What is Paul doing?

Other than being a crank?

The right thing...Why in the HELL should we send money to Ukraine? All they need is weapons. Give em some weapons. Why would you send any money at all to Ukraine (the most criminal money laundering country on the planet). Really?

Heres a better question why was half the democratic party there including Jill Biden and all the sudden we are sending them money??? We have the highest inflation in 40 plus years, can't even provide baby formula, and have spent a fortune between covid (which 100 billion was stolen) and the infrastructure bill and now we need to send one of the most corrupt places on the planet 40 billion?

No

This is one of your best posts! That money needs to go to our border. We have poor hungry people here in the States that could use that 40 billion dollars of someon's fair share tax money!

Other than being a crank?

Paul is as dedicated to his core belief as anyone, probably more. Paul will bear any burden and fight any fight to advance his core belief.

The fact his core belief is that Rand Paul's name should be page one above the fold once a month is a bit different.

They offered him a vote on his amendment, he turned it down. A simple vote would put his name on page 5, not good enough for the junior senator from Kentucky.

Seriously, 100 US senators, how many are page 1 more than Paul? Maybe McConnell, but then only when he is pre tempore.

Prolly your best post. If we had to give them something that would be it. Its all they have been asking for. Weapons! Money will not help, give them a fighting chance! When Sean Penn went on Hannity after meeting with Zalinsky, and doing his documentary, thats all he was pleading for weapons!

They need money, they have to pay troops, they need fuel, medicine, parts, They have to rebuild bridges, roads, and railroads. They have to repair damaged buildings including hospitals. They need food for civilians and soldiers.

Rand Paul’s first responsibility is to his constituency. He makes himself seem important to them. This serves their own need to feel important.

Being responsible? I am sorry for Ukraine troubles but we have plenty here . 40 billion tried to ram thru? Damn right it needs held up.
We are the world police, everybody hates us until they need us. Just ask our own citizens, we are the devil in disguise until help is wanted or needed then the hands go out. We should probably help the Ukraine because it is the right thing to do, it is just funny the crap the US takes nationally until help/aide/money is needed.

Rand is just carrying on his dad's proud tradition of working his gimmick. Like how Ron used to get things into bills through the committee process then vote "no" on the floor vote because he was so against government spending.

I'd be willing to wager that a higher percentage of Americans have a negative opinion of the USA than most other countries if they were asked their opinion of the USA.

Is he grandstanding? Yes. However, there is an underlying point here. Where is that $40 billion coming from? Just lying around? No, it is going to be "created" so that it can be paid out. You can go to Vox and see how creating more and more dollars to pump out into the world is impacting our inflation in comparison to most other countries that were similarly situated to ours before and during COVID. Continuing to spend money we don't really have is really becoming harmful to the U.S. public. This is particularly true when you have leadership that is doing everything they can to exacerbate the issue with stupid policies elsewhere (energy being a glaring example).

Rand Paul's first duty is to Rand Paul. He isn't the only Senator with that problem. But think of it this way, his constituency is the exact same as McConnell's. McConnell tried to get Paul to quit this. One of the two must be wrong. I will grant it might be McConnell as I have seen no Kentucky polling. But the national polls I have seen show a majority of Americans and a heavy majority of Republicans say the US has not done enough to help Ukraine.

So this has become our responsibility? Also, if you think that I trust Ukraine or our politicians to handle and do the right thing with 40 billion dollars I have some oceanfront in kansas. Supply them with arms, let them have a fighting chance and be done with it. We have enough problems here.

Sen. Paul is exercising his long-standing right as a United States Senator under the rules of the Senate - rules which require the Senate to be “the most deliberative legislative body” in our system, and rules which prevent quick, ill-considered actions, and actions by an abusive majority. It drives COMPROMISE. Political horse-trading.

The Senate is not for whiny, emotional, knee-jerk partisans who just want what they want. Those folks need to go
watch American Idol-type shows.

The power of one Senator is also why Manchin is the most powerful guy in the government right now. He can force compromise on almost anything.

So again we will see whiny, stupid, short-sighted, “I want what I want” douchebags like Senator Hiawatha Warren trying to destroy the Senate to “get what they want” WITHOUT compromise.

And their uneducable minions will hit the message boards - as if they slept through civics and history, but now think they are intellectuals because they call people racists and hillbillies and other terms which prevent them from revealing their stunning lack of understanding.

The system is working as designed and the enemies (intentional and otherwise) of representative democracy are revealing themselves.

Should we again ask ourselves why Martin Luther King and Ghandi so long and and so loudly proclaimed that they would not accept violence as any part of their efforts? And why the simmering threat of violence, and actual violence, is the desired and accepted message of todays “protester”?

I agree with you and let me point out that the intent of my post was a facetious insult to Kentuckians first and foremost.

