First and foremost quality: His name would have to be spelled Brad Stevens.
See Chris Beard, obviously minus the events of that 1 night. Of course if that doesn't happen, he's likely not available to IU.
Outgoing personality, great tactician x's and o's guy, and experience with the NIL and portal.
Yes all of these. Thats the problem imo with a guy with only one year of D1 experience he lacks experience in the non coaching stuff
Whoever the next coach will be, they’ll have a complete staff. I’m sure Dolson is prepared for that.
Think I saw an article where he is planning on having/hiring a GM for the program.
If it's McCollum I sure hope they give him a little extra NIL $ his first 2 years. So important for a guy like that to get off to a good start. We may have to overpay a bit in the portal to get good guys that fit his style until he can get settled and get his feet wet a bit.
Absolutely cannot lose to an ISU or FW again year 1 or lose 12/13. Dolson has to know how important that is. Hopefully he's raised the funds.
Interesting. It will be curious to see what role the GM has in shaping and running the program.
It seems we have a likely chance of bringing in a coach that is used to having a very different type of program. It will be very interesting to see how they do in a program with a model like IU’s .
I hope the new coach brings his own model. IU can throw out the model they've been using for the past two decades.
Whoever the coach is, it should always be his call to the players he brings in. May or may not need more money.
I look at is as a positive, as on taking somethings off the plate of the coach and supporting the coach.
If you remove that one lucky run no one would know his name, except IU fans who believe him sniffing RMK farts made him a genius. Didn't work on Dakich, Davis or Woodson. Maybe they didn't inhale like Beard did ..
His offense sucks .. it's outdated... and it's boring AF. He's not a championship coach, championship coaches have the ability to teach and play elite offense. You can't bore and hack your way into a chip.
I get that his team is winning the MVC in his first year but his players are actually rally good compared to most of that conference. Stirtz is head and shoulders the best player in the league.
I see Archie comparisons too with what a big jump this would be for a guy like this. Doesn't make sense when you look deeper. How patient would IU be with a guy that also has no history in D1 besides this year.
It would be like a AA baseball players getting sent to the majors. It is possible to work out but 99% of those guys have to go back down for more seasoning before they are truly ready. Must my opinion...
I think this is a great start to the list!
1. Confidence without being conceited.
2. In game strategy and adjustments. That's why Knight was known as the general. Many games come down to one or two possessions so this is a must. This also means knowing exactly what each player can and can't do and adjusting immediately to maximize when and how much to play guys.
3. Instilling confidence in the players. Some coaches do this and some just leave it up to the players. In game strategy is also a part of this. Let guys do what they do best. The good teams have lots of bench players with confidence. IU's bench seems to drain confidence on recent teams. A coach has to keep them engaged and ready to play their best at all times.
4. Intensity. The best teams tend to have it and the other teams are just hoping to win.
5. Public Relations help. Cignetti is the best at this. Someone who can give confidence to the team and the fans...even after a tough loss or a few losses.
6. Preparation. Have a strategy for winning. This is hopefully different versus each opponent. Some of the past coaches just hope the team is "on" that day or "we are just going to play our game" and see if it works. That isn't a plan.
7. Make it fun to root for them. Growing up an IU fan meant something different when Knight was the coach. Not that he did everything on this list well but we knew they were going to play SMART. They used lots of screens, they took good shots, they found their best players for open shots, the role players knew exactly what they were to do, boxing out was mandatory, pump fakes were often used resulting in living on the foul line, limiting bad fouls, limiting dumb turnovers, and constant motion.
8. Recruiting. Finding the best Indiana kids. Also, finding the best older portal guys that can fit the culture. That will be very important in the new college landscape.
Chris Beard is the guy that hits on all of these the most.
Have to stop looking for the next RMK or wanting to run things like he did. At best you'll get a poor ass cover band version of him, like Beard.
