn't coaching at Kentucky, or Louisville right now is because of that conference record. If IU ever seriously considered him, or is now, then those schools most certainly would have (with respect to his DV case). So why would he be such an obvious choice for IU...if he wasn't for those schools? RMK is the actual answer to that.
One thing I would add is knowing your weaknesses and hiring people Who do the things You don't do well. In other words a guy with leadership and organizational skills, Who understands that He doesn't always have to appear to be the sharpest tool in the shed. While You have to have an Ego to Coach, but I want a guy Who knows when to keep the Ego in check and not feel threatened or intimidated if He has to turn over a task or development of a game Plan to an Assistant or staff number Who knows more or has more experience in a given area of the game. IMO Woodson failed miserably on this. He didn't understand that the College Game is different than the Pro Game, and He didn't want people on staff Who understood this and could offset his weaknesses.
He's not markedly better than a bunch of guys, but if you're keeping score, many of them supposedly have eliminated themselves from consideration. He's got more proven experience at this level than May and McCollum, and something his detractors don't ever recognize: word is he wants the job badly, and his experience at this level makes him less of a gamble. It's not just his experience, although that does matter and is pertinent, it's a combination of other factors, of which a minor one are his ties to Bob Knight. Acting like he'd not even be mentioned if not for having coached under RMK is dumb.
It's not about my belief of the magic of RMK farts .. I'm not a rube, it's those who are now Beard fans, for no other reason other than he inhaled RMK farts..
You and others believe they're magical ... I don't. I think he's a habitual drunk and his offense is outdated and boring.
Never said anything like that. I said I think they should consider him, because he's got a proven track record at this level, has good experience, is a great fit and wants the job. Have always said vet him, and if you find anything concerning beyond that 1 night, then he's out, but it's stupid to rule out one of the best candidates because of what happened on a night when the DA decided not to prosecute and the "victim" said she'd not argue he was defending himself.
So, the proper thing is to answer the question, or say who you want to see hired, rather than perpetually crapping on Chris Beard. What to you makes a good candidate and who are the 1 or 2 you'd like to see considered?
Boring offense? Who the hell gives a rats butt? Does the man win or does he not?