As for McConnell and Rand Paul, I think there is a simple and clear way to see both being “right“ in their own eyes. As McConnell has made known, he doesn’t give a flying **** in a rolling donut about policy. His goal is to aggrandize Republican dominance politically. Rand Paul on the other hand, regardless of his ulterior motives, focuses on policy.

Maybe and if so it tells me how ignorant some American's have become. I would wager that none of those American's that have a negative opinion of the USA would relocate to another country. Complainers are going to complain and haters going to hate until they need something and then it is all hands out.

Your take on McConnell is weak.

The man has never lost an election, and his earliest wins were in a Democrat city in a Democrat state.

He was tasked with raising money nationally for GOP candidates. Knocked it out of the park.

He has been the most powerful Senate Republican for decades.

His political instincts have been 100% accurate.

He has defeated Democrat strategy time and again.

You don't have to like him, but to say he doesn’t care about policy is inaccurate. He has controlled GOP policy - at least as developed and moved forward in the Senate.

And he kept that partisan hack power-abusing Merrick Garland off of the SCOTUS. That alone is worth a statue.

The man is effective, accomplished, and wields his power openly for all to see. He tells you his position openly, and takes whatever heat comes. (Have you ever seen him deliver a screech whine? No. Calm, deliberate comments only.)

He's doing his job.

Why is no one asking why in the hell the Senate is passing a $40B bill when even demented old deep pockets joe only asked for $33B? Are there no limits to how much $ we can spend that we don't have?

Why is no one pointing out that total British aid to Ukraine is app. $3B, and the French & Germans are each at $2B, while the US is at $56 fricking billion when this passes?

The Inspector General not only should have some supervision over this, he should fing move to Ukraine to do so. The possibility for waste/graft here is immense.

European strategy here is to seek a settlement. American strategy is to bleed Russia dry, no matter how long and how much $ it takes. I wondered why our dumbass SofD would say such a thing until I saw the Democratic delegation to Ukraine.....all the usual suspects, and throw in Trudeau for good measure. That many aholes in one spot thousands of miles from home.....I knew right then we were f***ed. This is all about destroying Putin, not saving Ukraine.

Yeah, just look around here. According to most conservatives, this country is going to dumpster fire hell in a hand basket train wreck.

Conservative partisans in February of 2022:
"Only Trump has sent meaningful things like weapons and tactical equipment to the Ukraine! All Biden and Obama ever did was send towels!"

Conservative partisans in May of 2022:
"When will this rampant spending of the Biden administration of sending weapons and tactical equipment to the Ukraine going to end! We have bigger problems to deal with!"

The mental gymnastics that some people are capable of is truly awe inspiring.

Most conservatives would probably say we are still the strongest country in the world, just currently under poor management.

What hasn't really been discussed is the point that they offered Paul a vote on his amendment. Frankly, I suspect it is a good idea. But that said if he wants this amendment why didn't the offer to vote on it placate him?

For loving America so much they sure do hate a lot of Americans and the elected government (which IS the people in a representative system).

From the other perspective, I'd imagine right wingers would say that lefties hate America more conceptually for wanting to ever change it and/or for recognizing that it's never been perfect and actually done some pretty crappy stuff along the way.

I don't know any conservatives that say they "hate" anyone, disliking the way things are ran or who is running them is far from hate.

Your last paragraph reminds me of the hee haw skit, "woah is me". If you live dwelling in the past I have found the past will haunt you till you die. Oh well thanks for the response have a great weekend.

Other than being a crank?

The hasty and undisciplined disbursement of Covid relief led to the biggest government fraud in a generation. That happened right here in River City.

Paul wants some accountability for $40b to be sent to Ukraine. I don't see what the issue is. All should agree with Paul.

I want to see Ukraine kick some Russian ass as much as the next guy. But I also know Ukraine is very corrupt--which is why they will likely never be in NATO. We need to watch the money.

So corrupt that they are either being groomed by our very own "officials" in DC on how to perfect corruption, OR are at least a co-defendant in the future (future for us, present for them) purging of this corruption.

I think classes are being held in Mar a lago

Um...are you talking about Mitch McConnell like the person in the post you were responding to was?

Mitch is for the $40B bill. How is he doing his job if you think his job is asking why the Senate is passing this bill? He negotiated this bill.

Would Trump give $40b ? OR would he leverage all of the other nations who are stake holders, to pony up $4b each and we would match it?
Doing this type ($40b from us) negotiation would totally piss off Pelosi, Schummer, Mitch, Romney, Pencil Neck, Murkowski...... on and on and on.... WAY to much visibility and other players to control to keep their "dirty" little fingers off of their piles of cash that would fund their families for the next Coup.

Or would he offer them the money if Ukraine agreed to jail Americans Trump doesn't like?
